Be Perfect Leviticus 11:44 - For I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy, for I am holy... NKJV Leviticus 19:2 you shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. NKJV 1 Peter 1:15-16: but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, Be holy, for I am holy. NKJV To be Holy means to be separate or set apart. When used by God, it involves people and things being separated for God s use. We are to be separate from all that stains our world and dirties our lives free of all sinful thoughts, destructive emotions, unclean images, impure motives and questionable activities. The Bible makes it crystal clear that God expects every Christian to live a holy life! Whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, influential or totally unknown, there are no exceptions - preachers, elders, missionaries, Sunday school teachers, farmers, factory workers, bankers, homemakers, etc., all must be holy. I. The pursuit of holiness Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. NKJV A farmer plows his field, sows the seed, and fertilizes and cultivates all the while knowing that in the end, he is utterly dependent on forces outside of himself. He knows he cannot cause the seed to germinate and grow, nor can he produce the rain and sunshine for growing and harvesting the crop. For a successful harvest, he is utterly dependent on God. Yet the farmer knows that unless he plows, plants, fertilizes, and cultivates, he cannot expect a harvest at the end of the season. In a sense he is in a partnership with God, and he will reap its benefits only when he has fulfilled his own responsibilities. Farming is a joint venture between God and the farmer. The farmer cannot do what God must do and God will not do what the farmer should do. In the same way, our pursuit of holiness is a joint venture between God and the Christian. No one will ever be holy without God working in his life, but neither will anyone ever be holy without effort on his own part. God has made it possible for us to walk in holiness/light. But He has given us the responsibility of doing the walking. He does not do that for us. I. Cultural holiness Ghandhi I could almost be a Christian if it weren t for the Christians! The greatest need in our lives and in our churches today is for Christians to live holy lives for all to see! The problem is, many Christians have what could be called a cultural holiness, where they adapt to the character and behavior pattern of Christians around them. As the Christian culture around them is more or less holy, so these Christians are more or less holy (one arm s length). But God has not called us to be like those around us. He has called us to be like Him: Ephesians 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. NKJV 1

Holiness is nothing less than conformity to the character of God - perfectly freed from all evil (1 John 1:5 God is light and in Him is no darkness at all ). NKJV Because God is holy, He can never excuse or overlook any sin we commit, however small it may be. The holiness of God is an exceedingly high standard, a perfect standard. But it is one that He holds us to. He cannot do more, He will not do less! Habakkuk 1:13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and cannot look on wickedness NKJV Though at times we try, we can never justify to God even the slightest deviation from His perfect will. God does not accept the excuse Well, that s just the way I am, or I m still struggling to grow in that area of my life, and He will not accept any excuses for why we sin. The devil made me do it statements are not going to cut it. God s holiness does not make allowances for minor flaws or shortcomings in our personal character. In the deceitfulness of our hearts, we sometimes play with temptation by entertaining the thought that we can always confess and ask for forgiveness at a later time. This is extremely dangerous. God never overlooks our sin. He never decides not to bother with it because we may think the sin is just a little one. God hates sin intensely whenever and wherever He finds it, because sin causes death. Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear. NKJV Ezekiel 18:20 - The soul that sins shall die! NKJV Nahum 1:3 The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. NKJV James 1:15 when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death. NKJV NKJV God wants His children to hate sin as much as He does - He wants us to say no to sin - He wants Christians to quit playing around with the sin that s in the world. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18: Don t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? And what union can there be between God s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. NLT Coming out means standing up and saying No! God wants us to say no to drugs, alcohol, sexual immorality, gambling, greed, pride, etc. God warns us to not enter any type of relationship (to include marriage) where we will be influenced to sin or fall away from Him. 2 Timothy 2:22 - Flee also youthful lusts, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. NKJV 1 Corinthians 15:33 - Be not deceived: Evil companionships corrupt good morals. ASV 2

