Isaiah 43:10 CUFI Update 2011 From 2010 to 2011 CUFI has grown over 250,000 in membership! The largest Pro- Israel lobbying group in the US! SOME NEWS YOU CAN USE by Pastor Dave McGarrah As most of you know, Jer and I had the privilege of attending the Christians United For Israel Summit in Washington DC in July. Among the many excellent presentations, is always the preparation of all of the delegates to be equipped to speak with one voice on Capital Hill. This is an amazing experience for several reasons: attendees at CUFI represent All 50 states; Every office is visited both the Congressional Representative side and Senate side; Each elected official hears the same message. The talking points were each significant and strategic. I wanted to include them in this edition of the newsletter because I think they are so fitting in helping us to be better equipped to speak intelligently with anyone regarding Israel. So September 2011 many times I ve had people tell me that they are at a loss about what to say in supporting Israel. So, these key points would be well worth knowing and understanding. Here are the three Talking Points: 1. Israel is not the Problem. Pressure on Israel is not the Solution. We were able to thank all of those congressmen who supported resolutions regarding Israel and their top staffers as well. We also urged them to do everything in their power to oppose United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state. Let me give you a bit more information on this one. As you may know, the Palestinians have requested the U.N. to recognize them as a sovereign State. What this means is that, instead of meeting Israel at the negotiating table, they would circumvent the admonition and invitation of Israel to engage in talks, and go directly to the U.N. with their request. Here s what s mind-boggling there are over 100 Nations who have already said that they would vote to recognize them as a Soveriegn state.
All of the input we received on Capital Hill was that they don t believe this will pass, and that the U.S. is planning on using it s veto power, if needed, to keep it from happening. There was actually an appeal to the elected officials to get the President to tell the U.N., that should they decide to actually support this, all financial support will cease. I don t know if the current Administration will do this, but it would be great to encourage and pray that this would be the message sent. So, again, Israel is not the Problem, therefore the solution is not to keep pressuring Israel to keep making concessions in order to accomplish a two state agreement. Israel has gone way out of its way to make offers and invitations to the Palestinians to meet them at the Peace talks. By the way, we haven t even touched on the fact that the Palestinian Authority has joined forces with Hamas the #1 terrorist organization against Israel. How can you be expected to enter peace talks with a terrorist? 2. Providing Security Aid to Israel. President Obama has requested that Congress approve $3.075 billion in security assistance for Israel in the fiscal year 2012 budget. This is actually the amount that Israel has asked for. We asked our leaders to grant this aid as it is crucial to their security and to ours. Israel is not only a crucial ally, our only one in the Middle East and our first line of defense in the global war on terror. When Israel fights Hezbollah and Hamas, it s fighting our enemies as well. So we either support Israel financially to help them keep the enemy contained, or, we spend the money to fight them directly ourselves. This is a good move by the President. 3. Stop Iran. CUFI strongly urged all of our political leaders to not let Iran slip down the list of priority issues. There s no question that economic sanctions against Iran are not getting the job done. Iran continues to bow its neck and defiantly reject any of the appeals from the other nations of the world. The president of Iran has repeatedly threatened to Donec sit amet arcu. 2 wipe Israel off the map. He has also threatened to destroy America. Iran is making steady progress toward building nuclear weapons with which to carry out these threats. We asked our leaders for tougher sanctions, to really tighten the squeeze, and to keep this issue on the table. Senator Leiberman, who spoke at CUFI, has continued to be bold in his call to keep a military option on the table as well. It s so difficult to understand how the world can sit by watching Iran rebelliously reject all of the appeals, and make strides to carry out it s intent to destroy Israel. They have now developed missiles capable of hitting the East coast of the United States. They have vehemently declared that they intend to wipe out the Great Satan, as well as the Little Satan. So, this is one that you d do well to keep before your elected officials. Don t underestimate the power of a phone call or an email. There was a constant flow of awesome speakers at this Summit. Here are some highlights from just a few: Dennis Praeger: We have been seared by antisemitism. Every Jew is a survivor. Not explicable to a non-jew. I occasionally read about rescuers inside every Jew there is a question if there was another thing like the holocaust, would this person help me? Could I stay at your house? To delegitimize Israel makes you anti-semitic. He gave four reasons to support Israel: 1) God promises to bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel. (Those who destroyed Jews in history are not around today!) 2) Evil concentrates first on Jews; then Christians. 3) Because Jews really are the chosen people. There is no other way to explain it, but God has been involved in Jewish history. 4) Because when Jews and Christians work together, there is no force on earth that can stop us. We saw Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who received a very long-standing ovation before he even spoke. Continued on page 5
By Jerri McGarrah but spiritual! It is our call to rise up, pray up and act now in obedience. From out of the comfort zone of our churches and congregations, we are coming! Standing unashamedly with the Land, the People and the God of Israel. We have heard the call and now we are coming! July 11 Portland, Oregon Multnomah Arts Center The Teacher and the Preacher We had our second event of the radio program with about 75 in attendance. With Charlie s help and encouragement, we had a great mixture of Jewish and Christians meeting together. It was really like the first time that this became a platform for conversation of this sort to many. It may not seem like an overwhelmingly great crowd, but I can assure you it was a night to be remembered! I consider it a beginning of something miraculous for all of us! The evening opened with the familiar dialogue Hi, My name is Charlie Schiffman, and I m the teacher. And I m Dave McGarrah, the Preacher. The goal and theme of the evening was to enlighten and educate the audience in why we need to stand with Israel and why it s important for Christians and Jews to realize the Jewish roots of Christianity and how we, as Christians, can