Ruth 2016 4B Tday we re finishing ur study f Ruth, by returning t ur first stry, t Baz pursuing rest fr Ruth and Nami Last week we studied Baz s brilliant strategy t cmpel the kinsmanredeemer-in-waiting t either cmmit r relinquish his rle This man std between Baz and Nami s family This man was a clser relative, s he had t decline t redeem befre Baz was permitted t step int the gap Baz knew that it wuldn t be easy t get this guy n recrd The relative had gd reasns t delay a decisin as we learned last week But Baz had a plan t gain a decisin ne way r anther just as he prmised Ruth He dangled the prspect f receiving Nami s land in frnt f the man This man was allwed first right t purchase this land shuld Nami need t sell Obtaining land was a nce-in-a-lifetime pprtunity in that day All the land f Israel had been divided up and assigned t tribes and families There was literally n land available in Israel, and the Law set limits n hw lng land culd be pssessed utside the family Land sld utside the family had t be returned t the family within 50 years r less The pprtunity t acquire land permanently seemed t gd t be true t this relative, s he jumped at the pprtunity He said he wuld gladly redeem the land The man assumed Nami s family was n the verge f disappearing 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 2 f 17 Therefre he assumed the land wuld remain in his hands frever and becme part f his wn inheritance But it was t gd t be true After the relative said he wuld redeem the land, Baz added that Nami had a daughter-in-law wh required redeeming Suddenly, the man s hpes faded as did his cmmitment He was willing t pay the price f redemptin s lng as it prfited him But when there was a real, persnal cst invlved, well then he was n lnger able t pay such a steep price S he said I cannt redeem Nami s land r Ruth lest he risk his inheritance The relative spke his wrds in frnt f ten witnesses, wh Baz assembled t ensure the matter was fficial These elders std by silently but their impact was felt Their watchful eyes ensured what was dne was binding n all cncerned, s nw the matter was finished S frm there, let s prceed frward in the stry Ruth 4:7 Nw this was the custm in frmer times in Israel cncerning the redemptin and the exchange f land t cnfirm any matter: a man remved his sandal and gave it t anther; and this was the manner f attestatin in Israel. Ruth 4:8 S the clsest relative said t Baz, Buy it fr yurself. And he remved his sandal. Ruth 4:9 Then Baz said t the elders and all the peple, Yu are witnesses tday that I have bught frm the hand f Nami all that belnged t Elimelech and all that belnged t Chilin and Mahln. Ruth 4:10 Mrever, I have acquired Ruth the Mabitess, the widw f Mahln, t be my wife in rder t raise up the name f the deceased n his inheritance, s that the name f the deceased will nt be cut ff frm his brthers r frm the curt f his birth place; yu are witnesses tday. As Samuel explains, there was a custm in the days f the judges fr hw matters f this kind were fficially cncluded 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 3 f 17 Since there was n king nr a judge n every crner, lcal tribal leaders generally enfrced the rule f law in their twns In this day the peple adpted a custm fr hw a man refused his right as redeemer The custm was fr a man t remve a sandal and give it t the ne wh wuld act as redeemer in his place This custm finds its rigins in the Law Deut. 25:8 Then the elders f his city shall summn him and speak t him. And if he persists and says, I d nt desire t take her, Deut. 25:9 then his brther s wife shall cme t him in the sight f the elders, and pull his sandal ff his ft and spit in his face; and she shall declare, Thus it is dne t the man wh des nt build up his brther s huse. Deut. 25:10 In Israel his name shall be called, The huse f him whse sandal is remved. The Law required that the wman wh wasn t redeemed shuld be the ne t pull ff the sandal Furthermre, she spit in the man s face fr refusing t redeem her Spitting at anther was a sign f disgust And having a wman take these actins was particularly humiliating fr a man in that day S the Law intended that the ne wh wuldn t keep the law f redemptin wuld be publicly shamed But Samuel says in this day, a time when peple did what was right in their wn eyes, the custm was practiced differently