Keeping your child s personal information personal If your children give out personal information over the Internet, not only is it easy to track, it is tough to completely remove. Emphasize to them how important it is that they keep personal information private. Make sure that they have a strong username and password that does not reveal anything personal. Encourage them not to give out their e-mail address, if they have one. If your children tell you that they have given out personal information online, contact your Internet Service Provider or the site where the information is posted to see what you can do to have it removed. Second Sunday of Lent www.padreserra.org Page Three My Dear Fellow Parishioners, I am writing this on Sunday evening, March 9, having returned from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The drive down to L.A. was long and the traffic congested, but the occasion was so well worth the effort! I accompanied ten people from our parish who celebrated the Rite of Election with Archbishop Jose Gomez. This is an important ceremony, conducted on the First Sunday of Lent in almost every diocese in the world. It is celebrated with the adults, teens, and older children who will be baptized, confirmed, and receive Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. After the Rite of Election, the candidates for the Easter sacraments are referred to as the Elect. Our parish community is blessed to have ten Elect this year: Alec Caligagan, David Cardiel, Savannah Gonzalez, Howard Kong, Nicolette McCarty, Derrick Timmons, Daniel Tull, Hannah Tull, Katherine Tull, and Samantha Tull. Their photos are displayed in the church to the east of the baptism pool. Election means choice. These ten people have been chosen by God to embrace the mission of Jesus. They have been through a period of formation in the Catholic Christian way of life. They have listened to the Gospels, worshiped with us, and participated in works of service. Based on the testimony of their godparents, the Archbishop declared, The Church, in the name of Christ, calls you to the Easter sacraments. What a joyous moment that was for them! Lent is the Elect s final and more intense period of spiritual preparation for the sacraments. Our support and example during these forty days will encourage them to follow Jesus with greater generosity, and to enter more deeply into the mystery of his death and resurrection. Please pray for them wholeheartedly and often! Blessings, Catherine Shadduck Coordinator of Initiation The 2014 Elect at the Cathedral with Catherine Shadduck (holding the Book of the Elect). We ll run a series of questions Catholics hear during Lent and some evangelizing answers: Abstinence: So why aren t you eating pepperoni pizza on Friday? You love pepperoni pizza. You eat it all the time. Suddenly, you can t have it on Fridays?! What could possibly be going on? It must be that Catholic thing, again. Absolutely! On Fridays during Lent, we particularly remember the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. In memory of this great sacrifice, we continue the tradition of penance and sacrifice abstaining from meat on Fridays is an outward manifestation of an interior reality: the conversion of our hearts. As Pope John Paul II has said, In fact, the external aspects of fasting, though important, do not convey the full measure of the practice. Joined to the practice should be a sincere desire for inner purification, readiness to obey the divine will and thoughtful solidarity with our brothers and sisters, especially the very poor. Christ himself fasted and prayed in the desert. Through fasting and praying, we unite ourselves with the sacrifice of Christ and offer him reparation for our sins and failings. It s a little thing to give him in the face of his ultimate sacrifice, but what a grace that our God accepts and loves little gifts!
