THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS NOW THAT I AM SAVED By Pastor Mike Hayes CONGRATULATIONS! I am so happy for you. You just made the greatest choice you could ever make. You chose Jesus as your Savior and Lord. I have written this book to help you in your new walk with Him. I named it The Next Seven Days because this next week is a time of critical importance for you. The choices you make in the next seven days could determine your success or failure in your new life. No one is exempt. We are all weak and need special strength to be successful Christians. Relax! Rest in the knowledge that you are loved just like you are. You are going to make it. All of us and all of heaven stand with you in your decision to live your life for Jesus. I hope you enjoy reading this little book over and over. God loves you and so do I. Pastor Mike Hayes 1

DAY WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO ME? An Explanation of Salvation Getting Saved Staying Saved What s Next? You just got saved! You are born again. These are statements you hear a lot around the church, but what do they mean? Simply stated, because man fell into sin he needed a savior. None of us has ever lived a good enough life to deserve a place in heaven. Because God loved us He sent Jesus, His only Son, as a sacrifice to save us from our sin. Jesus literally died in our place. When we accept the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ as the truth and confess that with our mouth, God forgives our sins and we become a child of God. Instantly we are changed and our past is erased. So, if you died now you would go to Heaven, but if you don t die right now (and you probably won t) then what about living a successful life now? Someone once said, Getting saved is easy. It s staying saved that is challenging. There may be some truth to that statement. It is true that some people start out to serve the Lord but don t continue. Why not? It is usually because they think getting saved is an accomplishment instead of a whole new lifestyle. That would be like getting married mean 2

3 you will be assured of a long, happy life together. It doesn t just happen. The secret is to keep going. Remember, God will always do His part. He will never unsave you. You are His child. There are many exciting things ahead for you to look forward to in your walk with the Lord. You will learn about the cleansing of water baptism and the power of the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life. One of the biggest concerns new converts experience is believing that they are not good enough to deserve all of these wonderful gifts. Guess what, you are right! None of us are good enough, but God loves us enough to pour out His best to make us the success we were designed to be.

DAY BEING A CHRISTIAN ISN T MAGIC Becoming a New Creation It Takes Time to Produce Fruit One of the biggest misconceptions have when they first get saved is the belief that they will be perfect like magic! You will not be perfect instantly, nor will you become unsaved if you make a mistake. The Bible actually teaches that we become new not instantly, but gradually. Upon getting saved, some people experience instant deliverance from negative habits. For others, it seems to take forever. The important thing to remember is to keep a positive attitude about what just happened to you. You didn t get saved because you quit all the bad things you were doing. You were saved because you received by faith the finished work of Jesus who died on the cross for you. Never think your performance of good works is the reason you are saved. You path to total victory over negative habits will happen when you understand that Jesus is your partner and will work with you to overcome all obstacles in your path to total victory. Feelings of guilt and condemnation never come from God. He loves you and is committed to your success! Just remember, it takes time to grow what the Bible calls the fruit of the Spirit. 4

5 The fruit (or results) of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (These are listed in the Bible in the book of Galatians, chapter five, verses 22 and 23.) All of the wonderful attributes will become part of your life as you live your life for the Lord.

DAY WHO IS THIS TALKING TO ME? Learning to Identify the Voices We Hear We all have heard that people who hear voices get taken away by men in white coats, but the truth is, all of us hear voices. There are four major voices that speak to us continually through our thoughts. The are the voices of: O One of the most important things for you to learn is to identify the voice you hear. Then you will know what to do with the message you are receiving. How do we learn to identify the voices we hear? First, ask yourself, Does the message I am hearing agree with what the Bible says? For instance, one of the first things every new Christian hears in their mind is You are not really saved. But that is not what the Bible says. It says that because you called upon the Lord, you were saved. So dismiss the voice that says you are not really saved. Do the same thing with any message you hear, 6

7 even if it is actually spoken by someone who doesn t understand. Learn to listen to the voice of the Lord. As you read the Bible and build relationship with God, you will learn the language that God speaks. Jesus said, My sheep know my voice and another they will not follow.

