*Prayer of Confession (All) Eternal God, you sent Jesus Christ to rule over all things, and you call us to be servants in your kingdom. By your Spirit empower us to love the unloved and to minister to all in need. Forgive us when we seek our own protection and safety instead of following this Jesus in the ways of vulnerable love for others. Cure our selfishness and grant us a generous spirit. Then at the last bring us to your eternal realm where we may worship and adore you and be welcomed into your everlasting joy. Silence for Personal Confession Rev. Alan Dyer In affirming with the earliest Christians that Jesus is Lord, the Church confesses that He is its hope, and that the Church, as Christ s body, is bound to his authority and thus free to live in the lively, joyous reality of the grace of God. -Book of Order (PCUSA) In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen. *Assurance of Pardon *Gloria Patri 581 h.w. greatorex Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. WE PROCLAIM GOD S WORD Old Testament Lesson Psalm 46 Page 885 OT, Pew Bible Daryl Rabert Brenda Jones One: This is the Word of the Lord. ALL: Thanks be to God. The text of the anthem is based on a 17th century Latin prayer/poem of response to the work of Christ on the cross, translated into English by Rev. Edward Caswell (1814-1878) Anthem My Eternal King Chancel Choir Jane Marshall My God, I love Thee; not because I hope for heav n thereby, nor yet because who love Thee not must die eternally. Thou, O my Jesus, Thou didst me upon the cross embrace; for me didst bear the nails, the nails and spear, and manifold disgrace. Why, then why, O blessed Jesus Christ, should I not love Thee well? Not for the hope of winning heav n, or of escaping hell; Not with the hope of gaining aught, not seeking a reward; but as Thyself hast loved me, O ever-loving Lord! E en so I love Thee, and will love, and in Thy praise will sing; solely because Thou art my God, and my Eternal King. Sermon *Affirmation of Faith (All) *Hymn of Dedication The Lord Reigns WE GO FORTH TO SERVE 804 Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart! Rev. Bob Brearley A Declaration of Faith God created all the worlds that are and upholds and rules everything. We affirm that the universe exists by the power of God s Word and Spirit. God has chosen to give it reality out of the love we have come to know in Christ. God still works through the processes that shape and change the earth and the living things upon it. There is no event from which God is absent, and his ultimate purpose in all events is just and loving. That purpose embraces our choices and will surely be accomplished. The Creator works in all things toward the new creation that is promised in Christ. marion In Christ all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Christ God reconciles all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of the cross. In Christ s name, therefore, the Church is sent out to bear witness to the good news of reconciliation with God, with others, and with all creation. In Christ the Church receives its truth and appeal, its holiness, and its unity. -Book of Order (PCUSA) *Benediction Choral Response (599) Amen dresden Postlude Harvest Fanfare G. To Ponder Prayerfully In and Through Jesus The God who in and through Jesus reveals himself is human. And the human being who emerges in and through Jesus is divine. This is the specific characteristic of the Christian experience of God and human beings...it was in a man that the primitive church discovered God; and it was in God that we came to know the true nature and destiny of human beings.
