P K C H (U.S.A.) TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 25, 2017 The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood. John 1:14 from The Message by Eugene Peterson A Christ-centered Community Called to Deepen Faith, Serve Others and Foster Fellowship
Welcome to worship WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today s service Today we welcome Rev. Fernando Rodríguez to our Kirk family! Fernando joins us to help guide our mission and outreach ministry in Pontiac and beyond. Please pray for him, his wife, Kecelyn, and children, Ma3hias (4) and Sionely (3), as they transition to southeast Michigan especially since tomorrow he will join our mission team in Belize! The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life. St. Francis of Assisi If you have children Childcare is available for infants and children age 0 3 from 9:15 a.m. 12:15 p.m. in the nursery (Abbey 24). Please check children into the nursery before the service. During our 9:30 a.m. Garden Service, children age 4 through rising 5th grade begin worship in the garden with their families. About today s hymns MUSIC NOTES From All That Dwell Below the Skies is a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 117 by the great eighteenth century English hymn writer Isaac Wa3s. Wa3s is a pivotal figure in the history of hymnody in that prior to Wa3s hymnody in Calvinist tradition was limited to the Psalms. Wa3s took the Psalms and clothed its language with the message of the New Testament. The tune Lasst uns erfreuen dates from the early seventeenth century and was originally composed for an Easter text. Of German origin, it was introduced to the English speaking world in 1906 through its inclusion in The English Hymnal by its music editor, Ralph Vaughan Williams. Take My Life was wri3en by Frances Ridley Havergal, a nineteenth century poet and author of many hymns. She was fluent in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and memorized the entire book of Psalms, Isaiah, and most of the New Testament. The tune Hendon takes is name after a village in Middlesex, England. About today s solo and choral music I Want Jesus to Walk With Me spiritual, arr. Robyn N. Lanier This is an anonymous spiritual. Though this spiritual focuses on a plea for Jesus to walk alongside us, there is an element of assurance that His answer is yes. I want Jesus to walk with me, I want Jesus to walk with me; All along my pilgrim journey, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me. In my trials, Lord, walk with me, In my trials, Lord, walk with me; All along my pilgrim journey, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me. I want Jesus to walk with me, I want Jesus to walk with me; All along my pilgrim journey, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me. (continued on page 10) 6

(continued from page 6) How Firm a Foundation MUSIC NOTES Early American melody, arr. William Whitehead This text dates from 1787 and was wriken by John Rippon, an English Baptist who became famous and wealthy by publishing a hymnbook titled A Selection of Hymns which included this hymn. The hymnbook won immediate popularity in the United States, where this text was wed with this American folk tune in the early nineteenth century. The tune is pentatonic, which means it uses only the first, second, third, fifth and sixth notes of the musical scale. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He hath said, To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid: I ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand. When through the deep waters I call thee to go, The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; For I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless, And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I ll never, no, never, no never forsake. 10
