Emmanuel College Chapel Lent Term 2018
Emmanuel College Chapel The Chapel exists as a centre for Christian life and worship. It stands in the centre of the College as a reminder of the spiritual dimension to life, whether we are conventionally religious or not. All members of the College and their friends are very welcome at its services, and are invited to share in its activities. Regular Services Sunday 11 am The Eucharist The Eucharist is the distinctive act of the Christian community. In it the scriptures are read and expounded and the central events of Jesus death and resurrection are re-presented in bread and wine. After the service members of the congregation go into Hall for brunch. Sunday 6 pm Evensong Evensong is service of words words sung, prayed, read and preached. It is the traditional service for evening and is led by the Choir. It includes a sermon, often given by a visitor to the College, designed to promote thoughtful reflection on the Christian Faith and the issues that it raises. The service is followed by drinks in C2, where there will be a chance to meet the preacher. Thursday 6 pm Sung Eucharist A meditative service led by the choir. There is a short sermon and the service lasts about 45 minutes, finishing before the end of informal hall. Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer Morning Prayer is said each weekday at 8.30am and Evening Prayer is said at 6pm (except on Tuesdays and Thursdays). Compline Compline is an atmospheric candlelit service for late evening. It will be sung twice this term on Wednesday evenings at 10pm.
The theme of the sermons at Evensong on Sundays this term is A Rough Guide to the Old Testament The Old Testament contains a bewildering variety of books, which together tell the story of the relationship between God and his people. Christians read this story as the context for the saving events of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Our preachers this term look at different books and issues in the Old Testament in order to cast light on some of its riches. Thursday 1st February, 6pm Corporate Eucharist for Candlemas The Feast of Candlemas, the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, marks the end of the forty days of celebration that follows Christmas and a turning towards the forty days of Lent that leads up to the commemoration of Christ s passion, death and resurrection. We celebrate with the candles that give the day its name and we follow the service with a buffet supper. Monday 5th February, 6.30 pm Joint Evensong with St John s Voices The Choir will be singing Evensong in St John s College Chapel, jointly with St John s Voices. Tuesday 13th February, 7 pm Shrove Tuesday Pancakes Pancakes are traditionally eaten on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent starts. Everyone is welcome to a selection of sweet and savoury pancakes.
Wednesday 14th February, 6 pm Ash Wednesday We mark the beginning of Lent with a solemn and reflective service and the imposition of ashes. The Choir will sing Byrd s Mass for Five Voices. Saturday 17th February, 5.30 pm Evensong at Ely Cathedral The Choir will be singing Evensong at Ely Cathedral. Collections this term will be given to USPG, United Society Partners in the Gospel who work with sister churches in the Anglican Communion to enliven faith, unlock potential and promote justice. Examples of projects in the fields of education, health and development can be found on the noticeboard in the Ante Chapel.
Fridays in Lent, beginning on 16th February Thinking about Food Feasting and Fasting, Poverty and Plenty We live in a world of contradictions and inequalities, and our attitudes to food show these up starkly. Through the traditional discipline of fasting, Lent presents us with an opportunity for reassessing our consumption, reminding ourselves of the inequalities that support our prosperity and pondering the value of things we usually take for granted. There are five Fridays between the beginning of Lent and the end of Full Term. On each of those we will have an hour of shared meditation and reflection on these issues in Chapel between 1 and 2 o clock. If you wish you may use the time as framework for fasting, or you may choose to eat lunch before of after. You may come for as much or as little of the time as you wish, and arrive and leave at any point. Everyone is invited, if they wish, to bring along a contribution to share a reflection on the subject of food and fasting, poverty and plenty or on related subjects. It can be something you have written or something by somebody else that has caught your imagination. Contributions should not be more than about 5 minutes long. For the rest of the time we will sit in companionable silence.