love and support Jewish people without an agenda and stand with Israel in the face of severe opposition and pressure by even the government of the United States. Dave and Charlie shared the history and perspective that is often overlooked and miss-taught in our schools today. History, that if left out, will most certainly repeat itself. These conversations are necessary to awaken the sleeping giant the Church! Our power however will never be political As Charlie shared with the group the impact of Christians United for Israel (CUFI) there were many in the room that had never heard of this organization. Charlie went on to share with passion and emotion at how when it has seemed the world is once again turning its hatred and focus on the Jewish people and as the threats are becoming louder and louder that there is now another voice Christians who are rising up and standing FOR Israel not against her! There are people who are reaching out without an agenda, with loving arms who are saying we will not stand silent any longer! You belong to, and with us, and we will not go quietly without a fight! The ancient words come sounding out wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God! Ruth 1:16 In our audience there was an older gentleman with a thick European accent; a survivor of the holocaust whos question to Charlie was, where are all the Jews who need to be here to hear this? What a touching moment that was, to realize that one who lived through the horror is now looking at people who would invite him into their homes to be protected by them! Do you see and understand what God is doing here? My question is now where are the Christians who know this, but who haven t stood up yet to be a part of this? The evening closed with prayer and great conversation. Another beginning of something Godorchestrated! The Teacher and the Preacher, Continued Our efforts in this ministry are expanding. We will have a website up and going within a month. We have added some new equipment to record the Teacher and the Preacher when there are guests to the program. But now more importantly we have been given an opportunity to expand The Teacher and the Preacher into the Seattle area on 2 different stations for an additional $150/month. As we see God working, we re praying for guidance and provision. We want to do all we can in obedience to the open doors He is giving us, so we ask for your prayers as well. By Brandon McGarrah Don t go to Washington D.C. in July if you hate hot weather. And not just high temperatures but an overwhelming, nearly unbearable heat that rises from the sidewalks, radiating from the endless stone buildings that, without a breeze, wraps itself around you like an electric blanket set to high. Add to that the humidity. Whew! Don t go to D.C. in July if you hate feeling wet and sticky from head to toe. Don t go if you can t stand the thin trickle of sweat that crawls slowly down the middle of your back on a hot summer day. Save yourself the discomfort, the dehydration, even the deodorant. Please, do not go to Washington D.C. in July unless you love Israel. Don t make the trip unless you want to make a real difference, not only in your own heart, but with your family and friends, within your church and with your state representatives. Don t go to Washington D.C. in July unless you want to do your part to change the world. I want to change the world! This past July, my parents, my wife and I attended the summit called Christian s United for Israel. We joined over 5,000 Christians and Jews from across the country in Washington D.C. to learn more about Israel, to pray for Israel and to show our support of the Jewish people. How did we do this? As a massive grass roots organization, we spent a day visiting the offices of each state representative and telling them the truth. Israel is our ally and we must support her, not only for biblical reasons, but for the safety and welfare of our own country. As I m sure you already know, we support Israel because God tells us to. We support Israel because God blesses those who bless the Jews, His chosen people. And we support Israel because when Jews and Christians work together, there is no force on earth that can stop us. But the world doesn t see that. The world sees a small country that is struggling. They see a country that needs our help and our strongly opinionated input. They see a nation that needs our guidance on how to live and how to divide their land. The world sees a place where Jews should allow the Palestinians to take as much space as they want. Right now, half a world away, a hungry enemy sits all around Israel, waiting to destroy her, eager to wipe her off the face of the earth. But, you ask, how does this apply to us? How? Because evil concentrates first on the Jews, 2 nd on the Christians and 3 rd on everyone else. We need to understand there is no such thing as the Jews problem. This is all of our problem because Israel is on the forefront of this battle. They go before us to stand up against the enemy. If Israel falls, the rockets will be pointed directly at us. If our nation s leaders don t see the urgency and need of our support for the land of Israel, they are as blind as the rest of the world. Continued on pg 5
Continued from pg 2 Here are some highlights: Israel is your only ally in the Middle East. You don t have to choose between your interests and your values. You get both! Our enemies think we are you and you are us. We have the same ideals. We are committed to the same values. This is the land of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob David and Solomon. This is the Jewish homeland. Israel wants peace with our Palestinian neighbors, but you cannot build peace on a foundation of lies. The greatest lie today is to attempt to deny the connection of the Jewish people to their ancestral homeland. For nearly 4,000 years, Jews have lived continuously in this land. We plan to restore our sovereignty here. We Jews have returned home and we are here to stay. The people of Israel know you will always stand by their side. We appreciate the depth of your commitment. May God bless you and the United States of America. Needless to say, Jer and I wish you could have been there with us. It was both powerful and inspiring. Don t Go... continued So, this last July we made an effort, traveling across the country, to join all of the thousands of Christians with like-minded passion and love for Israel. We celebrated alongside them as we marveled at the tremendous turn out. We put on a tie, a sports coat, a nice summer dress and we all walked up the steps of the air-conditioned capitol, to deliver our message of truth. And we left there, praying that our words were heard. Next year, we hope to once again attend and show our support for the Jewish people and the land of Israel. But until then we want to stay passionate and on fire for this cause. We want to tell you all about the issues and tell you it s ok to stand up for the truth. And now, hopefully God has put it on your heart to say a prayer for Israel and the CUFI convention this next year.
