From The Pastor Parish Renewal: From Maintenance to Mission Fr James Mallon has turned his parish, St. Benedicts in Nova Scotia Canada, into a powerhouse of renewal and mission. He began by having special sessions of the Alpha Course in Christianity every Monday night in the parish hall for 10 consecutive weeks. The Alpha Course was developed by an evangelical Anglican parish in London. At first, not everyone was on board. Monday nights were for the card club and one woman shouted at him: We don t need to know about Jesus. We need to play cards! The sessions challenged the parishioners who were used to thinking of catechesis or faith formation as something you do as children. Fr. Mallon was convinced that drastic action was needed and he persisted. Over four years nearly 2000 people participated and have come to know Jesus as the living Lord. Some of the participants are his own parishioners; the rest are un-churched or are from other parishes and churches. Alpha embraces the belong-believe-behave approach to evangelization. It creates a warm, welcoming, non-threatening, non-pressurized and nonjudgmental environment. Mallon uses the standard Alpha course: a series of interactive sessions at which the Christian faith is discussed in an informal, fun and friendly environment. It works, he says. Alpha has been at the heart of my experience of renewal. All over the world, Alpha groups follow the same process. They meet for a meal and then there is a talk followed by discussion in small groups. As Mallon explains it, through the 10-week process trust begins to build, the people begin to let their guard down and get the message. Then truth of Jesus and his Gospel begins to knock on the door of their hearts and, by the end of the 10 weeks, many of them have been led to a personal encounter with Jesus and make the decision to follow him. Their lives are changed and transformed; they come alive in their experience of God s family, the Church. Evangelization is the key to everything. In the last verses of Matthew s Gospel we read that Jesus said to the disciples: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20). Mallon loves to ask his audience, which is the vital verb in this passage, the heart of the task that gives Christians their identity: is it to go, to make, to baptize or to teach? Very, very few get the right answer, which is: to make disciples! This tells us there is a deep, unconscious bias against the very task that the Lord placed at the heart of his mandate. All the other missionary aspects of the Church (going, baptizing, teaching) revolve around the making of disciples. He says, the Church is the only organization that primarily exists for the sake of those who do not belong. [As I always say when we pray for newcomers, we exist to fill the empty places in the pew beside us]. This means, we must begin to rethink our model of parish life from membership-based people to proclaimers of the good news; from maintenance to mission. It is not that the Church of Christ has a mission, but rather the mission of Jesus has a Church. The basic parish community in this mold is where parishioners are enabled to reflect in a personal way on the Word of God, on their faith and on their call to holiness and discipleship of Jesus in their daily lives. Fr Mallon believes in a step-by-step process of transformation to this end. He says that sooner or later a parish that runs Alpha will experience a tipping point When this happens, the experience of Sunday Eucharist will begin to change. Fr Mallon says, We need to place the Lord s mandate for his Church at the center of all we do. Do you think we could do this at BSP? (Adapted from an article by Diana Klein, 24 June 2017, THE TABLET) Welcome New Parishioners Registration Forms are available in the church office or by email.
