He s Got the Joy, Joy, Joy Third Sunday of Advent December 13 & 14, 2014

Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: Joy to the world! is an often-echoed refrain in these days of preparation and celebration before Christmas. But where is true joy to be found? It is found in Christ alone. The coming of Christ as the Savior of the world is the ultimate source of joy for our lives, no matter how we might be feeling during the weeks of the holiday season. True joy is not just for one time of year or for one time of our lives. The happiness that we feel in our hearts at any given moment may come and go, but the joy that is found in Jesus lasts for all of our lives and beyond into the endless celebration in God s eternal kingdom. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come to us with Your presence. Restore to us the joy of Your salvation and grant us a deep and abiding peace for all of our days. By the working of the Holy Spirit, lead us to share the joy that is ours without hesitation. Keep us in true faith until the coming of Your glorious kingdom, where You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2

THE DIVINE SERVICE OPENING HYMN Jesus, Your Church with Longing Eyes TLH 64 Jesus, Your Church with longing eyes For Your expected coming waits. When will the promised light arise And glory beam from heaven s gates? E en now, when tempests round us fall And wintry clouds o ercast the sky, Your words with pleasure we recall And know that our redemption s nigh. Come, gracious Lord, our hearts renew, Our sins forgive, our foes suppress, Our rooted enmity subdue, And crown Your Gospel with success. Oh, come and reign o er ev ry land; Let Satan from his throne be hurled. Let nations bow to Your command; Let grace revive a dying world. Teach us in watchfulness and prayer To wait for Your appointed hour, And fit us by Your grace to share The triumphs of Your conqu ring pow r. Text: William H. Bathurst, 1796 1877, abr., alt. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION O God our Father, since You have set forth the way of life for us in Your beloved Son, we confess with shame our slowness to learn of Him, our failure to follow Him, and our reluctance to bear the cross. Have mercy on us and forgive us, O Lord. Forgive us for the poverty of our worship, our neglect of fellowship and of the Means of Grace, our hesitating witness for Christ, our evasion of responsibility in Your service, and our imperfect stewardship of Your gifts. Have mercy on us and forgive us, O God. Forgive us that so little of Your love has reached others through us, that we have been thoughtless in our judgments, hasty in condemnation, grudging in forgiveness, slow to seek reconciliation, and unwilling to help our neighbors as we ought. Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your steadfast love. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and put a new and right spirit within us. Upon this your confession and by the command of our Lord, I, a called and ordained servant of Christ, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 4

May the God of peace sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, and He will do it. Amen. Confession adapted from A Service of Prayer and Preaching III, Worship Supplement, 1969 Concordia Publishing House. All rights reserved. Used by permission. INTROIT Psalm 85:8 9, 12 13; antiphon: Psalm 85:7 Women: Men: Women: Men: Show us Your steadfast love, O LORD, and grant us Your salvation. Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace to His people, to His saints; but let them not turn back to folly. Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land. Yes, the LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before Him and make His footsteps a way. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Show us Your steadfast love, O LORD, and grant us Your salvation. 5

Glory to You, O Lord. (The Gospel is read.) This is the Gospel of the Lord. 7

Praise to You, O Christ. CREED Second Article of the Apostles Creed In the second article of the Apostles Creed, our confession is focused on Jesus, whose coming we await. We speak the words of the creed, followed by the What does this mean? section from the Small Catechism of Dr. Martin Luther. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from all eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, 8

just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. SERMON HYMN O Bride of Christ, Rejoice LW 20 SERMON OFFERTORY LW page 175 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me, Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen PRAYER OF THE CHURCH LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. HYMN Once He Came in Blessing LW 30 Let us pray. Blessed Lord, who has caused all Holy Scripture 9

to be written for our learning, grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by the patience and comfort of Your holy Word we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life which You have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. BENEDICTION The Lord bless you and keep you The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you, The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen, Amen, Amen. Wednesday Advent Services This coming Wednesday s theme is Jesus, the Lamb of God, Shows Us the Father s Heart. This Advent series provides three catechetical sermons focusing on the First Article of the Apostles Creed and the explanation by Martin Luther as found in the Small Catechism, Each service is based on a familiar psalm and one part of Luther s explanation of the First Article. Though these services are designed to teach the people of 11

God, they have as their focus, the central doctrine of the Christian faith that is, justification by grace through faith. To give unity to the entire series, it is structured as three major divisions explicating one central Advent theme. While each service is related to the other two, each could be used independently of the others. Service will be held Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM. Please note - there will not be a 10:00 AM service. The Senior Citizens of our congregation want to sincerely thank all the youth and families who helped prepare and serve the Senior Citizens Christmas dinner last Sunday.
