LUKE 2:41 52 JESUS IN THE TEMPLE File no. 106 When Jesus was twelve years old, his family and friends went on a long journey to Jerusalem. They were going there for a festival called the Passover. 1

The Passover began when Moses was alive and God s people were slaves in Egypt. God was about to free them. God s people sprinkled the blood of a lamb or a goat around their doorways. When the angel of the Lord saw the blood on their doorway, he passed over their house and their eldest son was saved. Every year after the first Passover, God s people remembered that God saved them by celebrating the Passover festival. This was the festival that Jesus was now attending. 2

After the festival, everyone started on their long journey home, except Jesus. He stayed in Jerusalem. His Mother and Father did not know He was there. They thought He was with their friends. Everyone walked along singing, talking and playing games unaware that Jesus was not with them. At the end of the day, Mary and Joseph looked for Jesus among their relatives and friends. They could not find Him anywhere. 3

Mary and Joseph hurried back to Jerusalem and looked everywhere for Him. Where did they find Him? 4

He was in the temple, listening to the teachers of the law and asking them questions. The Teachers were amazed at what He understood and the questions He asked about God. They did not realise He was the Son of God. 5

When Mary saw Jesus she asked, Why didn't You come home with us? Jesus answered, Why were you looking for Me? Didn t you know I had to be in My Father s house? Who was His Father? It was God and the Temple was God s house. Mary and Joseph thought about all of these things. They were learning what it meant that Jesus was God s Son. 6

Jesus went home with Mary and Joseph. He obeyed them. He grew up to be wise. God, His Father, blessed Him and people loved Him. 7

MATTHEW 3:1 17 Isaiah 40:3; Mark 1:1 11; Luke 3:1 22; John 1:19-34 A PROPHET FOR GOD S PEOPLE / JOHN BAPTISES JESUS File no. 107 When John grew up he went to live in the desert. His clothes were made of camel s hair and he ate locusts and wild honey. He was filled with God s Spirit and was given the task of telling God s people that the Lord was coming to save them from their sins. 1

John stood by the River Jordan saying, Repent and be forgiven. A long time ago Isaiah told us that God s Son would come. He is here. Be ready for Him. 2

God s people had not heard God speak to them through a prophet for a long time. So they came from Jerusalem, Judea and all around the Jordan River to hear him. A lot of people believed John and were baptised in the River Jordan, confessing their sins. 3

Every day John went to the River. Every day he told the people to repent. He would say, I will baptise you with water, but God s Son will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 4

Then one day, as John was baptising people, Jesus came along. He went into the river and wanted John to baptise Him. He was doing what God, His Father, told Him to do. 5

As He came out of the water, the heavens opened and the Spirit of God came down on Him like a dove. God, His Father, spoke from heaven saying, 'You are My Son and I love You. I am very pleased with You. 6

MATTHEW 4:1 11 Mark 1:12,13; Luke 4:1-13 JESUS TEMPTED BY SATAN File no. 108 The Spirit of God led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. For the next forty days Jesus had nothing to eat and He was very hungry. 1

Satan said, If you are the Son of God, tell this rock to change into bread. Jesus said, I will not do that. It is written in God s word that a person does not live just by eating bread. He lives by God s word. 2

But Satan tried again. He took Jesus to Jerusalem and put Him on a high place of the Temple. He said to Jesus, If you are the Son of God, jump off! God won t let you get hurt. He will send angels to keep You from getting hurt. Jesus said, No, the Bible says: Do not test the Lord your God. 3

Satan had persuaded Israel to turn away from God when they were in a wilderness. Jesus did not let Satan do this to Him. 4

Satan tried something else. He took Jesus up a mountain. And showed Him the big cities. He said, If You will worship me, I will give all these cities to You. Again Jesus said, 'Go away from Me Satan! It is written in God s book, You must only worship the Lord your God. 5

Satan went away and angels came and helped Jesus. Satan would never defeat Jesus. Rather, Jesus had come to defeat Satan. This is why He died and rose again, so that Satan would never again be able to have power over His people. 6

Bible Stories for Young Children part of a curriculum prepared for young children JESUS FOLLOWERS by Chris Thorpe & people from Coromandel Baptist Church Illustrated by Kay Kammermann Website: www.corobaptist.org.au The following pages may be copied if they are unchanged, acknowledged and not used for profit 2008 Coromandel Baptist Church

