May is a month of graduations and completing projects before the summer. But those graduation ceremonies are often called Commencement. After every completion comes a new beginning, and sometimes, we have the opportunity to build on what we already have. What s next for you? In particular, to what is God calling you next? God may want your attention to a friend or family member. Lent and Easter seasons bring to mind the call to be reconciled how are you pursuing reconciliation in your life? God may be calling you deeper in learning to know him and walk more closely with him. Christian friendships and small groups are powerful venues for growing in Biblical understanding and prayer, and integrating our relationship with God throughout the aspects of our lives. How is God calling you to grow as Jesus disciple? communities)? What are the gifts that God has given this church that can make a difference for those needs? How do you fit in? What are some opportunities that would gather more of our people into the experience of serving God outside our walls? Think and pray about these questions, and if you have ideas, contact someone from the Service Discernment Team: a group of people praying, thinking and talking about what s next (see more in the article inside). Breaking Bread 4 UPCOMING It s hard to believe that we only have a few weeks left in the school year. Another great year of Sunday school and youth group is coming to an end. In June, 11 teenagers will board an airplane to Puerto Rico for our high school mission trip. And in July, 10 5 th through 8 th graders will explore the beaches of St. Simons and Jekyll islands for fun and the sun at our annual middle school beach trip. Even though things may be winding down for this school year, we have a lot of new and exciting developments for our youth program next year, one of which will include the launch of a new student leadership program with student-led small groups. We will also begin planning for our 2019 Pilgrimage for 9 th and 10 th grade students. More on that to come, but for now let me introduce our Take 5. Take 5 is a simple way for us to take 5 minutes to share a core value for our student ministry. At small groups, youth events, and even parent meetings, we will take 5 minutes to tell a story that highlights one of our 5 core values. Here is this month s Take 5! TAKE 5: LEAVE A LEGACY OF LOVE Let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. 1 John 3:18 (NLT) From the moment a young person starts school the only thing they know is change. Every year their classrooms, classmates, teachers, coaches, activities, and even schools change. Friends move away, and new friends move in. And while most students are simply focused on what lays ahead for them, few students take the time to think about what they are leaving behind. I like to ask our students how will they be remembered when they re gone? I remember a sign on an office door that read, Everyone brings joy to this office. Some when they come. Others when they go.
5 Breaking Bread For our seniors who are graduating this month, what legacy are you leaving behind? Will there be younger friends, teammates, and teachers who were blessed by their time with you? Did you positively impact your school s culture, making it a more fun and vibrant place? Will people remember you for the ways you loved and cared for them? Of course for all our students, you don t have to wait until graduation to think about what kind of legacy you re leaving. You actually get to choose what legacy you leave. You can take small actions every day to be a good friend to others, to help those in need, to be a positive influence, and to invest in younger students in your team, club, or band. You have the opportunity to leave a legacy of love that will stay with your school long after you have graduated. In order to leave a legacy of love, you first need to encounter God s love for you. After all, We love each other because he loved us first (1 John 4:19). That s why we are shifting towards a new theme and vision of connecting youth with the heart of God. Next year you ll have the opportunity to find a small group of peers to help you experience God s heart and leave a legacy of love everywhere you go. Breaking Bread 6 SAVE THE DATE MUST Summer Lunches 3:00pm Join us in the Parish Hall on June 3, 10, 17, & 24 to prepare lunches for needy kids in Cobb County. They answered, We have only five loaves of bread and two fish - unless we go and buy food for all this crowd. (About five thousand men were there)... This summer, the more than ten thousand Cobb County children who eat a federally funded free lunch during the school year might go hungry without our help. Feeding a county full of hungry children can seem like a daunting task, but the MUST Summer Lunch program does just that. This year, members and friends of St. Peter & St. Paul will make as many as 4, 000 sack lunches for Cobb County children whose families cannot afford to feed them. Join us on Sunday afternoons June 3, 10, 17 and 24 at 3:00pm to assemble 1000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches together with chips, cookies, and a juice box. What an excellent opportunity to involve your children (ages 10 and older) in helping others. Come join us in the Parish Hall Sundays at 3:00pm! Also, we are currently seeking new/additional leadership for this ministry. This is a great opportunity for couples and/families to take on since there are multiple areas and degrees of responsibilities involved. 