PASTOR S PAGE This Wednesday the Archdiocese announced that it will close three schools at the end of this school year: Seton Keough High School, John Paul Regional Elementary School, and St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School. It also announced that it would merge St. Clement Mary Hofbauer Elementary School with St. Michael the Archangel School. The closures, no doubt, have evoked the painful memories of the 13 schools that were closed in 2010, including our own St. Bernardine s School. In the course of 7 years, the Archdiocese with have closed 17 schools most located in the City. The primary reason cited for these closures was declining enrollment, which, no doubt, was the result of rising tuition costs that families in most City neighborhoods could no longer afford. Without sufficient tuition income, and with little to no financial support from the Archdiocese, these schools failed financially. After the 2010 closings, the Archdiocese designated five schools as community schools : Holy Angels School in Southwest Baltimore; Archbishop Borders School in Southeast Baltimore; Ss. James and John School in East Baltimore; Cardinal Shehan School in Northeast Baltimore; and Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland. A key feature of a community school is that the Archdiocese subsidizes the school s operations (typically paying for all employee benefits), which relieves the school of having to fund itself completely from tuition income. As a result, Holy Angels School (of which I am a Board Member and Chaplain) has actually grown since its inception in 2010. It will most likely be moved from its current location at Seton Keough to a new building constructed specifically for Holy Angels. The location of that new building has yet to be determined, but it will probably be in West Baltimore. Holy Angels is an example of how Catholic Schools can thrive in the City if they are supported by the wider Archdiocese. Pray that our leadership will continue to explore innovative ways to maintain the presence of affordable Catholic Schools, especially in the poorest neighborhoods of our City. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TEAR-OFF SHEET FOR OCTOBER 30, 2016 Your Name: Full Address: Home Phone: Cell: E-mail address: ( ) I am a visitor ( ) Send me a registration form ( ) Please send me envelopes ( ) Please have Fr.
