What makes a church effective? What makes a church grow in a healthy way? How can a church have a significant impact for Jesus Christ in this world? These are important questions as we look to the future of ministry in the Silvis and East Moline areas. How does effective ministry begin? I believe it begins, and is sustained by, prayer! For years I have followed the development of a church in Muncie, Indiana. The church building began as a car dealership. Now the building houses the ministries of Union Chapel United Methodist Church a church that grew from 70 to over 1500 in average attendance. The pastor of Union Chapel is Gregg Parris. Gregg tells an incredible story about the growth of Union Chapel. From the Pastor: Rev. Roger Perry Gregg and his wife, Beth, had an opportunity to stay in the Louisville, Kentucky, area but felt a strong sense of God s call back to a rural church in the middle of Indiana. They prayed that they would have the strength to give God their best. Gregg was sent to be the pastor to two small country churches in the middle of the Indiana cornfields. Shortly after Gregg began his ministry in those two small churches, three little old ladies by the names of Opal, Gladys and Flowsie came to speak to their new pastor. Actually, Opal spoke for the three of them when she said, Pastor, the three of us want you to know that we have been meeting together on a fairly regular basis for the past thirty years, praying that God would send revival to our church. And we just want you to know that we are praying for you! Gregg responded by saying, That s nice. Thank you. But as he looks back on it in retrospect, he realizes that that was a major key to everything else that was to happen. Gregg Parris states, A lot of people either fix blame or credit to me for what has happened to Union Chapel in the last twenty years. But I submit to you it was all Opal, Gladys and Flowsie s fault! A few months later revival did come to the Union Chapel and the first person to commit his life to Jesus as Savior and Lord was Archie Lee Wilson Opal s husband! At the next Sunday service, 140 people showed up and 21 people gave their life to Jesus Christ! They quickly ran out of room in the small church and had to hold their services elsewhere. Finally the car dealership building on the north edge of Muncie came up for sale and they bought it. They now have an incredible ministry and have added on to the building, more than doubling the original size. Their youth program reaches over 500 youth each week! Now, it is important to remember that Gregg was appointed to two small churches. Union Chapel took off in growth. The other church did not grow. Why? Gregg Parris explains it this way: I preached the same sermon in both churches for two solid years with the same amount of A P R I L 2 0 1 6 conviction, prayerfulness, and preparation. One church stayed as flat as it could be and the other church experienced revival. Now that reality reminds me how little I had to do with it. But there were people praying, and praying. I was willing to lead and then we had people that were willing to follow, and willing to go and willing to risk. What an incredible story! I believe that God has given us a similar route to take. I firmly believe that God is calling the people of Silvis and East Moline to unite to become a great multi-site church for God, built on the Great Commission and the Great Commandment of Jesus Christ. But of greatest need and importance is for people to pray that God will move in a mighty way here. Join me in praying daily that God will bring a major revival and that Christ will be made famous in the Quad Cities area. Gather with others and begin concerts of prayer, recognizing that God works through the prayers of His people. Remember that when God is about to do a mighty work, He sets His people to pray. Jesus said, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest Matthew 9:37-38. We can do nothing of importance for the kingdom of God until we first pray and seek God s mighty hand. In Christ s Greater Love, Roger Perry

P A G E 2 Multisite All Church Conference April 10 Two Church Conferences (one for Christ Church and one for Silvis Church) have been scheduled for Sunday, April 10th at 1:00pm. The purpose of these church conferences is to decide whether we, as both churches, desire to become one church in two locations. Our District Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Sylvester Weatherall, will conduct each meeting. All full members may vote. Welcome Shaun Easton!!! Shaun Easton is Christ Church s new Saturday night worship leader and youth director. He is very excited to be a part of the Christ Church family! Shaun is originally from Jefferson, Ohio, near Cleveland. He and his wife, Camille, have been in ministry together for over 20 years, traveling the country and ministering to the spiritual needs of those on the outskirts of society. Because of their experience, they both developed a passion and a calling to serve and love the homeless population of our country through word, music, and prayer. Their passion, Kaile Reign Ministries, strives to serve and love the last, the