CHRISTOPHER WEST We all have a hunger to connect with the beginning of things, to journey to the origins of the people, events, and realities that have shaped our lives. That s why I ll never forget the overwhelming sense of awe and wonder I felt when the plane touched down in Poland. I ve had the privilege of traveling around the world, but this was different. This was sacred ground: the martyr of nations, as Poland has been called, and the land that gave birth to the man whose teaching shaped my life Saint John Paul II. I was there to walk in his footsteps, to trace his life, to see what he saw, to journey in some way into his heart by being in the land he loved so deeply. I simply can t describe the experience of being in the room where he was born, of touching the baptismal font where he was baptized, of being in the Cathedral where he preached, and of sitting in the chair in which he wrote his Theology of the Body. It was life changing an experience I would want everyone who has been touched by this amazing saint to have. That s why I m going back. And I m inviting you to come with me! This summer, from Aug. 20-29, the Cor Project will be sponsoring a pilgrimage to Poland where we will explore sites in Warsaw, Krakow, Wadowice and other places that played integral roles in the life of Saint John Paul II and the development of his Theology of the Body. One of the highlights of our pilgrimage will be Aug. 27, when we are scheduled to have Mass in the private chapel at the Archbishop s Palace where Saint John Paul II was ordained a priest and where, in front of the Blessed Sacrament, he wrote the Theology of the Body. Then, most exciting of all, after Mass we will have an audience with his Eminence Stanislaw Cardinal Dziwisz, Saint John Paul II s private secretary of 40 years! Truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Beyond the rich knowledge we will gain from our official tour guides, I will be sharing reflections each day on the life and teaching of Saint John Paul II, Jason Clark will be leading music at our daily liturgies, and the long time priest-advisor of my ministry, Father Jim Otto, will serve as our chaplain. While this is an excellent opportunity to step away from the normal routines and busyness of life, I wouldn t look at it as a vacation. We re going on a sacred journey into the heart of a sacred land, into the heart of a sacred man, and into the sacred terrain of our own hearts where we will encounter new depths of the gift of Saint John Paul II, his Theology of the Body, and what it means for our everyday lives. I m looking forward with great expectation to being with you on this spiritual pilgrimage and to receiving all the blessings and graces the Lord has in store for us. Saint John Paul II, pray for us! Warsaw Czestochowa Photos courtesy of Bill Howard, Stephen Binz and Christopher West. Itinerary Thursday, Aug. 20 Day 1 DEPART FROM U.S.A. Pilgrims leave this evening on an overnight flight from JFK to Warsaw. (Dinner and breakfast are served aboard the flight.) FRIday, Aug. 21 Day 2 WARSAW Welcome to Poland! We are met by our tour director and transferred to the hotel. We begin our journey by going to the Shrine of the Polish Martyrs to celebrate Mass and to see the convent of St. Faustina, who was canonized by John Paul II. Afternoon is at leisure to become acclimated to a new time zone. Tonight we have a welcome dinner at a local restaurant with wine. Overnight in Warsaw. (Special dinner) SATURday, Aug. 22 Day 3 NIEPOKALANOW We depart early this morning to visit the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary the Immaculate and the Franciscan Monastery founded by St. Maximillian Kolbe, who was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982. We will celebrate Mass here. The sightseeing of Poland s capital includes the Old Town, marketplace, Lazienska Park, Chopin Monument, Royal Castle, the residence of the Polish Kings, St. Stanislaw Kostka Church and the 14th century Cathedral of St. John. Overnight in Warsaw with dinner at the hotel. (B, D) SUNday, Aug. 23 Day 4 CZESTOCHOWA Today we follow in John Paul II s footsteps to Jasna Gora Monastery, with the Black Madonna and its incredible relics, including the blood-stained sash worn by John Paul II during the assassination attempt on his life in 1981. Explore the Pauline Monastery with its priceless treasures, including the Miraculous Icon and the Treasury. Mass will be celebrated in Czestochowa, where we have time for prayer and reflection. Overnight in Krakow. (B, D)

MONday, Aug. 24 Day 5 AUSCHWITZ WIELICZKA SALT MINES KRAKOW We follow John Paul II to the former Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the biggest death factory in the history of humanity and the silent witness of human tragedy. We see the cell of St. Maximillian Kolbe, who was martyred there on Aug. 14, 1941. This afternoon, we explore the Wieliczka Salt Mines, which have been in use for over 700 years and contain many fascinating statues, chapels and reliefs, all carved from salt. Before he was pope, Karol Wojtyla visited this site, known as the Underground Salt Cathedral of Poland. Here we celebrate Mass. Overnight in Krakow with dinner at the hotel. (B, D) TUESday, Aug. 25 Day 6 KRAKOW Morning sightseeing of ancient Krakow, for centuries the residence of the Polish Kings. See the Market Square, Jagiellonian University (which dates back to the 14th century and was where John Paul II studied and taught) and Wawel Hill (including the Cathedral and the Royal Castle). Among the inspirational sights we see today is the St. Stanislaus Shrine, which contains the relics, in a silver coffin, of Poland s famous patron saint. After seeing the Holy Cross Chapel, Wawel Cathedral and Sigismund Chapel, we go to St. Mary s Church where we can hear the silver trumpet call every hour. Mass will be celebrated here. Our visit includes the Archdiocesan Museum, which houses a reconstructed Pope s Room and the famous Pope s Window. We drive by the Blonie Fields, where St. John Paul II celebrated Mass for millions of pilgrims on his first visit to Poland as pontiff. This is where the Vigil Mass will be celebrated by Pope Francis during the World Youth Day 2016 celebration in Krakow. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the city. This is also an opportunity to go in private to the home of Jan Tyranowski, who was central in the formation of a young Karol Wojtyla by introducing him to the writings of St. John of the Cross. Enjoy dinner in one of the many cafés in the Market Square. Overnight in Krakow. (B, Dinner on your own) WednESday, Aug. 26 Day 7 WADOWICE Polish Jerusalem (Kalwaria Zebrzydowska) We head on to Wadowice, birthplace of St. John Paul II. See the church where he was baptized and celebrate Mass in this holy site. Tour the home where he was born and even taste his favorite dessert in the same café where he enjoyed it daily. Continue to the Franciscan Monastery with 43 Chapels honoring the Way of the Cross, the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary and Seven Sorrows in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. Overnight in Krakow. (B, D) THURSday, Aug. 27 Day 8 MEETING WITH CARDINAL DZIWISZ ZAKOPANE We begin the day with Mass celebrated by our chaplain in the private chapel at the Archbishop s Palace in Krakow, where John Paul II was ordained and where he wrote the Theology of the Body. We will then have a special reception with Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz of Krakow, the private secretary and close friend of St. John Paul II. We then head high in the Tatra Mountains where St. John Paul II often came to hike and pray in nature. We will stop at Our Lady of Fatima Church built of local lumber by the highlanders in gratitude to Our Lady of Fatima for her protection of Pope John Paul II during the assassination attempt on his life in 1981. After enjoying lunch in a typical highlander restaurant, weather permitting, we will take the funicular to Mt. Kasprowy to get an extraordinary view of the Tatra Mountains. We wrap up the day with down time to relax or shop on Krupowski Street before departing back to Krakow for overnight and dinner at the hotel.
