VOCATIONS Deacon Eleuterio Mireles, Jr. stjohneudesvocations@gmail.com Sargon Younan (818) 687-2041 syounan@stjohneudes.org Fr. Jean-Michel Amouriaux was elected Superior General of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (Eudists) on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the 66 th General Assembly held in Mexico City. He has become the 26 th successor of St. John Eudes as superior of the Eudists. A Eudist since 1993, Fr. Jean-Michel was ordained a priest in 1994. He was a parish priest in Brétigny-sur-Orge (Essonne) and soon after was commissioned to work with an international team of Eudists to help renew the Eudist spirituality throughout the world. From 2001 to 2008, Fr. Jean-Michel became the director of the Eudist Spirituality Center called La-Roche-du-Theil (Ille-et-Vilaine) while teaching spiritual theology at Saint-Yves seminary in Rennes, France. He joined the seminary faculty in 2008, before becoming the seminary rector in 2009. Let us thank the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who have once again shown their love and mercy to our little Congregation.

Page 2 January 15, 2017 Today, Isaiah heralds the kind of Messiah John s Lamb of God will be. Servant appears three times in three lines, suggesting an ideal for us to embrace. This Servant s priority is to bring back, gather, raise up, and restore Israel. But the mission is more expansive: to be a light to the nations, bearing God s salvation to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:6). Sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy (1 Corinthians 1:2), as Paul describes us, we servants of that Servant must consider our corner of the world the ends of the earth, and plan how to bring grace and peace to those we meet who need Jesus light and warmth. John s proclamation of Jesus as the Lamb of God should trigger memories of contexts saving and nourishing, transcending space and time and opening us to eternity, into which our relationship with Jesus as the Lamb of God has inserted us: the liturgy of the Passover (past) fulfilled in Jesus, the true Paschal Lamb, who offers himself unceasingly in the liturgy of the Eucharist (present), while giving us a foretaste of the heavenly liturgy (future). Most comforting, Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the [sin/sins] of the world (John 1:29). In Gospel passages, sin appears in the collective singular, affirming Jesus lifting away the whole crushing burden of a fractured world. In liturgical texts, the plural sins is often used, inviting us to entrust to Christ s infinite compassion our own personal, multiplied share in the brokenness of the wider world. J.S. Paluch FR. Page 7 January 15, 2017 POPE S INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY Christian Unity: That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity. DID YOU KNOW? Help children communicate by reading between the lines... When children express that something is wrong at school or with other activities, it's often the job of caregivers to read between the lines to determine what's really going on. They might say "I'm bored" and need your guidance finding a better school-life balance or engaging in more challenging academic work. Ask them to give examples and to help you understand what is going on. If the child is still being vague, remind them that they can tell you anything and that you'll listen with an open mind. As parents and caregivers, you have the opportunity to help kids deal well with negative feelings and challenges. And, if they are being mistreated in some way, keeping an open line of communication with kids will enable you to be their advocate. Page 8 January 15, 2017 Virginia Daniels SCHOOL CORNER SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE is on Sunday, January 29 from 10:00am - 1:00pm. Family, friends, prospective students and their families are invited to visit the classrooms, meet the teachers, and view students' work on display. SCHOOL HOLIDAY on Monday, January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Virginia is the smiling face that greets you in the parish office. She answers your questions, schedules your mass requests and points you in the right direction. She is our St. John Eudes Office receptionist. However, when she is not on duty, she is volunteering her time in many different areas. Her work day may end at 6:00pm, but not her participation in the life of the parish. Back in 1992 Virginia came to St. John Eudes as a Sponsor in the RCIA program. She said that she would sit in the back of the group and listen. You couldn t miss her though. She was the one who listened intently and offered heartfelt responses. The whole RCIA team at various times approached her and asked her to join the team. She says that she held back for a while but was soon convinced that she was wanted and needed in the program. Over the years she has sponsored more than 15 people and helped them to become fully initiated Catholics. She is a certified Catechist and attends Religious Congresses and training sessions. Virginia says, This is how we grow in our faith. She has been the sponsor coordinator for many years and is the go to person for any of the team s administrative needs. Each week she sets up the meeting space, making sure that it is welcoming and comfortable, and then stays and participates in the discussions. Virginia s involvement in volunteering started long before her appearance at St. John Eudes. She was involved in youth ministry in her parish at St. Ferdinand s in San Fernando for years, and now serves as a Eucharist Minister there. She is also active in the African American Catholic Center for Evangelization at St. Eugene s Parish in Los Angeles, and is a member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver, Ladies Auxiliary. She has just recently been elected to be their Financial Secretary. Virginia has a beautiful way of answering the question How are you today? She answers Blest by the Best! St. John Eudes is truly blessed to have such a lovely lady volunteering her time and talents. Student Body Mass for "Peace and Justice" is on Thursday, January 19 at 8:15. All are welcome.
