From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers As we celebrate the Solemnity of Epiphany, a word which means manifestation, we recall that the Christ child came, not only to his own people, but to the whole world. In the adoration given by the three Magi from the East, the Christ child, and His saving mission, was made manifest to all the ends of the earth. The Church, which is the Body of Christ, continues to maintain, as its essential mission, bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to all the ends of the earth. Our essential mission is Evangelization. As we read in our own vision document, Duc in Altum, The call of Christ that leads to an ongoing intimate encounter with Him gives life meaning, purpose and direction. He is the answer to life s deepest questions. In Christ is to be found a new way of living a way of true joy. Christ proclaims the kingdom of God and salvation. He offers to humanity a great gift: liberation from all that oppresses and a joyful awareness of knowing God and being known by Him. Encountering this truth in Christ inspires in people a desire to share that love, that light, with others for it becomes obvious that the more human hearts are awakened to this truth, already written there by their creator, the more the kingdom of God is built up. To evangelize means this: to show this path to teach the art of living. At the beginning of his public ministry Jesus says: I have come to evangelize the poor (Luke 4:18); this means I have a response to your fundamental question; I will show you the path of life, the path toward happiness rather: I am that path. (Benedict XVI, 2000). Pope Francis often reminds us that we cannot be sacristy Catholics, closed in on ourselves. As a Church we must go out of ourselves, even to the peripheries. In this view, His Holiness reiterates the call of the Second Vatican Council which said that Church is not closed in on herself, rather, the pilgrim Church is missionary by her very nature, since it is from the mission of the Son and the mission of the Holy Spirit that she draws her origin, in accordance with the decree of God the Father. While the work of the First Evangelization, bringing Christ to those who have not heard of Him, continues, the Church today is calling for a New Evangelization. Again, we read in Duc in Altum, in contemporary society there are many places and cultures rich in Christian tradition that have seen the fire of faith wane under the strain of secularism, which relegates religious experience to the fringe. Therefore, many who know of Christ have not had an intimate encounter with him; he has not become the new horizon and decisive direction of their lives. This has led to the Church s call for a new evangelization. In his address on the occasion of the creation of the Council for the New Evangelization, Benedict XVI (2010) said that there is a need to reach out to countries where the first proclamation of the faith already resounded... but which are going through a progressive secularization of society and a sort of 'eclipse of the sense of God, which constitutes a challenge to find the appropriate means to propose again the perennial truth of the Gospel of Christ. The Solemnity of the Epiphany reminds us that we are all called to participate in the mission of evangelization to be missionaries, witnesses who propose the perennial truth of the Gospel of Christ in the midst of the world. We are called to be a people of joy who build up God s kingdom of Justice, Peace, and Truth. The Magi returned to the homelands to share the joy they had encountered in Christ. We are called to do the same. St Peter exhorts the follower of Jesus, saying, have the answer ready for people who ask you the reason for the hope that you all have" (1 Peter 3:15). Do you have your answer ready? A blessed Epiphany to all. 3 A University Parish: School of Prayer and Center for the New Evangelization
