Spring 2017 Forming Faith Church of the Epiphany Faith Formation and Youth Ministry Newsletter New Programs at Epiphany Catechesis of the Good Shepherd This school year we piloted the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program with preschoolers of the Parish. God has already called children into a relationship with him. We need to provide an environment to allow the children to explore the mysteries and wonders of our faith. That prepared environment is called the Atrium. The Atrium is child centered and developmentally compatible with beautifully made materials. The adults or Catechist is certified through the National CGS. We started with one session meeting once a week, expanded to 2 along with the Family Faith preschoolers meeting 1-2 times a month. Over 34 children have been able to experience Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at Epiphany this year. We are praying about directions to grow the availability of CGS to our community. Some of the comments we have received: Child Responses This is the best so far after being shown the Nativity and Adoration of the Shepherds. Inner Peace when talking about Shalom. When asked what else can we thank God for Jesus Christ is Lord. Parent Comments What beautiful things you are teaching our children! Love what Lucy shared with me today! John loves to come and watches more at Mass. Veronica tells me how beautiful the altar looked and how she prayed. The HOUR - For Young Adults Contact Eric Duffy, High School Youth Minister, for more details. This past January saw the beginning of a new Young Adult Ministry at the Church of the Epiphany entitled The HOUR. Young Adults 18 and older gathered to praise our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist with music and silent prayer. The HOUR s beautifully simple concept strives get back to the heart of what it means to Christian: Spending time with our Lord. So often in ministry we get caught up the need to make things special and unique but in reality all we truly need to sustain us is Jesus. The HOUR takes place on Friday nights from 7-9pm and usually is held in the Youth Room. We enter in to prayer reflecting a bible reading that reminds us that Jesus comes to us here, now, in this hour, where ever we are. We spend an hour worshiping our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and then gather at a local restaurant or bar for socialization. All young adults, 18 and older, of the parish are welcome. See the bulletin or website for future dates.

Forming Faith Spring 2017 Ministry for Families Food, Fellowship and Formation: Family Faith at a Glance Making disciples of Christ is our primary goal in Faith Formation at Epiphany, but even disciples need a good, hot meal every now and then. Parents appreciate this inexpensive option made possible by our beloved Hospitality Coordinator, Rhonda, and a team of volunteers, which allows busy families to have a sit-down meal on an evening that might otherwise mean a drive-through meal. It also provides families an opportunity to socialize with others in our programs. The fellowship continues and the formation begins as children in grades K-5 are taken to their classrooms to be taught a lesson by trained volunteer catechists. But, the fellowship and formation isn t only for the children After parents take their children to their classrooms, parents return to the cafeteria to learn together about how to teach their home lessons and also hear from quality speakers who encourage them and give practical advice on how to raise their children to be happy, healthy and holy Catholics. Among the favorite presentations was one on raising virtuous children, by Michael Adkins, Academic Dean from Saint Agnes. Parents also appreciated Fr. Vaughn Treco s talk on the meaning of suffering and Fr. VanDenBroeke s presentation on the Liturgical Seasons. One parent wrote, These evenings help me to think about what s most important in life and what I need to do better to raise saints. A new parent wrote, This is my first year in the program and it has inspired me to be more faithful and set a better example for my children. All adults of the parish are welcome to come in and hear these speakers and they can learn about these talks from the weekly church bulletin. Parents and children also tell us that they look forward to the times throughout the year when parents and children gathered together for liturgical and devotional and service opportunities. This year, these included Adoration and Benediction, Stations of the Nativity and Stations of the Cross a Family Service Evening. Ministry for our Youngest Children Paschal Mystery and the Young Child The gifts and signs of Baptism are introduced to the children in their first year of the Atrium. They are called by name to come forward and receive their candle from the Christ candle. The children recognize the Light of Christ that is the Paschal candle, is the same light that they carry within themselves. The light inside the heart shines on the outside in the white garment. The white garment is a sign of cleanliness and new life. It shows we are children of the light. The light given to us is God s gift and we receive it in ourselves because, in the first place, Christ s light has overcome the darkness. Celebrate the Light. For information please contact Mary Minor, Coordinator of CGS, mminor@epiphanymn.org 2

Forming Faith Spring 2017 Sunday School On December 18, 2016 The Sunday School children held their annual Christmas Program. Families were invited to watch the children sing the songs they ve been learning during their Sunday School classes, dress in costume as nativity characters, and share our exciting Faith which they ve been learning so far this school year with friends and family who gathered. Before their performance, children learned who these important characters in the nativity are. Angels are God s special messengers. They are very strong, powerful beings who keep us safe. Shepherds take care of sheep in fields and something amazing happened to them the night they found out about Jesus birth. Our theme this Sunday School year has been light as we ve seen this continually throughout many Gospel readings. Jesus came into a world of sin and darkness, but God had a plan to send His own Son, Jesus, to be the Light of the world. In the manger scene displayed in the main church, a beautiful light shines directly unto baby Jesus. On the fifth Sunday of Ordinary time, we heard the Gospel of the light being placed under a bushel basket and Jesus tells us that YOU are the light of the world. All along we ve been hearing that He is the Light of the world, and now the children hear that we are. This is because Jesus s light is inside each of us. The children learned that at the Baptism of the Lord that light was put into our souls at our own baptism and will always glow there for us to share with everyone around us. Ministry for High Schoolers The March For Life 2017 This past January, just after the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, hundreds of thousands of peaceful protesters marched to the supreme court in Washington D.C. demanding the right to life for the unborn. Epiphany, along with the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, was among that number. 35 adults, young adults, and teens (along with our very own Fr. Dufner) traveled once again in coach buses over night in pilgrimage to the march. We thank the Lord for blessing this year with warm weather. Our Epiphany group, known for being the best leaders within the Archdiocese group, prayed, chanted, and joyfully proclaimed the truth that life begins at conception. They were greeted many friends, chief among them was our very own Hannah Hoekman, winner of the 2016 Champion For Life, now a college freshman at the Benedictine University. Teens returned more determined then ever to be the generation that ends abortion. If you would like to join us for next year s pilgrimage, please contact Eric Duffy, High School Youth Minister. 3

