During this time, the readings and prayers of Mass turn toward the Passion of the Lord. Accordingly, as a sign of mourning, it is customary to cover all crosses, statues, and images in the church. Votive candles are not lit during this time. This year, we read the story of the raising of Lazarus (John 11:1 45) on the Fifth Sunday of Lent. In the Gospel of John, the raising of Lazarus, ironically, leads to Jesus own Death and Resurrection (see John 11:53). Palm Sunday Next weekend, April 12 13, is Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, which marks the beginning of Holy Week. There will be a procession from the soccer field to the church at the Sunday 9:00am Mass only. While palms will be distributed at the other Masses, this will take place in the commons. (The Church s liturgical law allows the procession at only the principal Mass on Palm Sunday.) Given the procession at the 9:00am Mass, you are kindly asked to arrive early. Ushers will be on hand to direct traffic, in order to protect the safety of all involved, and to ensure the orderly and reverent celebration. Since the Passion is read on Palm Sunday, the Mass will take longer than normal. Therefore, it is essential to begin on time. Chrism Mass The annual Chrism Mass, at which priests renew their promises made at ordination, and the holy oils are blessed by the bishop, will take place on Monday, April 14 at 6:00pm at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond. All are welcome to attend. (Free parking will be available at the nearby VCU parking deck.) (The term Vespers is derived from the Latin word vespera, which means evening. ) Vespers or Evening Prayer is part of the Liturgy of the Hours, the official prayer of the Church that consists of the Psalms and other biblical readings. The purpose of the Liturgy of the Hours is to sanctify the day and the whole range of human activity (General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours, no. 11). The chanting of Vespers is a beautiful celebration that enables us to meditate upon the Lenten season. Vespers lasts approximately 30 minutes and does not require fasting beforehand. Vacation Bible School will be held from Monday, June 9 to Friday, June 13. Early bird registration will be $10 per child with a cap of $40 per family; early bird registration will be accepted through April 13. All registration fees must be paid by April 13 in order to qualify for the early bird rate. Regular registration will be $15 per child with a cap of $60 per family. Easter Flowers The parish office is now accepting orders for Easter flowers. Easter flowers may be given in memory of or in honor of friends or loved ones. The Easter Lilies are $15 each, the four floral arrangements needed for Holy Thursday are $50 each. Please fill out a form and put it in an envelope with your check, and drop it in the offertory basket or by the parish office. The names will be printed in the Easter Bulletin. The deadline for ordering is Friday, April 11. Rice Bowls Fifth Week of Lent This fifth week of Lent, CRS Rice Bowl takes us to the rural areas of Haiti, where the nearest healthcare centers and hospitals are several days travel away. To help sick families get medical assistance when they need it, CRS has trained residents of small rural communities to administer vaccines, medicines, give basic check-ups and referrals and provide nutritional guidance to their neighbors. We consider how we are also called to help people in our communities. (Catholic social teaching principle: Community and Participation) Read the Haiti story at crsricebowl.org. Prayer: Join us this week in praying for all those who care for the sick. May those who are ill and suffering receive the gift of God s loving grace to lift up their spirits and provide relief from their pain. Sacred Heart Students will Mass on Wednesdays at 8:25am during Lent in the church. Parishioners are invited to attend. Sixth graders will present Living Stations of the Cross at 11:30am on Thursday, April 17 in the Holy Family Gym. All are invited to attend. SHS will close on Thursday, April 17 at 12:30pm for Easter and reopen on Monday, April 21. Students will attend school on April 21, originally scheduled as a holiday, in order to make up for a snow day. The 24 th annual SHS Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Friday, May 2 at Goodyear Golf Course. The captain s choice, 4 player team, shot gun start tournament will begin at 1:00pm.
