Page 3 January 1, 2016 From our pastoral Leadership Dear Friends, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Today, 2017 holds only opportunity and potential. Some people make resolutions (that they may or may not keep) and some dismiss the practice as too idealistic or unrealistic. The practice of reviewing last year and considering what modifications we can make to improve the coming year can be a good thing. Along with the standard goals of working toward healthier living, more organization, increased efficiency, and/or improved relationships with family and friends may I suggest that you also ask God what his plan is for your life in the coming year. When I was in graduate school, we wrote countless papers called theological reflections. Recently, I ve appreciated this ability to stop and consider how God has been working (sometimes unnoticed) in the everyday things of life it s not merely academic, but a practical and extremely beneficial practice, not unlike the Ignatian Examen. At Christmas, we celebrated the coming of Emmanuel, God with us and God IS with us, not only at Christmas but at all times. I invite you to prayerfully consider how God was present in your life during the past year and what God s plans are for your 2017. How will you increase your faith in the coming year, and make this world a better place by reflecting the love of Christ. As a parish community, when we gather at Mass and at other times, we remind each other of how Christ is in our midst, we encourage and support one another, and challenge ourselves to be better, not for our own benefit but for the love of God and his people. We are planning some interesting and inspiring events for the coming year. I look forward to our shared journey of faith in 2017. Let s continue to pray for one another, Marti Lundberg Worship & spiritual life JANUARY EVENTS TO PLAN FOR: RCIA is on Monday nights Youth Group on Tuesday nights Peaceful Crafters on Thursdays Safe Environment Class is January 11 th 1 st Sacrament classes begin January 15 th Teen Confirmation Classes continue January 15 th Theology on Tap w/ Fr. Bryan January 22 nd Adult Education w/ Fr. Bryan January 25 th Adult Confirmation classes begin January 29 th These are just a few of the happenings in our church for the beginning of 2017. Get involved, be a volunteer, look to live a more fulfilled live. Join a ministry commission or club. One evening a month that will give you great joy. Happy New Year! COMMUNITY DINNER WITH MARTI & FR. BRYAN Monday, February 27 th, 6:00 PM You can sign up for a community dinner potluck by calling the parish office or clicking on this link from the parish web site (www.stbens.net). We are looking forward to sharing a meal and converstion! ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was born into an Episcopalian family and later in life joined the Catholic Church. She was married, a mother of five, and a founder of a religious order, the Sisters of Charity. At the invitation of the Archbishop of Baltimore, Elizabeth founded a girl s school which gave rise to the parochial school system in the United States. She was canonized by Paul VI in 1975. (2017 Sourcebook pg. 50) ST. BASIL & ST. GREGORY Close friends as students in Athens, Basil and Gregory fought together as friends against the Arian heresy, which denied the full divinity of Christ. Their writings also aided the Church s understanding of the Holy Spirit and the Trinity. With Basil s brothers, Gregory of Nyssa and Peter of Sebaste, they are among the Capadocian Fathers. Gregory is known as the Theologian: by the Eastern Churches. Basil is known as the father of Eastern monasticism and had a great influence on the development of liturgy, East and West. ( 2017 Sourcebook pg.49) ADULT EDUCATION JANUARY 25 TH AFTER 6:30 PM MASS "Built of Living Stones: An open forum for all parishioners on our worship space regarding what works well and what dreams do we have in the future?" Join Fr. Bryan and Marti Lundberg as we take a closer look at our church, both the dwelling and our family in an effort to plot our tomorrow..... HOME VISITS BY CABRINI MINISTERY Are you aware that the Eucharist is taken to the sick and homebound of the parish. If you, or someone you know, are unable to attend Mass and need to have the Eucharist brought to your home, call the Parish Office at 206-632-0843 to have a visit. Knowing God is victorious over all evil, that he can break down all obstacles with his grace and forgiveness and that he has come to save everyone is the reason for Christian hope. In fact, it's awful when we find a Christian who has lost hope, thinking "it's over," and there is nothing on the horizon. Evil will not triumph forever, there is always an end to suffering. Desperation is conquered because God is among us, born in a manger, in Bethlehem. ~~ Pope Francis