than the law expected Instead f the wman shaming the man, the traditin had becme that the discredited redeemer simply remved his wn sandal and gave it up t the new redeemer By giving up just ne sandal, the discredited redeemer wuld have been unable t walk prperly as he left the prceedings His lpsided stride wuld have drawn attentin t his missing sandal and wuld cmmunicated his shameful refusal t redeem 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 4 f 17 Mrever, the new redeemer pssessed physical prf that he had gained the redemptin right frm the ther man Giving up his ftwear t the new redeemer created tw pwerful symblic messages First, standing n land was a way f expressing wnership ver it We remember hw Gd tld Abraham t walk thrughut Canaan t survey the land that the Lrd had given t him Therefre, remving a sandal was a symblic way f relinquishing the right t land And in this case, that s what s happened...the relative gave up his claim t redeem Nami s land as he says in v.6 Even mre pwerfully, taking pssessin f anther s sandal symblized walking in the ftsteps f the ther Baz was taking the place f the ther man, walking the path that the ther relative shuld have walked had he be able t keep the Law Since the relative culdn t meet the terms f the Law, he gave up his ftwear t Baz wh wuld keep the law in his place S Baz stepped int the man s place, as if wearing his shes, t marry Ruth Next, Baz declares t the witnesses that he has rightfully assumed the place f the ther The elders and the crwd gathered fr this meeting frmed the witnesses If called upn, they culd truthfully testify that the matter was settled accrding t Law They culd reprt that the clser relative was disqualified frm redeeming and failed t meet the Law And they culd attest that Baz met all qualificatins t assume the redeemer rle, having perfrmed the Law in the relative s place These witnesses respnd with much mre than merely an affirmatin 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 5 f 17 They heap praise upn Baz fr his actins Ruth 4:11 All the peple wh were in the curt, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. May the Lrd make the wman wh is cming int yur hme like Rachel and Leah, bth f whm built the huse f Israel; and may yu achieve wealth in Ephrathah and becme famus in Bethlehem. Ruth 4:12 Mrever, may yur huse be like the huse f Perez whm Tamar bre t Judah, thrugh the ffspring which the Lrd will give yu by this yung wman. First, the peple declare they are witnesses, and then they ask that the Lrd wuld bless this wman wuld be like Rachel and Leah Rachel and Leah were Jacb s wives, and each wife prduced many children, including a ttal f 12 sns These twelve sns eventually gave rise t the tribes f Israel And in like manner, the peple ask the Lrd t bless Baz with a hst f descendants Baz was bligated t raise up the first brn sn as if it belnged t Nami s family S what if this were the nly sn Baz and Ruth every prduced? It culd mean that Baz wuld be withut an heir. S the peple ask the Lrd t bless Baz well beynd this first sn by giving him many sns Furthermre, they ask that Baz might pssess great wealth fr having placed his persnal inheritance at risk in this way They say in Ephrathah, which is just anther name fr Bethlehem Like the clser relative, Baz will have t pay a price t btain the land and the wman, and that wealth will leave his estate and may nt return S the peple ask the Lrd t cmpensate Baz fr his mercy and kindness Finally, they ask that Baz s name wuld be made great fr this sacrifice Specifically, they declare may he be a famus sn f Bethlehem 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 6 f 17 Thrughut future generatins, peple will assciate Baz s name with the twn f Bethlehem They declare that the name f their sn will be famus The Hebrew wrd in v.11 is qara which means called upn r declared S say the name Baz will be decalred in Bethlehem Then the crwd prclaims in v.12 that Baz s ffspring fr Ruth shuld be like Perez, wh Tamar bre t Judah The crwd must have recgnized the many parallels between this stry and the stry in Gen 38 Ruth and Tamar were bth Gentiles wh married int Israel Bth were widws withut children and bth were redeemed Bth married cnsiderably lder husbands But bth had t resrt t creative methds t btain what they rightfully deserved under