News from the Heart Together we Grow & Rejoice Thursday, 28th July 2016 YEAR 4 FAITH PAGE Scripture Reading: The Forgiving Father (Luke 15: 21-24) The son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. Reflection The students in Year Four are preparing for their Religious Literacy Assessment. Part of the preparation involves gaining a deeper understanding of the two parables, The Forgiving Father and Zaccheus, and making links to the Sacrament of Penance and the children s own lives. Year Four has begun with the parable of The Forgiving Father. The loving acceptance and forgiveness by Jesus of others, is shown in many Scripture stories, such as the parable of The Forgiving Father. In these stories Jesus calls us to conversion, forgiveness, reconciliation and healing. The students were asked to demonstrate their understanding of the parable through a creative response. Some of their wonderful insights and reflections are displayed below. Brigid used an image of a withered branch brought to life through forgiveness. Jennifer related events in her life to specific parts of the parable. Raymond and Joshua captured the emotions of the characters through their choice of colour. Pugalinee saw how the father in the parable was like God in that he was ready to forgive and bring back his son, just like God does with us when we sin. Principal: Mrs Mary Kastoun Parish Priest: Fr. Mercy in Action: Stage 3 St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out I was delighted to receive a letter from Sarah Chahine on behalf of the Year 6 students who were concerned about the plight of the homeless particularly during these cold winter nights. They put forward some compelling arguments as to why we should raise money and host a Winter sleep out. Some of the reasons they stated were: We would get to experience how homeless people live It will give us the opportunity to be more independent The money we raise will go towards supporting the Saint Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out In this year of Mercy, when we are particularly called to reflect on the mercy values such as service, compassion, justice and dignity, it makes me very proud that the students not only understand the meaning of mercy, but take the initiative to put it into practice. Well done Year 6, your concern for others is truly inspiring and as a result we will be hosting a Winter Sleep Out for the Stage 3 students on Friday 26 th August. Thanks, Mrs Christina Nubla. An Excerpt from the Misericordiae Vultus Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy The mercy of God is his loving concern for each one of us. He feels responsible; that is, he desires our wellbeing and he wants to see us happy, full of joy, and peaceful. This is the path which the merciful love of Christians must also travel. As the Father loves, so do his children. Just as he is merciful, so we are called to be merciful to each other. (Misericordiae Vultus, V9)
Sacred Heart Mercy Values Page 3 The Year of Mercy has been a wonderful opportunity for Sacred Heart to explore and deepen our understanding about the Church s mission of Mercy. Our Evangelisation and Religious Education Goal is focused on developing the student s understanding about Mercy, as shaped by the life and teaching of Jesus contained within the Gospels. To achieve this goal, the teachers explored the mercy values that Catherine McAuley displayed in her life. We decided on seven mercy values that the students, staff and parents in our school would be encouraged to display. The staff created a definition for the word mercy and for each of the mercy values, which would be easy for the students to understand. The mercy values are displayed in all learning spaces in the school, on our Mercy Tree and consistently referred to during lessons, particularly when creating links to scripture passages. The teachers also use the Mercy Values as a basis when giving the students the Honour Awards.
Peer Support Sacred Heart students have enjoyed their first lesson of Peer Support. Our Year 6 leaders will be running 9 Peer Support lessons where all the students will learn how positive relationships are the foundation for making strong connections within different aspects of life. Congratulations to all the students on a great first effort. Page 4

Year 6 Student Snapshot Page 7 Name: : Phillip Ynson-Lacaulan Date of Birth: 06/12/2004 Favourite memory of school My favourite memory was going to camp especially Canberra. It was loads of fun getting to see the different places. Contributions I have made to the school community I have participated in the soccer and touch footy gala days. I have also contributed in swimming carnivals. One way I think I can make a difference in the world I can change the world by spreading the mercy values and the stories and parables that Jesus has told. Another way to make a difference is by following in Jesus footsteps. I can show what is right and what is wrong. My ambition for the future My ambition is to be an aeronautical engineer that works in the Royal Air Force. Another one is to be an electrical engineer. Words to live by: My Motto Anything is possible, so believe in yourself and you will succeed. What makes Sacred Heart Primary School unique? What makes Sacred Heart is the people there, they are all nice and all follow the mercy values and they all follow in Jesus footsteps. Another reason is we all join as one to reach our goals.
