A Farewell and a Welcome Dear Friends in Christ, As I explained in my column a couple of weeks ago, back in mid-december Deacon Tim was asked by Archbishop Lori to become the Pastoral Administrator of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Hamden. After prayer and discernment with his wife Meghan, Deacon Tim accepted this offer, and will begin on January 15th, 2018. While we are happy for Deacon Tim, and I am confident that he will do an exceptional job in this new position, he will be greatly missed. I am grateful for the many ways in which Deacon Tim poured his heart and soul into both his professional position on staff as Pastoral Associate for Faith Formation, as well as his weekend service as a Permanent Deacon assigned to this parish. May the reception that was offered in thanksgiving for Deacon Tim s years of service here at St. Joseph, serve as a lasting memory of our love and gratitude for all he has done for us in strengthening the family, through our Catholic faith. While we are happy for Deacon Tim, his departure leaves an immediate need that must be filled, and filled quickly at that. We still have four months of religious education to go, as well as first sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. In addition, we have a large RCIA class that is preparing to be received into the Church at the Easter Vigil, as well as our baptismal classes that must be coordinated and overseen. As I prayed to the Lord for someone to come forward to fill this void and continue the great leadership of these programs where Deacon Tim left off, a parishioner emerged who fit the bill! I am happy to announce that Mrs. Teresa Stitz has been hired as our Interim Director of Faith Formation. Teresa and Barry Stitz, along with their three sons, are well known to our community and are active parishioners. Their son Ben even made the front cover of the Baltimore Sun s sports page this fall for his outstanding soccer play. While the Stitzs are a family of athletes, what impresses me most is their faith and family unity. Teresa brings with her a background in education, including as a religion teacher at St. Clare School in Essex. I am confident that Teresa s leadership skills and experience as a teacher will enable her to transition into this position with grace and efficiency. So, as we say farewell to Deacon Tim, let us welcome Mrs. Teresa Stitz. In Christ,

My Dear Friends Life Line Screening January 24, 2018 8 a.m. 4 p.m. Do you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure or a poor diet, please consider registering for the wellness package. Appointment is necessary. Please call 1-888-653-6441 THIS weekend, January 13th & 14th, will be our Loaves & Fishes collection. We appreciate the variety of items that you provide for our pantry. Thank you for your generosity. It is always appreciated! It is with a heavy heart I write this note. I am very thankful to all of you for allowing me to be a part of your lives for the past six and a half years. When Fr. Kevin and Dcn. Mr. Bill hired me back in 2011, I honestly thought I would be here forever. I was quite surprised when I was asked to become the Pastoral Leader at St. Thomas Aquinas. I am certain the reason I was asked to take on this new assignment by the Archbishop is because of all of the good things we have done here together at St. Joseph. It truly has been a pleasure serving this great parish. Many of my favorite memories have come from my interactions with all of you at Religious Education, St. Joseph School, Summer Bible School, RCIA, SJAA, 600 Club, the Chicken Dinner and being your Deacon. Just because I will no longer be a Deacon at St. Joseph, I will still be around. My family will continue to be parishioners of St. Joseph Church so don t be surprised to see me around campus or in the pews. I will certainly miss all of you and will keep all of you in my prayers. I hope that you will keep me in yours. Peace! Dcn. Tim Attention Liturgical Ministers Without internet access: Father Langan is preparing to create the liturgy schedule for Feb. 1 April 30th. Please join us at our next monthly Respect Life Mass on Saturday, January 20th, at 8:15 A.M. After Mass, we will pray the Rosary for Life in the chapel. As St. Mother Teresa said, The greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion. We can only continue this vital ministry if we have the supplies. If you would like to support the Rosary Guild, we will gratefully accept donations of: medals for the rosary centerpieces; Ziploc sandwich and gallon-size storage bags; and monetary donations to purchase rosary supplies. We appreciate any help you can give. If you desire peace in your hearts, in your homes, and in your country, assemble each evening to recite the rosary. Let not even one day pass without saying it, no matter how burdened you may be with many cares and labors. THERE WILL BE NO ADORATION ON MONDAY, JANUARY 15TH DUE TO THE HOLIDAY