lost and the least of our society. Shaun has served as a worship leader and a youth director at Crossroads Community Church, Madison; First United Methodist Church, Geneseo; St. John s Lutheran Church, Bloomington, IL; and at Stone s Throw Church in Middletown, Delaware. Shaun and Camille have two daughters; Phia, age 14 and Anah, age 9. Shaun and his family felt called by God to come back to the Quad Cities area, where they have many relationships and friendships. They have a strong desire to reach people for Jesus Christ. Shaun s vison for Christ Church s youth group is mission focused. He strives to provide a safe and healthy environment where teens can come and develop a relationship with Jesus; and then take that love out into the community to serve and to connect Jesus with His word through service, mercy and grace. Farewell Celebration for Michele DeLathower Please join the celebration in saying farewell and good luck to Michele DeLathower at a reception in her honor on Sunday, April 24 th in Fellowship Hall from 1:00-3:00pm. Michele has been a vital part of Christ Church s ministry and missions in the ten years she has worked here. Her ability to manage, organize, schedule, communicate and respond to ever increasing needs of our growing congregation will be missed. We wish Michele continued success in her new job. April Prayer Focus Sunday Psalm 8, Psalm 122 Lord, we come to worship you today! We thank you for this church where we can come to be refreshed in your love and spirit. We ask that you send out angels to protect those that come to worship you, to the teachers, their helpers that share their time to be teaching our children. You endured so much pain and humiliation to take on all the sin of man. You are the savior of my soul. I praise you and worship you. I ask for you to guide our new youth leader and worship leader as he takes on the duties of teaching our young people about your love for each of us. Be with Shaun as learns to relate to the young people to understand and to make the transition go smooth from Matt to him. Wednesday Psalm 34, Psalm 69 Lord, how wonderful it is to be in your word. To know that we can learn to pray your words when we are lonely, lost and that form the comfort of your words we can become equip to rely on you. Your words can bring comfort, understanding, and joy. We are learning to be still and know that you are God. We go quietly into our war room to be in time with you. We ask that as we come to your house today to share the fellowship over a meal. To teach us to look for that open door to share your love, to share with the children that come together to learn about your love for them and that you protect all that enter your house. How valued we are in your sight. Sometimes it becomes so hard to wrap our heads around your love for us. So Lord we thank you for loving us. Now Lord as a group of people prepare to take their Walk to Emmaus, we ask that you bless this group of people in all that they will experience this weekend and the weeks to come. Merry Sunshine Preschool News March began in an ENORMOUS way. Merry Sunshiners were introduced to the concept of enormous when we read Elmer the Elephant, a book about a very unique patchwork elephant who teaches us it s ok to be ourselves. Our favorite part of the day was playing with the enormous bouncy ball! On March 2 nd and 3 rd we celebrated Dr. Seuss birthday with a Cat in the Hat Pattern Day for both classes. We played a thumbs up/ thumbs down rhyming game to find words that rhyme and words that don t rhyme. Both classes made strawberry banana fruit pattern kabobs and drank Seuss Juice for snack. P A G E 6 our classroom. The next class meetings were all about cooking. Both classes decorated chef hats and wore them while adding ingredients to our recipes. We shared our final products with the front office and the verdict was preschoolers are awesome chefs! During our last week of March we learned about eggs. Pastor Joye visited to teach us about the Resurrection Eggs. Ms. Teresa s class decorated their own eggs to eat the next time for snack and Ms. Becky s class painted paper eggs using a plastic egg as a stamp. On the last day before break, we had an Easter egg hunt with the generous help of our families! We cooked up some fun this month in our classrooms! Our theme was all about food/ cooking. The children were very involved in choosing what recipes they wanted to make. Ms. Teresa s class read Mouse Mess and decided they wanted to make fruit cups. Ms. Becky s class read Cook-A- Doodle-Doo and decided to make strawberry shortcakes. In preparation for our field trip, we had a grocery store Dramatic Center complete with HyVee nametags and aprons, food, cash registers, and shopping cart. At the end of our unit, we took a field trip to HyVee in Silvis. While there we got the grand tour. Our guide, Ms. Debbie, helped us find the different sections of the store, took us through the cooler, showed us how to decorate a cake in the bakery, and let us decorate and eat our own shamrock cookies. We saw community workers in action and experienced commerce for ourselves when we purchased groceries for