law Tamar eventually bre a sn, Perez, wh inherited the seed line f Judah Perez became the leading family within the tribe f Judah And s nw the crwd requests may the sn f Baz and Ruth have the blessing f cntinuing the seed prmise line als This suggests that the crwd knew that Baz carried the seed prmise in his family line having descended frm Perez What we re learning is that the first brn sn t Baz is destined t carry the seed prmise, that is be in the family line t Messiah He wuld legally be Nami s sn and inherit the wealth f Elimelech, Nami s husband But the seed prmise came thrugh Baz and wuld remain n his first brn regardless f hw the law viewed custdy S Nami will be the mther f a child that came by ne father but raised as if frm anther father And ultimately, that sn will lead t a Savir fr her natin 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 7 f 17 Then as prmised, Baz takes Ruth as wife and sn by the grace f Gd the cuple bears a sn Ruth 4:13 S Baz tk Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in t her. And the Lrd enabled her t cnceive, and she gave birth t a sn. Ruth 4:14 Then the wmen said t Nami, Blessed is the Lrd wh has nt left yu withut a redeemer tday, and may his name becme famus in Israel. Ruth 4:15 May he als be t yu a restrer f life and a sustainer f yur ld age; fr yur daughter-in-law, wh lves yu and is better t yu than seven sns, has given birth t him. Ruth 4:16 Then Nami tk the child and laid him in her lap, and became his nurse. Ruth 4:17 The neighbr wmen gave him a name, saying, A sn has been brn t Nami! S they named him Obed. He is the father f Jesse, the father f David. Nami s dreams have cme true She has cme thrugh a dark time, a time f hpelessness And she returned t her land brken and bitter Yet the prspect f a redeemer gave her hpe Nw tday her hpe has been realized as she receives a sn After the child s birth, Nami becmes the child s caretaker (nt a wet nurse) Why des Ruth give this child t Nami? Remember, under the Law the redeemer was respnsible fr prviding an heir t the family wh was missing an heir Elimelech and his sns died, s his family needs the heir Nw that Ruth has married Baz, she has becme a part f Baz s family That leaves Nami as the last living member f Elimelech s family S when Baz, wh is Nami redeemer, brings a sn int the wrld, that sn is raised as if he were the sn f Elimelech Therefre, Nami receives the sn as if it is her sn She will raise him as a sn f Elimelech 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 8 f 17 But as I said, this sn still receives the seed prmise frm Baz He may be legally part f Nami s family but he carries th eline f Messiah frm Baz The wmen f the twn rejice wth Nami They declare that the name f this sn will be famus Again, this is the Hebrew wrd in qara meaning declared r called upn S this sn will be declared and called upn in Bethlehem And they say this child will be a restrer f life and a sustainer fr Nami Irnically, because f Nami Ruth cane t knw her Jewish redeemer and husband And nw the tables are turned, as Ruth becmes the ne t make pssible Nami receiving her wn deliverer Interestingly, the parents d nt name their child. Instead, a neighbr wman gave the child a name, Obed His name means servant r ne wh serves The neighbr gave the child this name t recgnize Nami s caring fr Ruth s child But f curse we see a greater parallel In fact, I m guessing yu ve been seeing many parallels thrughut tday s lessn Ging back int last week, we have a lt f unpacking t d in explaining the secnd stry f chapter 4 And in this chapter, the secnd stry isn t ne f End Times as much It s a stry f histry Let s start back with Baz in the gate with his clsest relative at the beginning f the chapter The easiest piece f this puzzle is Baz himself 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 9 f 17 Everyne knws this man is a picture f Jesus Christ acting as ur Redeemer And we are like Ruth, the Gentile Bride f Christ, in need f redemptin In Ruth s case, she needed redemptin frm widwhd, while we needed redemptin frm smething far mre serius and devastating As sinners we incurred a life-threatening debt befre Gd The Bible says that all peple cme int the wrld as sinners Rm. 3:23 fr all have sinned and fall shrt f the glry f Gd, And ur sin nature causes us t then live in ways that are cntrary t