DAY READ THE DIRECTIONS The Bible is the True Word of God Choosing the Right Bible How to Study the Bible How many times have we gone through unnecessary difficulties in our lives because we try everything first and then we read the directions? Whether it is trying to find the nearest mall in a strange city or putting together a toy at Christmas, life is easier when we read the instructions. In your new life with Jesus, the Bible is the instruction book. Sadly, many people have had the Bible lying around for years as a religious book but never used it to empower their lives. One reason is because many do not know how to use the Bible. Let me share some basics with you. The Bible is a book written to cover the story of God s dealings with man. God existed before there was a Bible. The Bible begins when God created the first man, Adam. Soon after the creation, Adam and his wife, Eve, fell into sin because of disobedience. This story is told in Genesis, the first book of the Bible. The entire rest of the Bible is the story of God s plans and dealings with man. You will learn to love the Bible. It is our love letter from God. I encourage you to wait until later to study the Old Testament. Though it is full of wonderful stories, it can 8

9 be complicated and hard to understand. I recommend that you begin reading in the New Testament. The first four books of the New Testament, the Gospels, are the story of the life of Jesus told by four different men. Read about Jesus. The more you read about Him, the more you will love Him. There are many different translations of the Bible. Since the original Bible was written in Hebrew and Greek, it had to be translated into English. The King James Version is the most common English translation, but I recommend reading the New King James Version. Also, you may enjoy one of the easy to read versions. There are many, such as The Message, New International Version, Amplified Bible and the Living Bible. Whichever you choose, understand that it takes the Holy Spirit to illuminate the Word of God in your heart. Ask God to help you understand the Bible. It is so powerful that one verse can change your life forever.

DAY PRAYER JUST TALKING TO GOD How, When, & Where to Pray Different Needs Different Prayers Prayer is one of the most misunderstood areas of man s relationship with God. Because of their religious upbringing, many people have the idea that your prayer must be formal, quiet, boring, and only done on your knees or in a church. All of these ideas are wrong. Prayer is the communication that exists between you and God. It is just talking to God and God talking to you. It is no different than talking to anyone else except that it is not another person (who probably cannot help you with your problem anyway). It is God! Think of this. If you had a chance to talk to someone who had every answer to every problem in the world, owned all of the resources in the world, had lived longer than anyone else in the world, and loved you more than anyone else in the world, would you? Of course you would! But it gets even better. When you talk to Him, He will never tell anyone your secrets. He always has an answer. Best of all, when an answer is not enough, He will hold you. When you are hurting, He will never leave you. He is always there. Day or night you can talk to God and He will hear you. 10

11 Don t ever make prayer a religious exercise. It is precious communication between you and the God who loves you. Enjoy knowing that Jesus is waiting to hear from you anytime. I hope you sense His presence there with you at this moment. Just take a moment to talk to God right now. Below is a prayer guide that I have used for many years, and it has been a real help to many people in their prayer life. It is designed to walk you through the various steps of prayer. Since there are twelve steps, if you pray each one of them for five minutes you will have prayed for one hour. You don t have to stay on any one area exactly five minutes. Be free to go with the flow of whatever you wish.

I think you will enjoy using it as a guide to encourage you as you learn to pray effectively. 12

DAY OLD FRIENDS NEW FRIENDS What About the Old Crowd? New Friends How to Make Them This is one of the most important chapters in the book. The strength of your relationship with God is going to be determined largely by the relationship you have with other people. People influence us. We can t help it. As human beings we are social creatures. The people we allow into our circle of influence determine the decisions we make. For instance, no one ever married someone they had never met. The people we hang around with are the ones who influence us the most, even if it is by television. Notice how a style of clothing can sweep the nation in a short time? We are influenced by what we see and hear. As a new Christian, you are facing the challenge of dealing with the relationships you have. You are probably already thinking about this: How do I tell my friends, family or spouse who are not saved what just happened to me? I think you should tell them. Did you know that most of the people who get saved are the result of someone telling them about their experience with Jesus? The important thing to remember, though, is that everyone may not celebrate your new life with you at first. Don t be discouraged. 13