Forming Faith Spring 2017 Ministy for Middle Schoolers Extreme Faith Weekend Last December, for the first time, 53 7th and 8th grade participants and 11 high school small group leaders attended Extreme Faith Weekend (EFW) in Wisconsin Dells. Extreme Faith Weekend seeks to provide youth the opportunity for a personal encounter with Christ, especially through the Eucharist the source and summit of Christian life. The theme of the retreat was Face to Face. The participants listened to talks about three different faces of Jesus - transfigured, suffering, and glorious - and what they teach us about Him, as well as ourselves. Throughout the retreat there was time for prayer, Mass, adoration, and fun at the waterpark, and more! The youth were also able to build community in small group and large group setting. EFW is designed as an extension of Extreme Faith Camp (EFC) which is held in the summer at Big Sandy Camp in McGregor, MN. Middle schooler ares encouraged to attend both EFW (next December) and EFC (June 26-June 30th). Join us Monday, June 26th Friday, June 30th for Extreme Faith Camp (EFC)! EFC is a Catholic summer camp for middle school aged youth (current 6th-8th graders). At EFC there is Mass, Adoration, praise and worship, Confession, small group time, and themed large group talks. The theme this year is Christ, the Light of the World. EFC is held at Big Sandy Camp in McGregor, MN which has tons of activities such as swimming, archery, field games, water slides, a petting zoo, crafts, hiking, laser tag, and much more! I hope you ll join us for this amazing experience! Registration forms can be found on the parish website or outside of the youth room. Registration deadline: April 21st. If you have any questions, contact Carly Radke, Middle School Youth Minister at 763.862.4334 or cradke@epiphanymn.org. Summer Stretch Summer Stretch is a summer program that combines prayer, service, formation, and social activities for current 6th-8th graders. This year we will be completing service projects at sites such as feed my Starving Children, the Little Sister of the Poor, The Pines, ACBC food shelf, and more! Fun events will include Zero Gravity, Bunker Beach, Brunswick Zone, and Valley Fair! Registration forms can be found on the parish website or outside of the youth room. Registration deadline: June 1st. If you have any questions, contact Carly Radke, Middle School Youth Minister at 763.862.4334 or cradke@epiphanymn.org. 4

Forming Faith Spring 2017 Ministy for Adults Variety offers Options for Adults to Learn and Grow At Epiphany, we believe that faith formation should never end. Therefore, we strive to offer meaningful opportunities for all of our members, including adults of all ages. The New Year brought Deacon Bruce and his wife, Pat, back on campus for their second study of the year, Walking Toward Eternity: Engaging the Struggles of Your Heart. In this eight-part bible study featuring Jeff Cavins, 49 participants were inspired to live fuller lives, by being drawn into an intimate encounter with Christ. The study uses daily prayer and scripture to open participants eyes to the obstacles in their Christian walk and outlines practical steps to overcome them. New Parish Small Group Studies formed as well, and included a range of ages of adults. A large Young Adult Group met and studied the book Consoling the Heart of Jesus on Tuesday nights, while a smaller group of mothers met and studied Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother. While some small groups met in homes, such as the group studying Lectio:Prayer and another called Happiness, on-site groups studied Lectio:Peter and Fr. Kubista led a short Saturday morning series called A Walk Through the Pascal Mystery. Even adults who chose not to join a small group can access various studies, programs, movies, books and audio presentations through our parish subscription to the Formed.org website. By entering our parish code 79f515 and creating a profile, they can do so at no charge to them. Recognizing the need to support parents in teaching their children about love, life and growing up to be strong, smart and pure, parents of 5th and 7th graders with their children attended our new Mother/Daughter and Father/Son Seminars this Spring. While mothers and their daughters met together guided by specialize video clips and facilitated discussion, the fathers and their sons were doing the same elsewhere in the parish. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with one father reporting that it was very beneficial at an age appropriate level. I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned to talk to my son in a truthful way. To be able to talk to your son about love and loving others in a respectful way is important. A mother reported that the program was very helpful and the discussion time and videos were great! We also made a concerted effort this year to bring speakers into our Family Faith Formation program (for families of K-5 students) that would appeal to a range of adults. See more about those speakers in the article on Family Faith. If you have any questions, contact Suzanne Lewis at slewis@epiphanymn.org or 763-862-4336. 5