Gd s law Our cntrary nature and the behavir it prduces is called sin and sin is a debt befre Gd Because we have this debt befre Gd, we need t pay that debt But this isn t an easy debt t pay The payment must be equal t the debt And the debt we we is ur life Rm. 6:23 Fr the wages f sin is death, but the free gift f Gd is eternal life in Christ Jesus ur Lrd. S we need smene t bail us ut f ur debt, t redeem us, t pay a ransm t free us frm ur sentence f eternal death Baz pictures Christ, ur Redeemer, Wh willingly paid the price fr ur sin debt befre Gd Like Baz ging befre the elders and the peple in the gate, Christ entered int a legal transactin He made a payment fr ur debt, which the Bible calls prpitiatin 1Jhn 4:10 In this is lve, nt that we lved Gd, but that He lved us and sent His Sn t be the prpitiatin fr ur sins. 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 10 f 17 By ur redeemer s payment, we were justified, which means we were acquitted f ur guilt and btained peace with Gd Rm. 5:1 Therefre, having been justified by faith, we have peace with Gd thrugh ur Lrd Jesus Christ, Christ stepped int the gap t assume the Redeemer rle in place f anther wh culdn t just as Baz did Like Baz, Christ first assembled ten witnesses In Baz s day, these men represented the authrity f the peple, wh culd testify cncerning right and wrng Ntice the 10 elders didn t frce anyne t d anything They just std by silently giving witness t what ught t happen in this situatin Where d we find ten witnesses cncerning right and wrng in ur stry with Christ? We find them in the Law Because befre Jesus culd redeem us, He had t meet the terms f the Law And specifically, he had t satisfy the scrutiny f the Ten Cmmandments The Law can t cmpel anyne t d gd, as Paul says Rather, it stands witness silently cndemning su as we fail t live accrding t its requirements Baz withstd the scrutiny f his ten witnesses, having satisfied all that the law required cncerning Nami s family Just as Christ als met all the requirements f the Law by living a perfect, sinless life The Ten Cmmandments testified t Christ s righteusness, as scripture says 1Jhn 3:5 Yu knw that He appeared in rder t take away sins; and in Him there is n sin. Like Baz, Christ was a man wh fulfilled the Law 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 11 f 17 But there was anther man present wh culdn t fulfill the law s requirements This ther man was a clse relative f Baz But he was unable t redeem Nami s family He culdn t pay the price And s under the scrutiny f the ten elders, he was frced t hand his she t Jesus Thus Baz culd walk in his place, ding what he culdn t d Wh des this clse relative picture? He pictures Adam, and ultimately everyne wh cmes frm Adam In effect, that clser relative is yu and me We are related t Christ at least in bld, because Jesus tk n flesh t be ur representative Heb. 2:14 Therefre, since the children share in flesh and bld, He Himself likewise als partk f the same, that thrugh death He might render pwerless him wh had the pwer f death, that is, the devil, Thugh Jesus was Gd, He tk n flesh s He culd walk in ur shes, taking ur place n the crss Phil. 2:5 Have this attitude in yurselves which was als in Christ Jesus, Phil. 2:6 wh, althugh He existed in the frm f Gd, did nt regard equality with Gd a thing t be grasped, Phil. 2:7 but emptied Himself, taking the frm f a bnd-servant, and being made in the likeness f men. Phil. 2:8 Being fund in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becming bedient t the pint f death, even death n a crss. Baz and his relative pictures Christ and mankind But like that relative, we re mre clsely related than Christ We share the sin nature f thse Christ redeems, which makes us a clser relative S smehw we must mve ut f the way s Christ can redeem 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 12 f 17 We have t give Christ ur she, s He can step int ur place and walk where we can t g He must redeem us since we can t redeem urselves He culd pay the price fr ur sins, a price we culdn t pay The price was t great We dn t have the perfect life that the Law requires Thse ten witnesses, the Ten Cmmandments, stand by silently cndemning us, testifying against us, expsing ur sins We have t give ur she t Christ by faith, s He can walk in ur place, paying ur price As Baz paid