6th Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018 -giving. Do this and you will live! Chapter 15 of John s Gospel is part of a long discourse in which Jesus, anticipating his departure (John 14:1-4), provides direction for his disciples. In today s Gospel, we hear Jesus tell his disciples to remain in his love and keep his commandments, in order to experience complete joy. The only commandment expressly stated by Jesus in the Gospel of John is that they love one another. If they do so, the disciples are no longer servants, but friends. Since God shows no partiality, this love is inclusive of all and we see that confirmed when the Holy Spirit is seen in Peter s Gentile hearers. Besides being all-inclusive, Jesus command is sacrificial. He laid down his life for his friends. So our lesson is to love unconditionally and to love all in a spirit of self CONGRATULATIONS to our First Communion Candidates TODAY! These little ones are coming to the Table of the Lord for the very first time to RECEIVE our Lord in His Body and Blood. Through the wonderful teaching and sharing of both Miss Kathy Laubert and Mrs. Kari Novak in our Sunday Sacramental Program, these candidates have learned and loved in so many new ways and are READY to receive the Lord! This is the fullness of their initiation; however Confirmation will be celebrated by them when they reach about 14 years old! Sacramental Preparation is so very important to our students and parish life. It is the center of our faith formation and THANK YOU to all, parents, teachers, catechists, Catechetical Leaders and ALL who have faithfully guided them through this process! Let us continue to pray for them as they LIVE the Gospel! I am hoping and praying that we move ahead with our Capital Roof Project this summer. The School buildings need the final flashing and soffit completed and the Church roof is leaking a bit more. So, as I say, don t look up, but look up and see the water stains above the Altar and also in the Priest s Sacristy. Lots to be done. Not to mention the Fr Garrity Center east end of the building is leaking more as well. Keeping you posted! And THANKS for all you contribute to the financial security of the Parish through your Sunday envelope and special donations! Blessings to you! Father John

Where is God? We know, we believe He is everywhere. And to make it easy for us to understand this presence, to understand this love, we read again in the Scripture that Saint John says, how, how can you say that you love God whom you don t see if you don t love a neighbor whom you see? And he uses a very big word. You are a liar. It is a big word. It is one of those words that is frightening to read in the Gospel, and yet it s really true. And where does this love begin? It begins at home. Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987) Bible Study, Faith Sharing Bible Study will meet on Tuesday from 11:00am - Noon in the chapel to reflect on the Gospel of Mark. As we go more deeply into the gospel we try to stay open to the lessons for the disciples as well for our world today. All that s needed is your Bible and an open heart. No prior knowledge of scripture is necessary. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet on Tuesday at 12:20pm in the chapel for Quiet Prayer. This week Quiet Prayer will begin with Lectio Divina and move into quiet prayer. We will finish at 1:00pm. 12 Step Spirituality 12 step will meet on Thursday, May 10th, from 2:30pm to 4:00pm in the chapel to reflect on step two and readings from the Gospel and the Twelve Steps. Family Perspective Families who abide in love abide in God and God with them. Mothers teach Jesus commandment to love to their children by their generous love and caring discipline for them each day. It s a big deal and I hope that you know just how proud your family and friends are of you! If you are not at the 11.30am mass, you will be (hopefully!) singing the next fresh song choice during the preparation hymn. I have chosen a song that I learned in high school, but many of you may know from the movie, Brother, Where Art Thou. Down to the River to Pray is a simple and yet expressive piece that echoes the joy and affirmation of being in a faith community. I love this song! I am also in Columbus on Saturday, so you won t see me then. As we will be singing a song of praise after communion each weekend mass, I will continue to include the lyrics so that all can join in with our hymn! We worship and adore You, Bowing down before You. Songs of praises singing, Hallelujahs ringing. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, Amen. Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. We appreciate your generosity and thankfulness. We are very happy to announce that we recently received our Giant Eagle Apples for the Students check. It is because of the efforts of everyone who has taken the time to register their Giant Eagle Advantage Card with St. Mary School as the recipient of a percentage of their grocery purchases that we were able to receive a check for over $1,100.00. These funds help defray some of the various expenses incurred at the school. Again, we thank all of you! On Thursday, April 26th the fourth grade class participated in an outdoor environmental program at Coe Lake. The program was put on by high school students from Berea- Midpark.