JOHN 1:29 51 JESUS FOLLOWERS File no. 109 Down by the river John was speaking to the people when he saw Jesus coming towards him. He said, 'Look, here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! I was sent here to baptise you so that when He comes you would know who He is. I know it is He, because I saw the Spirit come down from heaven and stay on Him. He is the Son of God. 1

The next day John was standing by the river, with two of his disciples, and Jesus walked by. He watched Jesus. Then he said, 'Look, here is the Lamb of God. John s two disciples followed Jesus. They went to see where He was staying and talked with Him all day. 2

Andrew was one of those men. After listening to Jesus he went and found his brother and said. 'Simon, we have found the Messiah. Come and see Him. Simon came to Jesus. Jesus said, You are John s son, Simon. You will be called Peter. 3

The next day Jesus and His new friends travelled up to Galilee. They found Philip, a friend of Andrew and Peter. When Jesus saw Philip He said, Follow Me.' Philip followed Jesus and became a disciple. 4

Then Philip went and got his friend Nathanael. He said to Nathanael, 'Come and see. We have found the One that Moses and the prophets wrote about. Nathanael went with Philip to see Jesus. Jesus spoke to Nathanael, and Nathanael believed that Jesus was the Son of God. 5

All of these men became servants of God s kingdom. 6

Bible Stories for Young Children part of a curriculum prepared for young children JESUS GOES TO A WEDDING by Chris Thorpe & people from Coromandel Baptist Church Illustrated by Kay Kammermann Website: www.corobaptist.org.au The following pages may be copied if they are unchanged, acknowledged and not used for profit 2008 Coromandel Baptist Church

JOHN 2:1 11 JESUS GOES TO A WEDDING File no. 110 Jesus had some new friends. Andrew, Peter, John, Philip and Nathanael. They became some of Jesus disciples. 1

There was a wedding in Cana which Jesus and His disciples were invited to. Jesus mother was also there. Weddings in these times lasted a few days. It was a very happy time with plenty to eat and to drink. However, before the wedding feast was finished all the wine was gone. What would they do? 2

Mary, Jesus mother, saw that all the wine had been finished. She quietly went to Jesus and told Him about it. Jesus asked Mary, Why are you telling me? Mary believed that Jesus would do something. She said to the servants, Do whatever He tells you to do. 3

Now at the door of the house there were six very large stone jars. The water in them was for ceremonial washing. Jesus said to the servants, Go and fill these jars with water. When that was done He said, Now go and draw some water and take it to the head waiter for him to taste. 4

The head waiter tasted the water and it was wine. It was the best wine he had tasted. He did not know where it had come from. He said to the bridegroom, The good wine is usually served first then the not so good wine. You have kept the best wine until the last. 5

This first miracle Jesus did, changing water into wine, saved the families from embarrassment. It showed who Jesus was. Some people saw Jesus glory. His disciples believed in Him. 6

Bible Stories for Young Children part of a curriculum prepared for young children JESUS IN HIS FATHER S HOUSE by Chris Thorpe & people from Coromandel Baptist Church Illustrated by Kay Kammermann Website: www.corobaptist.org.au The following pages may be copied if they are unchanged, acknowledged and not used for profit 2008 Coromandel Baptist Church

JOHN 2:12 25 Psalm 69:9 JESUS IN HIS FATHER S HOUSE (Jesus shows that He has come to establish the true worship) File no. 111 The time for the Passover was near. Jesus and His disciples were on their way to Jerusalem for the festival. As they got closer Jesus heard strange noises. They were very loud. What were they? They were coming from the temple! 1

When they got there, They saw men selling cattle, sheep and doves. Others were sitting at tables changing money. 2

Jesus was cross. He knew that this was not what God s temple was for. So He made a whip, drove out the animals, tipped out the money and turned over the tables. Jesus said, Take these things away. This is My Father's house. This is a place for people to come and pray to God. It is not a market place. 3

The Jewish leaders watched Jesus and were angry. They said, Show us a sign that You have the right to do this. Jesus answered them saying, This will be the sign: Destroy this temple, and I will build it again in three days. 4

The people did not understand what Jesus was saying because they were only thinking of a building. Jesus was talking about His own body. His body was now God s temple. When people pulled down this temple by killing Him, God would raise it up again. 5

6 From this time on, people could only come to God through Jesus, the One who would die for their sins and be raised up again.