It is not o.k. to sin just because everyone else is doing it - it is not o.k. to sin just because other members of your own family may be doing it. Old Cherokee saying - People who follow the crowd are soon lost in it. The crowd is going in the wrong direction: Matthew 7:13-14: You can enter God s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it. NLT Galatians 5:19-21: Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like, of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. NKJV Job 1:1 There once was a man named Job who lived in the land of Uz. He was blameless a man of complete integrity. He feared God and stayed away from evil. Job said no to evil in every form! He turned away from it, and we need to do the same. II. Hatred of sin Because God is holy, He hates sin. The word hate is a strong word, and we dislike using it. We get on to our kids for saying it to people (especially each other). Yet when it comes to God s attitude towards sin, no other word can give us the full meaning of how He feels. Zechariah 8:17 - for all these things are things that I hate. NKJV Psalm 5:4 For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You. NKJV Proverbs 6:16-19: These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him; a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren. NKJV Jeremiah 44:4 Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate! NKJV Revelation 2:15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. NKJV Hatred is a legitimate emotion when it comes to sin. As we grow in holiness, we should grow in hatred of sin: Psalm 119:104 - Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. NKJV God, being infinitely holy, has an infinite hatred of sin. We like to say, God hates the sin but loves the sinner. This is true, but we are quick to overlook the first part of that statement and emphasize the second. We may not take them very seriously and we may even make excuses for why we sin, but we cannot escape the fact that God hates our sins (every sin requires a death to pay for it). Every time we sin, we are doing something God hates. He hates our lustful thoughts, our works of the flesh, our pride and jealously; our outbursts of temper; our unfaithfulness. 3

He hates it when we ignore Him except for one or two Sundays a year (Easter; Christmas). Sometimes we get so used to our sins we sort of co-exist with them, but God never stops hating them. We need to develop in our hearts the same hatred of sin that God has. Psalm 97:10 You who love the Lord, hate evil! NLT Proverbs 8:13 All who fear the Lord will hate evil NLT Ecclesiastes 3:8 A time to love and a time to hate NLT Romans 7:15 what I hate, that I do. NKJV Hatred of sin as sin is the root of all true holiness. Realizing the awfulness of sin is the first step in our pursuit of holiness. We must develop the same attitude of Joseph, who said when he was tempted How then could I do this great evil and sin against God? (Genesis 39:9). III. Be perfect Matthew 5:48 - Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. NKJV How can we possibly be perfect as God is perfect? What do these words mean? What does it mean to be holy? To be holy is to be morally blameless, separated from sin by the blood of the Lamb and consecrated to God with all of our hearts, to be Christ-like, living lives that reflect the glory of God. To be holy means we are faithful children of God to be holy is to be in Jesus! Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. NKJV To be holy means our sins are forgiven and washed away in the blood of the Lamb: 1 Peter 1:18-19: For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. NLT Revelation 1:5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood NKJV The key to God s continued forgiveness in our pursuit of holiness is our own attitude toward sin. We can t just go out and do whatever we want we must repent of the willful, deliberate sinning, and as we live our lives we have to do our best to not sin, and stay humble and faithful to God and trust in Him to forgive us when we do fall. 1 John 1:7-10: But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. NKJV 4

IV. Conclusion Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. NKJV Holiness is a prerequisite to heaven. Perfection is a requirement for eternity - only the holy will see God. We wish it wasn t so; we even act like it isn t so. We act like those who are decent will see God. We say that those who try hard will see God. We act like being good is enough to qualify us for heaven. Sounds right to us, but not to God! You see, in God s plan, God is the standard for perfection - and we can t meet this standard. And God has never lowered His moral standard so we can meet it - that s why Jesus died on the cross! We don t compare ourselves to others; they are just as fouled up as we are. The goal is to be like Him; anything less is inadequate. Will you settle this in your heart right now? Will you call sin sin not because it is big or little, but because God s law forbids it? Will you begin to look at sin as an offense against a holy God, instead of as a personal defeat only? Will you begin to take personal responsibility for your sin, confess it and forsake it; realizing that as you do, you must depend on the grace of God? And will you decide to obey God in all areas of your life, however insignificant the issue may be? If not, then heaven will never be your home! 5