that debt, the man wh culdn t pay was ut t shame as ne unable t meet the law And in a sense, that s what Christ did fr us He tk ur place, paying ur price, and in the prcess relieved us f the debt which shamed us He tk ur shame n the crss, scripture says Cl. 2:13 When yu were dead in yur transgressins and the uncircumcisin f yur flesh, He made yu alive tgether with Him, having frgiven us all ur transgressins, Cl. 2:14 having canceled ut the certificate f debt cnsisting f decrees against us, which was hstile t us; and He has taken it ut f the way, having nailed it t the crss. Heb. 12:2 fixing ur eyes n Jesus, the authr and perfecter f faith, wh fr the jy set befre Him endured the crss, despising the shame, and has sat dwn at the right hand f the thrne f Gd. Lastly, we remember that Baz redeemed nt nly Ruth but als Nami s land Just as Christ is Redeemer f bth mankind and all Creatin Cl. 1:19 Fr it was the Father s gd pleasure fr all the fullness t dwell in Him, Cl. 1:20 and thrugh Him t recncile all things t Himself, having made peace thrugh the bld f His crss; thrugh Him, I say, whether things n earth r things in heaven. 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 13 f 17 Next, we see that nce Baz became the redeemer, he received great adratin and he inherited all that that belnged t Elimelech, accrding t v.9 Remember that the name Elimelech means Gd is King and his character in the stry represents Gd the Father Scripture calls Gd the Father Husband t Israel, just as Elimelech is the husband f Nami And nw Baz has received everything that was Elimelech s S here again we see a picture f Christ, as scripture teaches Phil. 2:9 Fr this reasn als, Gd highly exalted Him, and bestwed n Him the name which is abve every name, Phil. 2:10 s that at the name f Jesus every knee will bw, f thse wh are in heaven and n earth and under the earth, Phil. 2:11 and that every tngue will cnfess that Jesus Christ is Lrd, t the glry f Gd the Father. And Hebrews says that Jesus was the heir f all things Heb. 1:1 Gd, after He spke lng ag t the fathers in the prphets in many prtins and in many ways, Heb. 1:2 in these last days has spken t us in His Sn, whm He appinted heir f all things, thrugh whm als He made the wrld. Jesus received the Father s inheritance as a result f His service f redemptin And He is prepared t share His inheritance with His Bride And Baz s act f mercy led t many descendants and a great name in Bethlehem Just as Jesus wrk n the crss has resulted in many sns and daughters f faith in the family f Gd Furthermre, the name f Jesus is synnymus with Bethlehem itself Why did Baz d all this? T give Ruth and Nami rest, t give them the permanent security and peace they lnged fr..a Sabbath rest Fr Ruth, the rest came in the frm f a marriage 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 14 f 17 Just as ur Sabbath rest is fund in faith in Jesus Christ We are the Bride Wh has fund ur Grm in Christ Never again will we wrk fr ur righteusness Fr we have btained it in a Redeemer Wh cvered us in His rbe f righteusness But Nami, Israel, still needs a redeemer Irnically, Israel is the ne that brught us, the Gentile Church, t ur Redeemer thrugh the cvenants and the scriptures Israel brught the Messiah int the wrld Yet tday Israel stands in widwhd But in a day t cme, the natin will receive that same child they rejected s lng ag The same Israel wh made pssible ur pprtunity t knw the Messiah will ne day receive that same Messiah Just as Nami led Ruth t Baz, and then ne day Ruth gave Nami the deliverer she needed Likewise, we have Christ because f Israel Scripture says in a future day the natin f Israel will receive the same child they rejected earlier Zech. 12:9 And in that day I will set abut t destry all the natins that cme against Jerusalem. Zech. 12:10 I will pur ut n the huse f David and n the inhabitants f Jerusalem, the Spirit f grace and f supplicatin, s that they will lk n Me whm they have pierced; and they will murn fr Him, as ne murns fr an nly sn, and they will weep bitterly ver Him like the bitter weeping ver a firstbrn. Nami s receiving a child t redeem her is a picture f hw Israel cmes t understand that the Christ child was their Messiah They will weep ver this firstbrn sn upn recgnizing the errr f their frefathers They will understand they pierced their Messiah