Bible Stories for Young Children part of a curriculum prepared for young children NICODEMUS COMES TO JESUS by Chris Thorpe & people from Coromandel Baptist Church Illustrated by Kay Kammermann Website: www.corobaptist.org.au The following pages may be copied if they are unchanged, acknowledged and not used for profit 2008 Coromandel Baptist Church

JOHN 3:1 21 John 2:23 25: Numbers 21:9 NICODEMUS COMES TO JESUS File no. 112 During the Passover Festival, many people saw the miracles Jesus did and they believed in Him. 1

Nicodemus, a teacher of God s law, saw the miracles Jesus was doing and wanted to talk to Him. So one night he came to Jesus and said, Sir, God must have sent you to teach us. These miracles You do can only be done if God is with You. Jesus said, God s kingdom can only be seen by those who are born of God. Born of God? Does that mean you have to become a baby again? Nicodemus asked. If you want to live in God s kingdom you need to be born by God s Spirit, said Jesus. 2

This was hard for Nicodemus to understand. So Jesus said to him, The Holy Spirit is like the wind. It blows, and you hear it, but you cannot see it. In the same way, the Holy Spirit comes to give us new life. 3

How can this happen? asked Nicodemus. Jesus said, You are a teacher in Israel. Why is it that you don t understand these things? Moses lifted up a bronze snake on a pole. Those who looked at it were saved. I must be lifted up like that. Anyone who believes in Me will be saved and have life forever. 4

God loves the world. That is why He sent His Son to us. He doesn t want us to be lost, but to come to Him and live. Coming to Jesus is like walking into the light. Jesus is God s light, but if people don t want God to see them, they stay away from Jesus. It is good to be in the light, because then we know God has welcomed us and forgiven us. 5

JOHN 4:1 42 THE WOMAN AT THE WELL File no. 113 Jesus and His disciples were going through Samaria on their way back to Galilee. They stopped in Sychar. The disciples went to buy lunch while Jesus rested by the well. 1

He had not been there very long when a lady came to get water. Jesus asked her. Please give Me a drink. She answered, You are a Jew. Why are You asking me for water? I am a Samaritan woman. You know we don t talk to each other. Jesus said, If you knew what God gives and who I am, you would ask Me and I would give you living water. 2

She said, Sir, You don t have a bucket and the well is deep. Jacob gave us this well. Are you greater than he? And from where would you get the living water? Jesus said, This water stops your thirst for a little while, but whoever drinks the water that I give you, will never get thirsty, and they will live forever. Give me that water, she said. Then I ll not have to come to this well again. 3

Go and bring your husband, Jesus told her. I have no husband, she said. Jesus said He knew about her many husbands. She was amazed that Jesus knew her. The lady said, Sir, I see that You are a prophet. The Jews tell us that we can only worship God in Jerusalem. Jesus said to her, Soon you will worship God anywhere for God is spirit. Those who worship God must worship Him in spirit and truth. 4

Sir, I know that the Messiah is coming. When He comes, He will teach us everything, answered the woman. Jesus said, I am the One you are waiting for. 5

The disciples returned with lunch, so the lady left her water pot and ran back to the village. Come quickly, she said to the men there. Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done. Could He be the Messiah? 6

After the lady had gone the disciples tried to get Jesus to eat. Jesus said to them, I have food to eat that you don t know about. My food is to do what My Father wants Me to do. 7

Back in the village the men listened to the lady and believed all that she told them about Jesus. They went with her to where Jesus was and asked Him to stay with them to tell them more. Many of these people believed that He was the Saviour of the world. 8

LUKE 5:1 11 PETER S GREAT CATCH File no. 114 Jesus was standing by the lake talking to a few people. Others joined them and soon there was a big crowd listening to Jesus speaking God s word 1

Everyone tried to get close to Him. So Jesus looked around and saw two fishing boats. One of them was Peter s. Jesus hopped into Peter s boat and went on speaking to the crowd. 2

After He had finished speaking Jesus said to Peter, Take your boat out into deep water, let down your net and catch some fish. Peter said, Master, we have worked all night. We caught nothing. But, because You said to throw the net in, I ll throw it in again. 3

