THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH AUGUST 13, 2017 THE TENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST BECOMING AWARE We are a part of God s good Creation, bound to it. God s saving work in the past, in the present, and we are assured, in the future is focused on the redemption of the whole of Creation. As disciples of Christ, now revealed as the Lord of all Creation, this is also the work we are called to witness to and participate in, for the sake of the world God so loves. from Salt of the Earth: A Christian Seasons Calendar (2016-2017)

LISTENING & PRAYING THE GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 16:13-18 One: The Gospel of Christ. Many: Thanks be to God. ANTHEM Come Build a Church Ken Medema God of Creation, Maker of all things. We gather here in this place to pray. We do invite you come now among us; come and build your church today. Come build a church with soul and spirit, come build a church of flesh and bone. We need no tower rising skyward; no house of wood or glass or stone. Come build a church with human frailty, come build a church of flesh and blood. Jesus shall be its sure foundation. It shall be built by the hand of God. Let us see the tongues of fire. Let us hear the great wind roar. Let us know the awe and wonder that we ve only glimpsed before. Let us feel the strength of passion, which can make us laugh and weep. Let us know this great awakening. For so long we ve been asleep. Let us know the love unceasing, which alone can loose the bounds. Reaching out across the chasms, bringing walls of hatred down. Let us taste the sweet communion, where the circle never ends. Hold us in the sweet connection, turning strangers into friends. Guide our feet in peaceful pathways. Teach us peace of heart and mind; peace with God and all God s children; till we leave our wars behind. Surely joy will come and find us like a breeze that cools the night; like the rain upon the desert; like a candle s gentle light. OUR KNOWN JOYS AND CONCERNS Stephanie Ford THE MORNING PRAYER THE EPISTLE LESSON II Corinthians 13:11-13 SERMON Benediction Marcus McFaul GIVING & RESPONDING OFFERTORY Be Thou My Vision John Rutter Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart, Be all else but naught to me, save that thou art; Be thou my best thought in the day and the night, Both walking and sleeping, thy presence my light. Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, Be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord; Be thou my Creator, and I thy true child; Be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight; Be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might; Be thou my soul's shelter, be thou my strong tower; O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. Riches I heed not, nor earth s empty praise; Be thou mine inheritance now and always; Be thou and thou only the first in my heart: O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art. Great God of heaven, thou heaven's bright Sun, O grant me its joys after vict'ry is won; Great heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

NUN DANKET * RECEPTION & INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS 341 PARTING & DEPARTING * LITANY OF FAREWELL FOR THE END OF THE INTERIM JOURNEY Linda Vaughn, Moderator Melinda Wilde, Diaconate Chair Melinda: A church family is constantly changing. Babies are born into our community, and loved ones come to the end of their lives in our embrace. Individuals and families come and go in our church life. It is important and right that we recognize these times of passage, of endings and beginnings. Today we say farewell to Pastor Marcus, whose time as our Intentional Interim Pastor has come to an end. Pastor: I thank Binkley Church, its members and friends, for the love, kindness, and support shown me these last 32 months. I thank you for accepting my leadership. I recall with joy the many things we have been able to accomplish together and with sadness the things we were not able to do. I ask your understanding and forgiveness for the mistakes I made and for the times I let you down. Congregation: We receive your thankfulness, and we offer our forgiveness for any failures. We accept that you now leave us to minister elsewhere. Your influence on us will not leave us, even though you depart from us. We express gratitude for your time among us and ask your forgiveness for our shortcomings. Linda: Do you, the members and friends of Binkley Church, now release Pastor Marcus from the duties of Intentional Interim Pastor? Congregation: We do, with the help of God. Linda: Do you, Pastor Marcus, release Binkley Church from turning to you and depending on you as Intentional Interim Pastor? Pastor: I do, with the help of God. Melinda: Do you offer your encouragement for the continued ministry here at Binkley Church?

Pastor: I do, with the help of God. Linda: Let us pray together, saying: All: God, whose everlasting love for all that is trustworthy, help each of us to trust the future, which rests in your care. During our time together, we have experienced laughter and tears, hopes and disappointments. Guide us as we carry these cherished memories with us in new directions until the time when we are completely one with you and one another. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen. Melinda & Go now, Pastor Marcus, surrounded by our love and led by the Linda: promises of God, the presence of Jesus Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Used by permission of the Interim Ministry Network, Baltimore, Maryland * BLESSING & BENEDICTION May the Lord Bless You and Keep You; May the Lord Make His Face to Shine Upon You And Be Gracious Unto You. May God Give You the Grace Not to Sell Yourself Short, Grace to Risk Something Big For Something Good, Grace to Remember that The World is Now Too Dangerous for Anything but Truth, and Too Small for Anything but Love. So May God Take Your Minds and Think Through Them; May God Take Your Lips and Speak Through Them; and May God Take Your Hearts and Set Them on Fire; Through Creator and Christ and the Holy Spirit, Amen. * RESPONSE TO THE BENEDICTION God Be In My Head John Rutter God be in my head and in my understanding. God be in mine eyes and in my looking. God be in my mouth and in my speaking. God be in mine heart and in my thinking. God be at my end and in my departing. VOLUNTARY Trumpet Voluntary John Stanley Upon leaving the Sanctuary, please be mindful of those choosing to use the Voluntary as their final act of worship.

APPLICATIONS FOR OUTREACH PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS FOR 2018 ARE NOW AVAILABLE: As we have done in the past, the Board of Outreach is asking the congregation to nominate programs and projects for funding as part of our outreach efforts. We are asking applicants to consider asking for funds not only for institutions but also for outreach (service) projects in which the entire congregation can participate. The application form can be found in your Friday Update and paper copies are also available in the narthex. We are particularly interested in nominations that are supported by more than one Binkley member, so please be sure and let us know if more than one person is supporting the nomination. Applications must be submitted by Friday, September 8th, but we urge you to get them in earlier so that we can start our work as soon as possible. BINKLEY ART SHOW Oct. 14, Fellowship Hall: Mark October 14, 2017 on your calendar for the Binkley Members and Friends Fall Art Show. Now is the time to get your masterpieces ready for the show.