Looking ahead to April preschoolers will learn all about weather. Our classroom will be set up to learn everything there is to know about the different types of weather and how the seasons change. We will celebrate Earth Day and learn about the story of Creation. Our next Family Night will be April 28 th. This will be the kick off to our final theme, plants and seeds. Registration was held March 7 th and 14 th. We still have spots available so if you or anyone you know has preschool age children, please spread the word. The Shawl Ministry stitchers make shawls, afghans, and quilts to distribute to congregation members who are experiencing difficult times. The items serve as reminders of God s healing presence and the church s support. In addition, the group sponsors the Christmas Scarf Project which brings holiday cheer to needy individuals in our community. Anyone interested in the Shawl Ministry and/or The Christmas Scarf Project is invited to attend the tea. Emily is a fourth grader and loves to play the piano! She was caught practicing in Fellowship Hall one evening and was promptly asked to play for the church. Thoughts from the Parish Nurse. I wanted to share with you a medical problem I had and how it was resolved. It could happen to any of you. In January I had my 5 th sleep study done. The ugly facts are that I snore. I have been told by my family that it s like a freight train! My previous studies have always been borderline. Finding myself more tired in late afternoons and evenings, I decided I d do this test one more time. I knew I might have a decent study when the tech informed me at 3 am that he had to turn the volume down due to my loud snoring. I then had to have a 6 th test done, with a C-pap to verify the diagnosis. So my EENT specialist and my family doctor both called telling me that yes, I had sleep apnea and an order would be called in to a home health care office for a C-Pap. After not hearing anything for 2 weeks, I called the home health care office. I was told I did not qualify. I can tell you I was one disappointed gal. A week later I decided to talk to this person, in person. She again told me I did not qualify, even after I explained when the tests were done and what the two doctors had told me. Steph Rabe CUMC Parish Nurse I let it go a day or two and then decided to call my PCP s office. The nurse said I certainly did qualify and read the report to me. She said she d call the home health care office and I should be hearing from them. I received a call that afternoon. I was told that she had looked at the testing done 3 years ago. I was set up the following week with my C-pap and I love it! But what if I had not kept calling? What if I had taken the first statement of not qualifying and done nothing? We all live in a health care world of needing to be our own advocates. We often need to be persistent. But being our own advocate when we are sick, can be difficult. Our head hurts, we may be on medication that plays with our thinking and our listening skills are not at our best. One day becomes another and our memory becomes clouded. What is being said, is not what we sometimes hear. When you are going to the doctor s office whether for a general checkup or when you are ill, take a notebook and pen with you. The notebook should contain 1-3 questions you want answered about your health. The notebook can then be used for the answers as well as any other instructions you are given. And remember, it is always OK to take someone with you. That second set of ears can be a great communication tool. Talking about the weather with your doctor or nurse practitioner is great, but utilize the time you have in the exam room to your benefit, for your health needs. Get all your questions answered before you leave the office. Do not be afraid to ask the question more than once or say out loud you do not understand what you are being told. Also be honest with the doctor. If you know you will not follow the instructions given, especially exercise, nutrition, or take the medication ordered, let your doctor know this. There may be another medication or solution that will work. P A G E 8 Most offices now write down instructions, so take those instructions home and review them once home. If there is something you don t understand after re-reading it, call the office back. The same holds true if you are hospitalized. Have a notebook available to list testing done, instructions given, staff names as well as questions that you think of at 10pm. This way when the hospitalist (the doctor caring for you while you are hospitalized) comes in at 6 am or before and you are sound asleep and your thoughts are not awake, you can grab the notebook to get those questions answered. If you are not able to write in the notebook, hand this job over to a trusted family member or friend. Your discharge is being planned the minute you are admitted to be sure you receive the proper education while in the hospital, before the day of discharge. You will receive written instructions as to medications to take, activity, nutrition needs, what to watch for and when to call the doctor or surgeon, as well as any home