This will be held from May 16 to 23. Our General recently wrote about unity in his pastoral letter to Salvationists. I quote: How moving it has been, how inspirational, to witness our unity in the Army's global response to the Haiti earthquake and shortly thereafter to the quake in Chile. The instant, godly response has been wonderful, resulting in personnel, money, and equipment from across the globe in answer to the plight of the victims. Again, God is blessing and deepening our unity in Christ and in our callings to be Salvationists in a hurting world. Unity pleases God. The Scriptures make this clear. In John 17 we read our Lord's passionate prayer that his committed followers would not allow discord to divide them. In Romans 12:5 Paul reminds us that 'in Christ we who are many form one body.' So let us each work for unity, especially in our local corps. A united corps is a growing corps. A united corps is an attractive, and attracting, corps. Therefore I am praying for strong unity in the Army. I am asking God to deepen still further the bonds that unite us. I am praying that there will be no spirit of strife among us. I am pleading in prayer for unity in every part, and in every place where the Trinitarian flag of God's Army - the yellow, red and blue - flutters in the breeze, whether it be Africa or America, whether it be north or south, east or west. Let s join our prayers for unity with those of General Clifton Shaw. May God bless you richly, Captains Tim & Laura & Majors Peter and Eileen

Red Shield Appeal Doorknock 29 & 30 May 2010 The Red Shield Appeal is the Salvation Army s nationwide fundraising appeal to meet budget needs for it s many community service programs. The national fundraising target for 2010 is $75 million. During the Red Shield Appeal doorknock a maximum effort will be made to knock on every door in every town, city and country area. Did you know? The Salvation Army helps more than one million Australians every year; one person every 30 seconds on average. In a typical week across Australia, the salvos provide approximately 100,000 meals for the hungry, 2000 beds for the homeless, 1000 people with assistance in finding employment, 3000 elderly people with aged care services, and a range of other support programs. Here at Canberra City Oasis we have a huge area to cover for the Doorknock. We are grateful to ADFA for their assistance and to a number of schools within our area who have volunteered to assist us. Please consider how best you can assist your corps meet its target. We need people to knock on doors, we need drivers and we need people to organise catering and assistance with collectors counting their money. See Major Peter or Captain Tim today and offer your assistance. Values of our Church COMPASSION Compassion might be defined as: Mercy that leads to action! Thought for the month: How is this reflected in my life and my church? Celebration of Thanksgiving Service Canberra City Oasis Corps 9.30am Sunday 16 May 2010 An opportunity to learn about some of our Social expressions in Canberra and to thank those involved. CRS Choir will be taking part. Self Denial Appeal Thank you for your support of this year s Self Denial appeal. Our records indicate that so far we have banked $8,505 towards the appeal. We will provide a final figure in next month s newsletter.

Invitation from the Australian Christian Lobby: Canberra is known throughout Australia as the porn capital. Our laws regarding adult material and sex work are the most liberal throughout our nation. Unfortunately this means that the Canberra sex industry feeds the illegal sex trade of children and women. Over the last two years there has been indisputable evidence that this illegal industry is alive and well in Canberra. Firstly there is the recent case of the Canberra man discovered to be keeping women as sex slaves, and even more saddening was the case of Janine Cameron, the 17 year old girl who was found dead of a heroin overdose while working in a Canberra brothel. As the Church it is certainly our responsibility to address these issues of darkness in our beautiful city, and here is an opportunity to do so. Victor Malerek is an award winning Canadian journalist who is an expert on sex trafficking, and has written numerous books on the subject. His most recently released book is called The Johns Sex for Sale and the Men who Buy It and it lays bare the sordid side of the global flesh trade and shines the light on the men who fuel the demand for purchased sex. Victor is coming to Canberra on the 24th of May, sponsored by the social justice arm of Salvation Army, to give a talk at Parliament House on the links between the illegal sex trade and the legal industry. The details are at the bottom of this email. I believe this is an important opportunity to get some traction on this issue, especially considering the recommendations for Janine Cameron s case have yet to be concluded by the coroner. Please join us at this discussion about human trafficking, SEX ON DEMAND Who: Victor Malarek award winning Canadian journalist and expert on sex trafficking Where: Parliament House - Theatrette When: Monday 24th May Time: 4:15pm for 4:30pm sharp RSVP: melinda@tankardreist.com or Amanda Hart on 03 8878 4777

Fair Trade Fortnight 2010 1 16 May 2010 Fair Trade Fortnight (1-16 May) is Australia and New Zealand's biggest annual celebration of all things fair trade. With activities and events happening across both countries, the Fortnight gives each of us the opportunity to celebrate and recognise the life-changing difference fair trade makes for millions of developing country farmers, their families and communities. This Fair Trade Fortnight Aussies and Kiwis are being urged to make The Big Swap! Making the swap from your usual products to fair trade ones is simple but it can help make a big difference to the lives of developing country farmers - giving them access to fair prices and money to invest in everyday things for their communities such as education and healthcare. It also promotes sustainable farming practices. So this Fair Trade Fortnight, whether it s your daily caffeine fix, afternoon cuppa, chocolate treat, bananas (NZ only) or even the Mother's Day gift you give make the swap to fair trade and help create a better and brighter future for farmers and their families across the globe. Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate is now Fairtrade Certified and starting to hit shelves across both Australia and New Zealand. Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate products becoming Fairtrade Certified will increase Fairtrade chocolate sales 20 fold, and double last year s total sales of Fairtrade Certified products in New Zealand and Australia. In Ghana, more than 45,000 Ghanaian farmers will immediately benefit from Cadbury s global move to Fairtrade. Next time you buy look for the fair trade label!! Certification for Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate products. Fairtrade provides farmers with the security of fair and stable prices for their produce and social premiums for investment in economic and local community development. Fairtrade helps these communities through trade not aid.