He did what Jesus told him to do and they caught hundreds of fish. There were too many fish for one boat. Peter called to his friends saying, Come and help us. 4

James and John came with their boat. Soon the two boats were so full they nearly sank 5

Peter saw this miracle. He grew in faith and understanding. He fell down at Jesus feet and said, Go away from me, Lord, I am a sinful man. The others were amazed too. 6

Jesus said to them, Don t be afraid. From now on you will catch men. Peter and his friends left their boats and followed Jesus. 7

JOHN 5:1 24 LAME FOR THIRTY EIGHT YEARS File no. 115 When Jesus came into Jerusalem He saw the sick, blind and lame people waiting by a pool. They were waiting for the water to move, thinking that the first one to get into the water would be healed. 1

Jesus spoke to a man who had been lame for thirty-eight years, and said, Do you want to be well? The man answered, Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water moves. While I am going there, someone else gets into the water before me. Jesus said. Stand up! Pick up your bed and walk. Straight away the man stood up, picked up his bed and walked. 2

All this happened on the Sabbath day when Jews thought no work was to be done. The man walked past the Jewish teachers and they stopped him and said, You re not allowed to carry your bed. That s work. The man who made me well told me to pick up my bed and walk, answered the man. I don t know who it was who healed me. 3

Later, Jesus found the man in the temple. He said, You are well now. Don t sin any more or something worse may happen to you 4

Straight away the man went to the Jewish teachers and said, The man who healed me was Jesus. 5

The teachers were angry and accused Jesus of breaking their rules. But Jesus said to them, My Father is working, so I work. This really made the teachers angry. They were going to try and get rid of Jesus. Not only was He breaking their rules, but He was calling God His Father! 6

Jesus went on to say, I do what My Father shows Me. The Father loves Me. He will show Me greater things to do so that you will be surprised. Anyone who hears what I say and believes in the Father, the One who sent Me, has life that never ends. 7

MARK 2:1 12; Matthew 9:1 8; Luke 5:17 26 DOWN THROUGH THE ROOF File no. 116 The news was out. Jesus was home. The people of Capernaum came from everywhere to listen to Him speak God s word. Scribes came too. They sat near Jesus and watched Him. Soon the place was full. No-one else could get in. 1

Outside the house four men had brought their paralysed friend on a bed. They believed that Jesus could heal him. There was no way to get in. So, up the stairs and onto the roof they took their friend. 2

They made a hole in the roof, tied ropes to the bed, and let their friend down right in front of Jesus. Jesus saw their faith. He looked at the paralysed man and said Son, your sins are forgiven. 3

The scribes who were there were thinking, How can He say that? Only God can forgive sins! Jesus knew what they were thinking, and asked them, Why do you question what I have done? Is it easier to say, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Stand up and walk? I will show you that I have authority to forgive sins. 4

He then turned to the sick man and said, Stand up! Roll up your bed and walk. And that is what the man did. He walked out with his bed under his arm. Everyone watched and was amazed. They had seen God s love in action, setting this man free. Jesus truly was the Son of Man having authority to forgive sins and to heal. 5

MATTHEW 9:9 13 Mark 2:13 17; Luke 5:27 32 MATTHEW BECOMES A DISCIPLE File no. 117 There was a man called Matthew who collected people s taxes. The Jews hated tax collectors, and they hated Matthew. 1

Sometimes Matthew heard people talk about Jesus and he saw Jesus when He walked by. Then one day Jesus came to Matthew and said, Come and follow Me. Matthew got up straight away. He left his office and followed Jesus. He listened to Him talk about God, His Father, and about His kingdom. 2

Many of Matthew s friends wanted to meet Jesus, so Matthew prepared a big feast and invited them all to come. Most of his friends were tax collectors as he was. 3

Even though the Pharisees did not like Jesus, they wanted to know what He was doing. They watched Him eat with Matthew and his friends, and wondered, How could Jesus be a friend of sinners? They asked Jesus disciples, Why do you and your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners? 4

Jesus heard them and answered saying, People who are well don t need a doctor. A doctor is for sick people. I have come to call sinners to repent and turn away from their sins. Have a look and see in your scriptures what God requires. I want mercy, not sacrifice. 5

Matthew believed Jesus and became a servant of God s kingdom. 6
