Speaking in languages (i.e. tongues) γλῶσσα glossa: the tongue as part of the mouth, a spoken language διάλεκτος dialektos: speech, language, dialect (of a nation or ethnicity) φωνή phone: a voice, a sound Glossa is used 231 times in the Bible. In every instance, it refers to human language or the tongue of the human body. It also refers to the spiritual gift of speaking in another language. Dialektos is used 8 times in the Bible, but never refers to the gift of tongues. Phone is used 816 times in the Bible, but never refers to the gift of tongues. Jonathan W. Lankford s testimony from experience: From my own observation, the speaking in tongues done today in Christian denominations is not a language but a combination of repeated sounds. One person repeated, A-bdya a-bdya a-bdya. Another person repeated, Ho sha-kami-la-at-sa and different combinations of the same sounds. The complexity of any real language requires more variation. It is a necessary conclusion that the speaking in tongues I have experienced are sounds in repetition not whole sentences. Therefore, if the tongues in churches today were truly the same gift as seen on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, the Greek word for this gift would be phone, speaking in utterances or sounds. But this is not the case in the Bible; in the Bible, it is always glossa language. Dr. Nathan Busenitz testimony from reading early church history: 1 In spite of a relative de-emphasis placed on tongues-speaking by the church fathers (who speak of prophecy much more than they do of tongues), they are not altogether silent on the issue. In fact, their collective writings overwhelmingly suggest that they associate tongues-speaking with a supernatural ability to speak rational, authentic foreign languages. That proposition is directly supported by Irenaeus, Hippolytus, Hegemonius, Gregory of Nazianzen, Ambrosiaster, Chrysostom, Augustine,Leo the Great, and implied by others (such as Tertullian and Origen). 2 1 Busenitz, Nathan. Gift of the Spirit: Foreign languages ἕτερος heteros: other, another καινός kainos: new, fresh, renewed (not completely new) νέος neos νεώτερος neoteros: young, new (completely new) Matthew 6:6-8 Repeating a message, words, or sounds is useless; therefore, speaking in tongues in private prayer is unnecessary. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. 7 And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. 8 So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Mark 16:17 It is not a completely new language, but new to the speaker. These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new (kainos) tongues (glossa)... Acts 2:4-8 It is a different language, but it is understood by others. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other (heteros) tongues (glossa), as the Spirit was giving them utterance. 5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we each hear them in our own language (dialektos) to which we were born? Revelation 5:9 Glossa consistently refers to known human languages. And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue (glossa) and people and nation. Primary essential purpose: To communicate a message Isaiah 28:11-13 Refers to foreign languages of the Israel s captors. 11 Indeed, He will speak to this people through stammering lips and a foreign tongue, 12 He who said to them, Here is rest, give rest to the weary, and, Here is repose, but they would not listen. 13 So the word of Yehovah to them will be, Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line, a little here, a little there, that they may go and stumble backward, be broken, snared and taken captive. 2

Acts 2:11, 37-38 The gift is used to teach the unrepentant. 11...we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God. 37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? 38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ (Yehovah Yeshua ha Mashiyac) for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 14:21-22 The gift is used to teach the unbelievers. Paul quoted from Isaiah 28, where the tongues is human foreign language. 21 In the Law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to me, says the Lord. 22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. Eusibius Book V, Chapter 7:6 3 As also we hear that many brethren in the Church possess prophetic gifts, and speak, through the Spirit, with all kinds of tongues, and bring to light the secret things of men for their good, and declare the mysteries of God. Secondary non-essential purpose: To show reception of the Spirit Acts 10:45-47 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, 47 Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he? Many people have received the Spirit without speaking in tongues. John 20:21-22 The disciples received the Spirit before Pentecost. 21 So Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you. 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Acts 4 Being filled with the Spirit results in communicating the message of God with confidence, not necessarily in tongues. 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers and elders of the people... 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness. 3 Eusibius. Acts 9 Paul did not speak in tongues when he was first filled with the Spirit and baptized. 17...regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized; 19 and he took food and was strengthened. 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 Speaking in tongues is not for everyone; there are greater gifts. 28 And God has appointed in the assembly, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, kinds of tongues. 29 All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? 30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? 31 But earnestly desire the greater gifts. 1 Corinthians Everyone at Corinth was baptized in the Spirit but not everyone could speak in tongues. Prophecy (teaching) was more important. 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14:5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the assembly may receive edifying. True fruit of the Spirit: Repentance and obedience Matthew 7:15-23 False prophets will do miracles for Yeshua/Jesus and in His name, but not obey the Law. Good fruit is obedience to the Law. 15 Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? 17 So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 So then, you will know them by their fruits. 21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles? 23 And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from me, you who practice lawlessness. 1 Corinthians 12:28 Preaching and teaching is most important. Speaking in another language is least of all. And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, kinds of tongues. 4