care needs or therapy that you will need to do. Again that second set of ears helps at discharge whether you are the patient or the caregiver. Another person to read over the written instructions will help your recovery. And if there is something you do not understand about what you need to do at home-ask! Steph Blood pressures will be taken on April 3 rd and April 24 th. Donna Fox Haiti Mission Trip, July 2016 I wish to thank all of my Christ United Methodist Church friends and family for your continued support of the people of Haiti. For you re allowing me to be your hands and feet in Haiti for Jesus Christ, our Savior and theirs. As I plan for my mission trip to Haiti this summer, I again covet your prayers. This year I pray to be able to take $500 to purchase supplies to start a business for the family of Fabrice Celeuse, a young boy, whom I met 6 years ago outside the gate at NWHM. He has met me every year to help keep me safe from motorcycles and rocks on our daily ministering walks. One year he pulled me up out of the river when I fell in. He and his brothers sell bracelets to missionaries, but in the off season they are hungry. His Mother, Claivani Merlien, prays to start a market business that will help them to have a steadier income. I pray to be able to buy more Creole Bibles for the youth club that was started to serve 25 children, and has grown to 50+ pre-school children to adults that cannot afford to go to school. Dresses and shorts have been donated. I will deliver the dresses and shorts to these children, donated by the Pockets of Love sit and sew group. I also plan to teach sewing to high school kids at House of Mosses and I am waiting to hear what supplies will be needed for that mission. COMMUNITY GARDEN UPDATE Dan Thorngren has been busy getting the garden ready for Spring planting. In the March issue of this newsletter, Dan asked for donations of toilet paper rolls to be used in planting onion sets. These sets have arrived and will be planted in the garden (roll and all) with the roll adding to the nutrients needed in the soil. To date, radishes, lettuce, dill and garlic onions have all been planted. Dan has ordered over 300 different types of sunflower seeds. These are planned for the corner of the church lot (2nd Avenue and 13th Street, behind our sign). At the same time, he will install approximately 65 feet of edging for the new bed. Somehow, Dan will come up with a way to make it squirrel proof! Those interested in leasing a plot at the Community Garden can pick up an information packet (which contains a form, along with other information, to be completed by the gardener) at the Silvis City Hall. Many gardeners have already done so, but there s still time to submit your form to Silvis Church (a self-addressed envelope (to the Silvis Church) is inside the packet). Now is the time if you are interested in helping with the garden. If you could donate your time once a week, once a month or just one day, volunteers are always welcome. P A G E 1 1 SILVIS YOUTH KUDOS to MADDIE!!!! Our very own Maddie Tague coordinated the Easter Egg Hunt for the kids at Silvis Church on Easter morning. Many thanks to those who donated eggs and candy and/or assisted the kids with the hunt! April 25, 5:30 pm Talent show starring both the K4C and Sunday evening teens. Spaghetti supper will be served in the Silvis Church Fellowship Hall for the K4C and their families before the Talent Show. Since 2007, the Silvis Church congregation has been sponsoring Rolph Sendley Pierre (pictured below). This young man lives at the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission (an orphanage on the north coast of Haiti on the Atlantic Ocean, see map also shown below). It all began when Hailey Crozier, daughter of Pastors Jim and Kathy Crozier, traveled to this orphanage on a mission trip. At that time, she was able to personally meet and get to know Rolph. He is now 13 years old and in the 5th Grade. While that seems like he should be in a higher grade by that age, we must remember the difficulties (poverty, education) these people face in Haiti. To date, the Silvis Church congregation has generously given over $6,500 toward his schooling and nutritional needs. What a special young man! July 25-28.Get Ready! VBS is coming! The Harvest Ministries Team is planning to travel to the Silvis UMC to be with us for an action packed week of Bible School FUN that includes faith based Bible lessons, games and craft activities, and lots of inspiring times of worship music. All kindergarten through sixth grade students are invited to come! Start praying NOW! Pray for children and youth to have an open mind and heart to receive the love of Christ and begin a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you to know who you should be inviting to come and be with us for this important week of evangelism. Last year, we had 50 kids from Christ UMC, Silvis UMC, and the Silvis neighborhood!!! God is opening the door once again for us to do a mighty work with the children in the area. Pray that we will be ready to embrace and do our very best to bring glory to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
