Liturgy and music at the Cathedral March 2017 DRAFT
We are pleased to welcome you to Sheffield Cathedral. We hope that you feel at home in this community of Christians who worship at the heart of the Church of England Diocese of Sheffield. This Cathedral is a community gathered round Christ in prayer, committed to practical caring and living well with God. Its doors are open every day, and our work and worship continue through the year. It is a place for all people and you are very welcome. About music in the Cathedral Choral music forms a central part of and pivotal role in the worship at Sheffield Cathedral, with the choir of boys, girls, and adults singing regular services, as well as performing for a wide variety of special occasions in the Cathedral and beyond, including services, concerts and radio broadcasts. In addition to providing rich and plentiful music for the Cathedral s liturgy, membership of the choir offers an unparalleled experience and education for the young people involved. The music department always welcome enquiries about joining the Cathedral Choir please email musicians@sheffield-cathedral.org.uk This month, the choirs can be heard singing Bruckner s motet Christus factus est, Vierne s powerful Messe solennelle, including the moving Kyrie, and a newly introduced mass setting by Victoria, sometimes known as God s own composer. Organ music includes the stormy first movement of Vierne s third symphony, Bach s monumental Prelude and Fugue in B minor, and Tomkins A pavan for these distracted times.