Galatians 5:22-25 Many proofs of the Spirit exist, not just tongues. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Messiah Yeshua have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Ephesians 5:17-20 Being filled with the Spirit results in many things, not just speaking in tongues. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Yeshua Messiah to God, even the Father. Miraculous signs not always proof of salvation Deuteronomy 12:32-13:4 The Scriptures are superior to miracles, even if the miracles are genuinely true. 32 Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it. 1 If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, 2 and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them, 3 you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for Yehovah your God is testing you to find out if you love Yehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 You shall follow Yehovah your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. Matthew 24:24-25 Miracles do not always come from Yehovah. 24 For false Messiahs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. 25 Behold, I have told you in advance. Mark 16:17-18, 20 Miracles can show belief and can benefit others. 17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed. 5

Luke 16:29-31 The Scriptures are superior to miracles. 29 But Abraham said, They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them. 30 But he said, No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent! 31 But he said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead. John 4:48 Requiring a miracle shows lack of faith. So Yeshua said to him, Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe. John 20:29 It is better to have believed without needing a miracle. 29 Yeshua said to him, Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed. 2 Corinthians 12:12 Miracles helped to communicate a special message. The signs of a true apostle (messenger; one on a mission) were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles. 2 Thessalonians 2:8-9 The Beast will do miracles in the end. 8 Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; 9 that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders. Revelation 13:13-15 The False Prophet will do miracles in the end. 13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life. 15 And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed. Final comparison on the usage of tongues Assembly at Jerusalem Gift used for teaching others about God (Acts 2; 10:46-47) Righteous believers who kept the holy day of Pentecost in love with prayer (Acts 2:1, 42-47) Spiritually mature (Acts 2:42-47) Good example of speaking in tongues Assembly at Corinth Gift used for self or used for competition with others (1 Corinthians 14:4; 20-22) Unrighteous believers who kept the holy days of Unleavened Bread with an evil heart (1 Corinthians 5:7-8) Spiritually immature and unrighteous (1 Corinthians 3:1-3; 5:1-2) Bad example of speaking in tongues 6

Considerations Argument: A special Greek word, dorea, is used for the gift of the Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Reply: Dorea (δωρεά) is not a special or unique word used for the gift of the Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. It is used 56 times in the Bible to refer to anything free, such as money, possessions, and even working for an employer without pay. The special word for gift is charisma (χάρισμα), which occurs 17 times in the Bible. It always refers to a special gift, usually from God. It has for its root charis (χάρισ), which is where we get the English word grace. Therefore, the use of dorea (δωρεά) in receiving the Spirit is not a unique or special use, but a common use. Romans 5:15 This shows similar usages of dorea, charisma, and charis. But the free gift (charisma) is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace (charis) of God and the gift (dorea) by the grace (charis) of the one Man, Yeshua Messiah, abound to the many. Question: Is the kind of speaking in tongues done today something that nonreligious people and religious people of other faiths can do? Answer: Yes, they can; but they cannot speak in other human languages as in Acts 2. The details of this and a background of the issue of speaking in tongues at Corinth can be found at http://www.seeking4truth.com/tongues_corinth.html. 7
