GOD Our Identity in Christ 5 Our Redemption Teacher: Reverend Tom Knupp Our Redemption in Christ is our identification as the redeemed. Introduction Our heavenly Father brought us to Himself by His Son, Jesus Christ - We are part of His family for eternity Two elements to redemption: 1. Payment 2. Release Past Payment and Release Plan God authored plan before the foundation of world Present Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption Future Payment payed, release awaited (release from bondage of corruption) Redeemed as God s very own now and forever Book of Ruth Jesus Christ as our kinsman redeemer (God s Plan, Ruth 1:6)) Ephesians our redemption accomplished and future Ephesians Chapter 1 to plan redemption, God had to first desire it: Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will. (starts with in love of verse 4) Ephesians 1:4 from the Amplified Bible Even as [in His love] He chose us [actually picked us out for Himself as his own] in Christ before the foundation of the world. That we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love. God redeemed us in love, intensely desired it We are born again as His sons and are legally adopted also. He wanted us as His heirs. hueiothesia adoption or placement as sons, sonship - The basis on which we have rights as God s sons - Sons adopted and legally made heirs irrevocable Legal grounds natural birth son could be disowned - Adoption change of family, name, home, and capacity to inherit 1

According to His good pleasure God marked us out for Himself Galatians 4:3-5 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. adoption = huiothison placement as sons God is the author or initiator of our salvation. The agent of our salvation is God s Son Jesus Christ as our kinsman redeemer Hosea 2:23 And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, thou art my God. (English Standard Version more accurate) Romans 9:25 As he saith also in Osee (Hosea), I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. (reference to Hosea 2:23) 9:26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. the children of the living God Now God says not only are we His people but we are the children of the living God Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. a peculiar people Peculiar one s own property (from the Latin) a people for God s acquisition I Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: English Standard Version: a people for His (God s) own possession 2

2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. Point reinforced went from not my people to my people. This is a reference by Peter to Hosea 2:23. The Past Ruth chapter 1 (verses 1-6, 14-18 were read) Ruth basically is asks to be adopted. She needs a kinsman to redeemer her. Reading the book of Ruth, presented many customs and manners of Judeans at that time in history. These included the gleaning in the fields, threshing floor, paying off someones dept, adopting a person into a family, and taking a widow for a wife. Ruth 2:1 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech: and his name was Boaz. Boaz was a kinsman of Ruth s husband Next of kin had the right to buy back deceased relative s property and take his wife 2:2-3 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter. And she went and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech. hap Figure of Speech part of God s plan Boaz part of family, could be kinsman redeemer 2:11 And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore. Had taken the trouble to learn about Ruth, impressed by her dedication 2:12-13, 20 The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust. Then she said, Let me find favor in thy sight, my lord: for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens. And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the Lord, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen. 3

Kinsman goel kinsman redeemer Threshing floor in high place also used as meeting place for discussion, contracts, negotiations Ruth followed specific known protocol for redemption Ruth 3:8-11 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman. And he said, Blessed be thou of the Lord, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, insamuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, fear not: I will do to thee all that thou requires: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman. Skirt = mantle Spreading of mantle over someone represents redemption, protection Lying at feet represents complete surrender Request permissible and appropriate because Boaz was a qualified redeemer Ruth 3:12-4:13, 17 were read Boaz in Christ-line Now, payment and release have been accomplished The Present Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Pivotal verse capturing the truth of our redemption now redeem to demand back one s property after payment of ransom (Jesus Christ s blood and what it accomplished) Ransom paid released from penalty of sins aphesis forgiveness (after salvation to pardon) or remission (wiping out at salvation) - In this verse, refers to remission Romans 8:15 4

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Sonship spirit (huiothesia) 8:16-17 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Still await the release in the future when take full inheritance (trade-in, full new body) The Future Ephesians 1:14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. Obtained inheritance Galatians 4:6-7 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. No more servant but son heir Deuteronomy 32:9 For the Lord s portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. God s portion is His people We are God s property Ephesians 1:14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. Earnest = token Romans 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. Waiting for adoption (sonship), redemption to be fully accomplished I Corinthians 6:20 5

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God s. Romans 15:6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Glorify God response to being redeemed Redeemed for something living for Him Philippians 3:9-12 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of (from) God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made confirmable unto his death: If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. ESV verse 12: Christ Jesus made me His (God s) own We are God s very own now and forever. Heart: Ruth 1:16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and here thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God. 6
