Course Objectives The University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Integrative Medicine Yoga Teacher Training is designed to prepare health care professionals and non-healthcare professionals with special admittance, to use yoga as an integrative tool in the health care setting. Hospitals and many institutions are seeking easy and effective ways to bring yoga into the workplace and to their patient population. By providing ways to modify the practice, we can ensure the safety of the patient while experiencing the benefits of a yoga practice. This unique training provides special attention to the health benefits of yoga while providing a thorough explanation of postures and alignment, yoga philosophy, meditation, toning and chanting. In addition, current research in the medical field is included in the course material showing the current trends in the field of yoga. High stress work environments put healthcare providers at risk of compassion fatigue and burnout. Our yoga training provides self-care tools including Reiki, Writing for Wellness, and group support through social media platforms and mentoring to help increase empathy, build resilience, increase self-reflection, and prevent burnout. Nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, chiropractors, and psychologists are encouraged to consider this yoga teacher training. By the end of course you will be able to: Demonstrate use of correct dialog in their teaching over 40 asanas by completing 75 hours of learning techniques in the classroom Demonstrate practical yogic teaching principals by including proper warm up for poses, teaching proper breathing techniques, offering contraindications and physical and energetic benefits and carefully suggesting cues to keep students safe Identify the basic anatomy of the legs, hips, pelvis, shoulders, arms, hands and neck in correspondence with the 40 asanas taught Demonstrate knowledge of Patanjali's 8 fold path and connect life style choices and challenges to this yogic philosophy Demonstrate their knowledge of safe teaching by performing assists in lead teachers yoga classes Demonstrate their ability to tone while teaching yoga poses. Demonstrate use of reiki on themselves, both physically and through long distance techniques, as well as be able to perform a reiki treatment on others Instructors Bonnie Tarantino, MFA has worked for the University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Integrative Medicine for over 10 years as their Director of Yoga Programs. Bonnie started practicing yoga at age 18 and has studied in the Sivananda Yoga, Prana Yoga and Thai Yoga traditions. Bonnie blends yoga with Reiki and has been a practicing Usui and Karuna Reiki Master for over 15 years. Bonnie has trained hundreds of heath care professionals in Reiki and yoga, and she has published research revealing the importance of training health care professionals in self-care using integrative tools. Prior to working for the Center, Bonnie owned and operated her own yoga and wellness studio in Storrs, CT. Bonnie has been a member of the Yoga Alliance since its inception in 1999. Nancy McPartland, LCSW-C is a yoga therapist practicing at the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Health and Healing, as well as privately. She teaches the Center for Integrative Medicine s 200-hour & 300-hour Yoga Alliance certified yoga teacher trainings. Ms. McPartland's passion for yoga began in 1989 and she became a teacher in the Iyengar Tradition through Columbia Yoga Center in 1996. Since that time, she has completed two masters degrees in Counseling Psychology and in Social Work. She first began integrating the tools that she learned from yoga in her outpatient family therapy practice after she received the Radiant Child Teacher Training in 1999. Ms. McPartland knew that in order to truly appreciate the health benefits of yoga, she needed to be immersed in the practice. In her private practice, she uses yoga as a tool toward the advancement of mental health via exploring the emotional benefits of the postures. Training Dates This comprehensive training provides dynamic weekly classes. Ten months of yoga teacher training will enable you to become a skilled yoga teacher and will support your desire to create a healthy and yogic way of life. For 35 weeks, the class will meet every Thursday from 6:00pm 9:00pm. In addition to our weekly training, students will be required to attend additional yoga classes each week to enhance and strengthen their personal yoga practice. Four, full-day Reiki retreats will be offered on weekends. A two-day intensive, concluding weekend is required to complete and celebrate the end of the course.
