Our Patron Saint : The Prayer of Saint Francis Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.

Attributed to Francis Bernadone, perhaps the most universally loved of Christian saints, who was born in Assisi, Italy, in 1181 or 1182. At the age of twenty-two, after a sudden illness that brought him almost to the point of death, he left his home and inheritance to follow an injunction that he felt he received from Christ himself: "Francis, go and rebuild my Church." Three great Franciscan orders quickly grew around the monks, nuns, and lay disciples who responded to his joyful example of universal love and selfless service. From The Desk Of The Worthy Faithful Navigator: FN Monthly Newsletter January 2017 Sir Knights, we begin another year with renewed enthusiasm, I always look at January as time to look at what is done and where do we go from here? Sometimes I feel we need to do more however when you look at it we have done very well for a small Assembly. We need to look to each other and share our wants and ideas, then act on them. With our current membership it will be difficult to change much. So there is our answer, more members who want to help out, recruitment is one area we have troubles as most are aware membership has not grown for our Assembly. I ask each of you to look where you could help. Well we will be having our meeting this month January 25 th 7:00 pm sword drill, meeting starts at 7:30 pm please make every effort to come out, there are members who are away and we need each of you to be there. With discussion with our Faithful Friar Father Pilon we will celebrate Flag Day February 12 at the 11 am mass, Please arrive at 10:30 am for Honor Guard lower Father Ellard Hall we will be carry Flags so we need Red Caps. I am helping with membership 3 rd degree I have asked our Past Faithful Navigator Sir Knight Lorne Winkler to fill in for me I will be in my official uniform. A good turnout would be appreciated. Well here is a topic that most would say it is too early to consider, elections for 2017-2018 and maybe for some it is. Let s look at this way, if you desire to run for a position on the executive once you put your name in and are elected or appointed you now will be committed to attending meetings, management and the growth of your Assembly. You should have the support of your family and your fellow Sir Knights as time in the 21 st century is so limited. If considering to take on a position on the executive at this time, it gives time to consider the position responsibilities that comes with it. You must realize you are not just a

member you are a resource and activated you will make a difference that others will honor and respect. Membership, yes we need to focus on this topic not just for the 4 th degree but for the 3 rd as they are our future members, as Sir Knights we need to stand with them and work with them as a strong 4 th degree member is an active 3 rd degree member. We have a Facebook page, we now also have a web page http://stfrancisassembly3495.org (Thank You Brother Tino Sanfilippo) Check it out. I am hoping to see you at our meeting January 25, 2017 please come and celebrate with us in prayer and in ceremonial. Your input is always welcomed. January2016 Honor Guard Schedule Mark your Calendars Assembly 3495 is very active our Commanders will make contact with you or better yet call them and let them know you will be there to support honor Guards that you can help with. Sir Knights please note that Commanders are in charge of all Honor Guards and you should arrive in full official uniform, officers should wear there office badge.

Vivat Jesus Michael Dynes FN Saint of Month Brother Andre Bessette Feast Day January 7 He was born Alfred Bessette in a small Quebec town situated 40 kilometres from Montreal. Bessette was the ninth of 13 children (four of whom died in infancy). He was so frail when he was born that he was baptized the following day, completing an emergency ritual performed at his birth. He was from a working-class family; his father, Isaac Bessette,

was a carpenter and lumberman, and his mother, Clothilde Foisy Bessette, saw to the education of her children. In 1849, with employment scarce and his family living in poverty, Alfred's father decided to move to Farnham, Quebec where he hoped to earn a living as a lumberman. Tragically, he lost his life in an accident, crushed by a falling tree, when Alfred was only nine years old. His wife found herself widowed at the age of forty with ten children in her care. She died of tuberculosis within three years, and Alfred found himself orphaned at the age of twelve. After several years of travelling looking for work, he returned to Quebec where the pastor of his parish, the Rev. André Provençal, noticed the devotion and generosity of the young man. He decided to present Alfred to the Congregation of Holy Cross in Montreal, writing a note to the superior, "I'm sending you a saint." Although he was initially rejected by the order because of frail health, Archbishop Ignace Bourget of Montreal intervened on his behalf, and in 1872, Alfred was accepted, and entered the novitiate of the congregation, receiving the religious name of Brother André, by which he was known for the rest of his life. He made his final vows on February 2, 1874, at the age of 28. André was given the task of porter at Notre Dame College in Côte-des-Neiges, Quebec, with additional duties as sacristan, laundry worker and messenger. When I joined this community, the superiors showed me the door, and I remained 40 years, he said. His great confidence in Saint Joseph inspired him to recommend this saint's devotion to all those who were afflicted in various ways. On his many visits to the sick in their homes, he would rub the sick person lightly with oil taken from a lamp burning in the college chapel and recommend them in prayer to St. Joseph. People claimed that they had been cured through the prayers of the good Brother and Saint Joseph, and they were grateful their prayers had been heard. Brother André steadfastly refused to take any credit for these cures. Because he wanted St. Joseph to be honoured, in 1904 Bessette began the campaign to erect a chapel to honour the saint. The chapel grew to become a church, the church to become Saint Joseph s Oratory through the many small donations from parishioners and visitors. When an epidemic broke out at a nearby college, André volunteered to nurse. Not one person died. The trickle of sick people to his door became a flood. His superiors were uneasy; diocesan authorities were suspicious; doctors called him a quack. I do not cure, he said again and again. St. Joseph cures. In the end he needed four secretaries to handle the 80,000 letters he received each year. As tensions increased at the College with so many of the sick coming to see the porter, the school officials decided that Brother André could no longer continue with his ministry. He was permitted to receive the sick in the nearby tramway station rather than the College. As his reputation spread, Brother André became quite a controversial figure. There were many religious in the Congregation of Holy Cross, teachers and parents of students at the College who supported him but many others opposed him and even considered him dangerous to the well-being of the school s reputation because they regarded him as a charlatan. Others were concerned for the good health of the children, fearing the possibility of contagion in the school spread from diseases carried by the sick that frequented Brother André.

Brother André Bessette died in 1937, at the age of 91. A million people filed past his coffin. The remains of Bessette lie in the church he helped build. His body lies in a tomb built below the Oratory's Main Chapel, except for his heart, which is preserved in a reliquary in the same Oratory. The heart was stolen in March 1973, but was recovered in December 1974. Brother André was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 23, 1982. His memorial is celebrated in Canada on January 7. On December 19, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI promulgated a decree recognizing a second miracle at Blessed André's intercession, and on October 17, 2010, formally declared sainthood for him. Brother André (c. 1920)

Worthy Faithful Navigators and Sir Knights: Earlier this weekend you received an e-mail from the Master which outlined that a prayer to St. Joseph had been composed by the District, --- and as well, -- that prayer cards would be issued to the assemblies to facilitate this prayer being said. As we are the Patriotic Arm of the Order, this prayer is especially significant as it reflects on Canada s 150 th anniversary in 2017. I know that many of you have adopted the practice of concluding honour guards with a closing prayer recited in unison by the participating Sir Knights. If it is not currently being done, we would ask that your assembly adopt this practice, ---- and this prayer to St. Joseph be incorporated into the reflection that you would undertake. As we are still in the process of having the prayer cards printed, I am attaching a copy above (both front and back) of the card that you will be receiving shortly. In the meantime I would ask that you make as many copies of the above as required so that each member of your recently scheduled honour guards will be in possession of the text. We will be making arrangements to ensure that the actual prayer cards are sent out to each assembly as soon as possible.