n the crss but by that recgnitin, they cme t find rest 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 15 f 17 Rm. 11:12 Nw if their transgressin is riches fr the wrld and their failure is riches fr the Gentiles, hw much mre will their fulfillment be! Rm. 11:13 But I am speaking t yu wh are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apstle f Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, Rm. 11:14 if smehw I might mve t jealusy my fellw cuntrymen and save sme f them. Rm. 11:15 Fr if their rejectin is the recnciliatin f the wrld, what will their acceptance be but life frm the dead? Rm. 11:30 Fr just as yu nce were disbedient t Gd, but nw have been shwn mercy because f their disbedience, Rm. 11:31 s these als nw have been disbedient, that because f the mercy shwn t yu they als may nw be shwn mercy. Rm. 11:32 Fr Gd has shut up all in disbedience s that He may shw mercy t all. The stry ends with a brief genealgy Ruth 4:18 Nw these are the generatins f Perez: t Perez was brn Hezrn, Ruth 4:19 and t Hezrn was brn Ram, and t Ram, Amminadab, Ruth 4:20 and t Amminadab was brn Nahshn, and t Nahshn, Salmn, Ruth 4:21 and t Salmn was brn Baz, and t Baz, Obed, Ruth 4:22 and t Obed was brn Jesse, and t Jesse, David. Samuel cnnects the descendant f Judah and Tamar t David Remember, this was written by Samuel as the mnarchy f Saul was fading and David was in waiting fr the thrne S the genealgy stands t testify t the line f the seed prmise and f the mnarchy David, nt Saul, was in the line f Judah, the tribe f kings And the Messiah wuld cme thrugh David s line by way f Baz and Ruth In that way Samuel makes a scriptural case fr the huse f David having pririty ver the Huse f Saul Clearly, this was Gd s plan But there is anther reasn we have this genealgy, ne that testifies t Gd s grace t the Gentiles 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 16 f 17 Perez was the sn f Judah and Tamar Tamar was Judah s daughter-in-law, and she tricked him int impregnating her by psing as a prstitute n the side f the rad Thugh Tamar had right t be redeemed as a widw, Judah refused t let her wed his final sn S Tamar felt frced t take this step The prduct f that unin was Perez, wh was a child f illegitimate birth (a bastard sn) There is a law regarding such children Deut. 23:2 N ne f illegitimate birth shall enter the assembly f the Lrd; nne f his descendants, even t the tenth generatin, shall enter the assembly f the Lrd. The law says that such a persn cannt enter the assembly nr can the next nine generatins f descendants T nt enter the assembly means t be barred frm the religius life f Israel They cannt enter the temple nr participate in the feasts That is the curse f the Law We re nt sure if this law was fllwed in the case f Perez s family But we can be sure that the Lrd didn t lse track He wuld have cunted ut the ten generatins Interesting, the very next verse in Deut 23 is ne we read at the beginning f ur study Deut. 23:3 N Ammnite r Mabite shall enter the assembly f the Lrd; nne f their descendants, even t the tenth generatin, shall ever enter the assembly f the Lrd, The Law placed the same restrictin n a Mabite wh jined t the peple f Israel That persn was als barred frm participating in the assembling f Israel fr ten generatins 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Ruth 2016 4B 17 f 17 Ruth was a Mabite, s she wuld have fallen under this restrictin But as ur stry ends, we find a list f exactly ten names ending in David Ten being the number f testimny And the curse f Perez s line ending with David, anther picture f Christ S we have Baz, the man wh pictures Christ n the crss, paying the price, taking the curse f a Mabite upn himself And we see David, a picture f Christ risen and ruling, remving the curse In ne we see the first cming f Christ In the ther, we see the secnd cming f Christ I hpe this study has pened yur eyes t the pwer f the Gd we serve Truly he has authred histry, including the lives f thse in ur stry And every mve He makes cmmunicates His lve fr us in HIs wrd When yu see the puzzle cming tgether, yu recgnize this was written by Gd And yu cme t understand the lengths He has gne t redeem us 2016 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal (www.versebyverseministry.rg) May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.