7 Breaking Bread COOL GIRLS 2018 Cool Girls, Inc. is a nonprofit organization devoted to self-empowerment and nurturing girls in grades 2 8 that are living below the poverty level. Offering weekly programs that support their personal, social and academic needs, the organization emphasizes good morals and sound judgment and helps break the cycle of poverty, low self-esteem and teen pregnancy. Every summer for over 25 years The Episcopal Church of St. Peter & St. Paul has proudly hosted a Back to School Boutique where 200 girls come to East Cobb for a fun-filled day of eating, dancing, singing, crafts and shopping. The purpose is to get the girls excited about returning to school and ensure that they have some essentials necessary to succeed. Each girl is given a brand new backpack filled with school supplies and personal items, and then they are encouraged to "shop" in the Back to School Boutique. We are currently accepting the following items: NEW and VERY GENTLY USED. No clothes except pajamas please. PAJAMAS, PERSONAL CARE ITEMS, PURSES, JEWELRY HATS, GLOVES & SCARVES, SMALL DECORATIVE ITEMS, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, BOOKS, STUFFED ANIMALS: NEW Only Please leave your items in the COOL GIRLS bin in the outreach closet. In addition to your generous donations, we ask that parishioners "adopt" a Cool Girl. As in past years we will be handing out Pink tags with the information on how to fulfill the need for a brand new backpack for each Cool Girl to head back to school in the fall. We will be handing out tags on the following dates - be on the look out. June 9-10 June 16-17 June 23-24 Last, but definitely not least, please consider helping on the day of the event. Breaking Bread 8 St. Peter and St. Paul is again providing temporary shelter for several homeless families involved with Family Promise in 2018. There are opportunities for Dinner/Evening Hosting, Overnight Hosting, as well as helping to provide dinner each of the nights during the week we host. Sign ups will be available on our Sign up Genius web site. All who wish to become part of the Family Promise ministry and have not attended training please register at training@familypromisecobbcounty.org. Breaking Bread 10 Adult Christian Formation Offerings at St. Peter & St. Paul Spring/Summer 2018 Our mission is Growing Disciples of Jesus Christ. One of the ways we accomplish this is through adult Christian formation, the lifelong process of growing in our relationship with God, self, others, and all creation. We grow in prayer, scripture, service, and Christian fellowship, integrating our relationship with God into our daily lives. Group contact information is below. This class continues after Easter with a tour of other liturgies of the church: Morning and Evening Prayer, Marriage, Reconciliation, Healing, and the Burial Office. On May 6, The Rev Frank Baltz will teach on the ordination services, and on May 13, our Director of Music, George Chesnut, will teach on the Hymnal and church music. Growing Christian Families Sunday School Class Facilitators: Mike and Kim Nancarrow Location: Room 6 A discussion based on the book and video series Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World. Max Lucado leads readers to reflect on Philippians 4:4-8 which contains an antidote to anxiety that will help to develop a mindset of resilience. We will discuss practical ways to manage anxiety in ourselves and our children. There is no need to purchase the book. Lectionary Bible Study Facilitator: Jim Woodruff, John Patton, Jay Pongonis Location: Room 5 Heroes of the Bible will be discussed on March 11, 18 & 25. Each week, one hero will be presented by the facilitator with some background material and some bible verses that are pertinent to the hero and background material. Heros that might be included are Moses, Abraham, Jacob, Elijah, Peter, Paul, John, Ruth, Ester. It is always amazing to see how God takes ordinary people and helps them accomplish extraordinary feats. The course of study lasts 4 years, covering four subjects, respectively: Old Testament, New Testament, church history and modern theologians. According to the Gospel of John, when Andrew saw Jesus he followed him, but first found his brother Simon Peter and said to him, We have found the Messiah. Then he brought Peter to Jesus. The mission of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew is to bring others to Christ, just as Andrew brought his brother Peter. We do this through our three disciplines of Prayer, Study, and Service. Our meetings, held on every other Saturday morning (7:00 8:30) are open to all men of the church. We have a great breakfast, prayer, fellowship, Gospel study, and discussion for service projects. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew is the officially recognized men s ministry of the Episcopal Church. So whether you realize it or not, you are already a member. What we need is for you to take an active part in the ministry of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. We need you! We really do!
