THE BOOK OF PHILIPPIANS JOY FOR EVERY SITUATION PHILIPPIANS CHAPTER 1:1-7 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SMX-876 AUGUST 16, 2015 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: part 3 DISCOVERING THE PRESENCE OF GOD AND HIS JOY IN EVERY SITUATION SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Joy, Peace, Power, Comfort, Growth, Living Introduction to the Text: Philippians 1:1-7 Philippians 1:1-7 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; 7 just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace. Fear, Insecurities, Doubt, Unworthiness These are phobias that have plagued the human race since the fall of man. These Life Killers flow through our veins and carry with them a poison that robs us of knowing why and how we should live and enjoy God. John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. 1.) For this new family vs. 1 1a.) Designed by God Himself vs. 1a 1b.) Made up of all who believe vs. 1b 1c.) Wherever the Gospel is preached vs. 1c 2.) For all that we have been given vs. 2 2a.) We have been favored by God vs. 2a 1

2b.) We have been comforted by God vs. 2b 2c.) We have been entreated by God vs. 2c 3.) For our future that is certain vs. 3-7 3a.) Our glorification is assured vs. 3-4 3b.) Our sanctification is complete vs. 5-6 3c.) Our identification is in Christ vs. 7 4.) For all that You have promised vs. 6 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; The Nature of a Promise Is only as good as the Promise Keepers Ability is to Keep the Promise. 4a.) That He will answer your hearts cry vs. 6a 6a being confident Your Greatest Desire is to now be Acceptable to God. Philippians 3:9 That I be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; Our Confidence comes from His reliability, dependability, soundness, confirmation! 2 Peter 1:4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. We all enjoy the confidence that we have in Science, Real Science. Why because real science comforts us and gives us assurances that every time your airplane s lift is greater than its drag you re going to fly! That s why the pilot always tells you about the destination before take- off because he is fully intending to get himself and you to the destination on your ticket. He doesn't wring his hands and stutter on the microphone, I sure hope we make it everybody. He has no doubt that he ll have enough lift to get that plane off the ground, in fact, he s counting on it. 2

The word confident here is truly an amazing word and here s why: confident pei qw peitho, pi -tho; to be convinced, to be pacified, to be assured of. It carries with it the meaning of knowing that what is being discussed is yours to know by experience. I can give witness or testimony to the fact. It s in the perfect-active-participle, Meaning that whatever has happened in the past, is what I am experiencing now and I can be sure it will be like that in the future. God was faithful back then. That means He is going to be faithful today, So I can rest knowing that He will be faithful in the future. Robert Gromacki Points Out: We are to be rest assured, at ease, letting Him do the work. This confidence in God s ability is the - Settled persuasion of the mind effecting both thought and action 1John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. 4b.) That He will deal with the details vs. 6b 6b of this very thing, The LORD will Not Only take care of all the details in your life, but of this particular one - - most definitely. Our God deals in specifics. He is the God of particulars. His natural creation speaks to us of His eye for detail. Psalm 8:1.3 O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, Matthew 6:25-30 Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 28 So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Romans 5:5 Now hope (based on a promise) does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, 4c.) That He will start and finish the work vs. 6c 6c that He who has begun a good work in you 3

This, He Who, is structured in a way that demands 3 questions be asked? (1) Who did it? = God did it. Who did it? What was done? Where did it happen? The 3 questions are in the past tense, did was did. Ephesians 1:4-5 Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to (2) What was done? = A good work. the good pleasure of His will, This is referring to the benefits of Christ s atonement (a) He, God, Justified us at the Cross of Christ. (b) He, God, Sanctified us to His purposes. (c) He, God, Glorified us before His presence. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Translation be serious about cooperating with God as He does His work. Do not resist His plan, His protocol, and His purpose for your life. Psalm 139:17-18 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (3) Where did it happen? = In you. What God started in you was a good thing. He is the originator of it and He is dedicated to completing it on this side of eternity, (which is at death). I m speaking to the Christian right now, you who have experienced the salvation work of God in your life. But Jack, I feel so unworthy and I m sick over my spiritual weakness. 1 John 3:19-20 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. 20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 4

4d.) That He will do whatever needs to be done vs. 6d 6d will complete it I like to call this The Perseverance of God Which Gives Me Confidence / Assurance Can you attest to the fact that God has started a work your life? If that s true, Then God will never stop doing a work in your life. This is a fascinating thing to understand. In and From Eternity, God sees us already completed. He sees us now, what we desire to become. Romans 4:17 God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; Nothing that God plans to do is ever left undone. He never leaves anything in ruins or abandoned. God s Greatest Work wasn t in Genesis 1 at creation. God s Greatest Work wasn t in Genesis 2 making mankind The Bible Reports that Jesus said from the cross; It is finished! And bowing His head, He dismissed His spirit. - John 19:30. Confidence / Assurance John 10:27-28 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. Confidence / Assurance Romans 8:29-35 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 5

6e.) That He will guarantee His promises vs. 6e 6e until the day of Jesus Christ; The Day of Jesus Christ or The Day of Christ. The Day of Jesus Christ is His Appearing for His People, The Church. Whenever the Rapture Happens It will end the churches role on earth. Philippians 1:10 That you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, So lean into this truth that... Everything has been done for this to work to be completed. Now it is up to you to let Him finish up! 1 John 3:1-2 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; (happy event) that where I am, there you may be also. 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven (The Day of Jesus Christ) with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together (raptured) with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another (happy event) with these words. Titus 2:13 looking for the blessed hope (happy event) and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, End of Study Copyright August 16, 2015 by Jack Hibbs 6