Obituary Archdiocese of Baltimore Reverend Thomas John Donaghy October 20, 1928 January 4, 2018 Reverend Thomas John Donaghy was born on October 20, 1928 in Sharon Hill, PA to Henry J. Donaghy and the former Anna R. Houston. He was the fourth of five children. Father Donaghy was baptized at the Church of the Holy Spirit, in Sharon Hill, PA on November 4, 1928. He was confirmed at the same church on October 26, 1937 by the Most Reverend Hugh L. Lamb, D.D. He attended the Holy Spirit Elementary School in Sharon Hill, followed by entrance into West Catholic High School in Philadelphia. Upon graduation from West Catholic High School in June, 1946, he joined the Christian Brothers, at age sixteen. After 15 months of novitiate, Fr. Donaghy moved to De La Salle Scholasticate, in Washington, D.C. There he attended the Catholic University of America where he majored in history. He graduated in 1951. For 26 years as a member of the Christian Brothers, Fr. Donaghy was high school and college teacher, and a sports coach in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. During these years, he earned an M.A. (1954) and a Ph.D. (1960) in history, both at the University of Pittsburgh. He was Director of Summer Sessions at La Salle College for 8 years and after that established a Half-Way House for juvenile offenders. In 1976, Fr. Donaghy entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, in Philadelphia, and in 1977, he was dispensed from his vows as a Christian Brother so he might pursue his call to the priesthood. He was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Baltimore on May 25, 1979, by the Most Rev. T. Austin Murphy, at St. Thomas More Church in Baltimore, MD. Father Donaghy was appointed Associate Pastor to St. Thomas More Parish, in May of 1979. In January, 1980, he was appointed Associate Pastor to St. Philip & James and, in March 1981 to the same position at St. Ursula Parish. He was assigned to be the Academic Dean of St. Mary s Seminary in Roland Park in July, 1982. He was appointed Associate Pastor to the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in July 1988, and Campus Minister of Frostburg University in July, 1991. In June, 1992, he was assigned as Pastor of St. Paul Parish in Ellicott City. Father Donaghy retired in 2003 and returned to Pennsylvania. Father Donaghy was a simple, humble man of prayer who was at heart a pastor. He like things to be simple liturgically and prided himself on giving short homilies peppered with good humor and jokes to bring the message home. During his time in the Archdiocese of Baltimore he was particularly devoted to supporting seminarians and young priests. He served on the Vocations Board for many years and was supportive of former seminarians both spiritually and financially even after they left the seminary. According to Father William Spacek who has been a longtime friend of Father Donaghy, he noted he had a great love for St. Joseph and for education He enjoyed visiting family and friends in the mid-atlantic region, but specifically loved Philadelphia where he was raised. His favorite relaxation was to sit outside St. Paul s Parish in Ellicott City and listen for the trains, since he always loved trains. Both before and after his retirement, Father Donaghy was a prolific writer of books for children including New Catholic Children s Bible, The Lives of the Saints, The Children s Prayer Book, St. Joseph Pocket Prayer Book, My Golden Book of Mary, My Golden Book of Prayers, My Catholic Book of Prayers, Celebrating Mass My Tab Book, We Go To Mass, The Illustrated Book of the Saints II, and many others. He also authored a book on the meaning of the creed and a book entitled Inspirational Thoughts for Every Day. He also participated in the Oral History Project for LaSalle University and provided his perspective on the evolution of that institution during his years there. He spent his retirement years in the Philadelphia area as that was always where he felt most at home. Messages of condolence may be sent to: Mr. Andrew Donaghy, Sr., Esq. 409 Palmers Lane Wallingford, PA 19086 Funeral Arrangements are as follows: Viewing Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 10:00 A.M at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 2130 Franklin Ave, Morton, PA 19070 Funeral Mass Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 11:00 A.M at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 2130 Franklin Ave, Morton, PA 19070 Burial The Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, 626 Baily Rd, Yeadon, PA 19050 Contributions In lieu of flowers, Father Donaghy asked that individuals make donations to Donaghy Fund, La Salle University May he rest in peace. We will be praying for you as you begin your new job as the Pastoral Administrator of St. Thomas Aquinas Church! Weekly Bible Reflection: We re back in ordinary time, but this week s readings are far from ordinary. A common theme in this week s readings is vocation. What is God calling you to do right now? Vocation can mean marriage or priesthood, but it also means our daily call to holiness. God calls us to follow him every day. In this new year, how is God calling you to grow in relationship with him? What s your new year s resolution in regards to how you can grow in your faith? Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" which translated means Teacher, "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see." John 1:35-42 What is Jesus saying to you today? Take some time and listen to him. Volume 1, Issue 17, January 14, 2018

ADVERTISE Call: 410-578-3600 for more information Excerpt from Fr. Joe Breighner s More Reflections Along A Country Road Good Example The most effective way we share our scriptures, our understanding of the sacraments, our prayer life and our image of God, is by how we live. As someone has profoundly put it, People may not always believe what you say, but they will always believe what you do. So our effort is to live as Jesus asked us to live when He gave the criteria for entering the kingdom of God, I was hungry and you fed me; thirsty and you gave me something to drink; naked and you clothed me; in prison and you visited me; a stranger and you took me in Put simply, the best way to show our belief in God is To Order A Copy of Fr. Joe Breighner s Book through the sermon of our lives. Send $10.00 plus $4.50 for postage & handling to When we treat the least person the way we treat God, FATA P.O. Box 4889 Baltimore, MD 21211 then we become believable and God becomes visible.