Some of the old friends will go away. Make new friends who are Christians. The Church is full of people just like you who can strengthen and encourage you. Reach out to them. Don t isolate yourself and be discouraged by the devil. He will tell you that no one cares about you anyway. If your friends or family members hear about you getting saved and you are able to lead them to the Lord, that s great But don t be discouraged if they do not come to the Lord right away, just put them on your prayer list. They will come into the Kingdom of God later. Do not let them influence you. You are a disciple of Jesus Christ now, not someone without a purpose just being blown around by anyone with an opinion. I can t encourage you enough to build a support network of new Christian relationships to lean on. One of the best ways to do this is to get involved in an area of ministry. God has a special calling on your life. The best way to find that calling is to begin to serve in some area of volunteer ministry in the church. What do you enjoy? Singing? Join the choir. Children? Serve in the children s ministry. Helping people who are down? There is a prison ministry, food programs and street ministry. Remember this. No one was saved to sit down! Everyone is saved to serve. Your greatest fulfillment will be to find your place and get involved. 14

DAY WHY DO I NEED TO GO TO CHURCH? What is a Good Church Like? Churches Aren t Perfect Don t be Surprised Training for Reigning It is true that you do not need to go to church to be saved. But when you are saved, you are in the church. The church is not the building on the corner with a steeple. The church is the body of Christ. You don t join a church, you are born into it. However, you can join the local representation of the church or what we call the local church. There are many negative things said about churches, including They are full of hypocrites, and All they want is your money. How do you know a good church? Find a church where Jesus is exalted, where people work and worship together with the common goal of helping their fellow man and worshiping the Lord Jesus Christ. A good church is also multi-cultural and includes people of all races, colors and creeds. There is no such thing as a white church, a black church, a rich church or a poor church. We are all one in Jesus Christ. Don t be surprised. Churches are not perfect. They are made out of people. Don t let the imperfection of people cause you to get your eyes off 15

of Jesus. He is the focus of our lives. As long as we keep our eyes on Him, all is well! THIS WEEK IS OVER & I M HERE TO STAY How to Ensure Long-Term Success Now that you have made a commitment to serve the Lord Jesus, you want to know that you are doing the things that will ensure that you are successful. The most important thing I can tell you is to live a life of repentance. Repentance in the Bible means to be remorseful for doing wrong and to change your mind. When you do, you never have to fall into that trap again. The next most important thing is to walk in forgiveness. You see, Jesus forgave you of everything you have ever done wrong. He becomes your example of what to do when someone does you wrong. Forgive them! That is not always easy. I know that sometimes there are events in our lives that are so painful we think we can never forgive the one who hurt us. But you can with God s help! Let me introduce you to the Holy Spirit. He is the current active representative of the Godhead that is at work in the earth, working on behalf of and through every believer. 16

There is a personal baptism of the Holy Spirit available to you! Why don t you just stop right now and ask Him to come into your life and fill you with power? He will! Feel free to talk to any mature Christian about a relationship with the Holy Spirit. He will be your greatest friend. He is the same Spirit by which Jesus operated, and He is available to you. That is exciting! Finally, I want to encourage you to get involved in the life of the church. You have unique talents and gifts that need to be developed and used to further the cause of the Kingdom of God. We need you! And the greatest secret to success I can give you is to find a place to be involved. Be like the Nike commercial Just Do It! SOMEONE TO CALL You are going to be a great success. If you ever need to talk to someone, the person who presented you with this book cares about you and is ready and able to listen, pray and encourage. Do not hesitate to call or email us. WE LOVE YOU! WE BELIEVE IN YOU! GO FOR IT! 17

You just got saved. You re born again. So what does it all mean? In this little book, Pastor Mike Hayes uses simple terms and plain English to help you navigate your first week as a new believer. There are many exciting things in store for you to experience and learn. There will also be many questions. How do I pray? Which Bible should I read? Should I get baptized? This book will help you sort things out. As you begin to trust in Jesus, just remember that your new church family and all of Heaven stand with you.
