Mock Fmilg Historin A Cleringhouse for Mock, Muck, Muk,If,ck, Mg fmilies Volume lx' No.4 t Otn Annul Mock Fmily Historin Conference Frnkfort, Kentucky By Ron Moore nd Brbr Dittig Mock Fmily Historin members, spouses nd fmilies gthered t Frnkforfs Holidy Inn Cpitl Plz Hotel to celebrte the l0thyer of the Mock Fmily Conference. The hotel ws within wlking distnce to the beutiful new Kentucky Historicl Society nd Librry where those erly comens spent time reserching. Fridy, Ron Moore, Brbr Dittig nd husbnd, Iim visited the courthouse in Pris, Bourbon Co, KY where mny records of the descendnts of Rudolph nd Ctherine Mock re housed. Ruddells Mills is short distnce from Pris. We stopped t the cemetery nd were dismyed t its condition. Muny stones pper to be missing nd it is very overgrown with high grss nd weeds. From there we drove out the Shwhn-Ruddles Mills Rod to gin look for the Rudolph Mock house. In L995 my husbnd, Jim nd I were in Ruddell's Mills nd found wht we thought ws the Rudolph Mock house. The MFH Vol. tv, #4 hs picture tht we took. Ii's ierrific picture, but NOT P.udclph's house! The descriptionnd mp tht we found t the court house in Pris vrified tht the Mock house ws stone, with lrge end chimneys. The true site is locted on the dioining property which is found between Stoner Creek nd Licking run. We were ble to tlk with mn whose prop erty ioins one side of wht ws the Mock property. We wlked cross field nd got s dose s we could to the house, but were disppointed tht we couldn't get doser. The house is now thought to be over 200 yers old. If s not occupied nd is covered with vines. Fridy evening ws the officil opening of the conference with welcome reception held in the Hospitlity Suite of the Mock Fmily Historin. This ws good chnce for new members to meet the rest of the group to compre their own Mock/ Muck reserch. Sturdy morning the group ws treted to tlk by Sndi Adkinson of the Kentucky Secretry of Stte Office. Sndi gve n interesting nd very knowledgeble slide presenttion on the process of how individuls obtined lnd wrrnts which my hve eventully ended up with lnd ptent. Obviously Sndi hd done her homework on the Mocks s she illustrted with exmples of Rndolph Mock in Mercer County, KY nd Muks in Crter County, KY. Fll2000 The fternoon session ws given by Ron Brynt from the Kentucky Archives Office who gve n excellent presenttion on the History of Kentucky. Hisbelief is ththistory is ordinrily very boring subject but with stories it comes to life. His presenttion showed tht he ws n rtist in mking history n interesting topic. Robert PdgeQ member of the Kentucky Genelogicl Society, gve short presenttion bout the society nd ifs publiction the "Bluegrss Roots" To join, see their Home Pge t http;/ /members.ol.com/ bdhrney2 orwrite to KGS, POBox 153, Frnkfort, KY 40602. Sturdy evening the trditionl "Mock Supper" ws held in privte diningroomtthe hotel. Ourguests were RonBrynt nd Robert Pdgett. Robert ws very helpful in suggesting spekers for our conference. Following dinneq, we were gin fvored by nother tlk by Ron Brynt. His topic ws "Flights nd Fncy of Genelogicl Reserch" nd ws highly interesting topic illustrted with mny personl experiences he hs collected through the yers. One ws the story bout very proud elderly ldy from the South who clled himnd sid thtshe wnted to put up specil memoril for her ncestor who hd served s Confederte in the Civil Wr. Mr Brynt stted tht he did the necessry reserch nd found out tht her mn hd indeed served in the Civil Wq but ws in the Union rmy nd not with the Confedercy. ln dditiory he ws chrged with going AWOL. He ws reluctnt to cll her right wy nd she eventully clled him nd lthough he ws not nxious to spek with her, he went hed nd reluctntly did so. After he explined to this very proper southern ldy bout his findings, there ws long puse nd then it ws followed by some of the most fowl lnguge nd nmes he hd ever been clled nd then she promptly hung up. Our business meeting ws held Sundy morning. Members gthered to discuss more bout plns for the future of the Mock Fmily Historin. Severl decisions were reched. One ws tht next yers conference u'ill

Chrles mrried Srh Fisher. Onyour website I red bout the recent conference nd the visit to the old home site. You my be interested in the little bit I know bout it. 1n1979 my siste4 Nuncy Hutsorg visited the old stone house where Rudolph nd Mrgret Mock lived in Bourbon County nd visited with the elderly womn who lived on the frm t tht time. She sid her records indicted the Mock fmily bought the frm in 1788 nd then mentioned the fmily grveyrd locted on the frm. Four photogrphs were tken by my sister on 18 Iult979 nd she hs given me permissionto send them to you for inclusion in the MFH. The stone house, built sometime fter L788 on prcperty belonging to Rudolph nd Ctherine Mock. The min floor of the house ws one lrge room with fireplces on ech end of the room. There were two rifle ports built into ech end of the ttic. According to my siste{, the ceiling bems in the ttic were t lest four inches thick nd the wlls of the house were t lest two feet thick. It ws in the shde nd very overgrown with brush nd trees so my sister wsn't ble to get very cler picture of it. The cemetery which ws between the house nd the riveq, ws locted in corner of the psture.. There were plin stones for mrkers with no owiting on them. As frs the womnwho lived onthe frmin 1.979knew, there hd never been nything written on the stones. She hd lived on the frrr since she ws liftle girl, which ws probbly in the erly 1900's. Most of the stones hd beeii knocked overby cttle or destroyed over the yers, but there were few still upright nd mny of them hd been moved round nd were no longerinplce tomrk the grves. It is not known which fmily members were buried in the cemetery but the womn who lived on the frmthought tht Rudolph Mocknd hiswife wereburied there. The picture of the cemery on the Mock fmily propertyws too drk to reproduce. I hve quite bit of informtion on Chrles nd Srh (Fisher) Mock nd their children nd some informtion on Rudolph nd Mrgret nd their children. All of his childrery s you list, were born in nd round Dvidson County, North Crolin with the lst one born in 1834. The fmily heded by Dvid Mock is listed in the 1840 census in Lfyette County, MO. nd he helped strt Methodist Church t Freedom, MO. in bout 1842 ccording to the publishedhistory oflfgette Couniy. Dvid nd Elizbeth nd severl of their children re buried in couple of cemeteries round this generl re in Missouri. It is possible tht the "born in Lfyette County, Mo." should hve been listed s died in l"fyefte County, Mo. which would be correct. The other correction I would like to mke is to the entry of Philip Mock, Dvid's fther. He is nr:t buried in Midwy cemetery. He is buried on n now overgrown piece of wooded lnd tht seems to hve been prt the Old Mock Home plce onabbotfs Creek. His is the only tombstone remining s it is propped ginst nd hs grown into smll cedr tree. His sopstone tombstone sttes,,here lise the _se of philip Mock who ws born the 29 de October 1752nd deprted this life the 8 of August 1821. Aged 68y 9m 10d". You cn see number of stones mrking the plce where others re buried, but no nmes remin. It would be ssumed tht his wife(s) re buried there lso since, two died before he did. The cemetery cn't be seen from the rod (it is off frmed fields) nd is on the property of Tommy Bothmmer t3s4moore Rod less thn qurter mile off Abbotfs Creek Rod, in wht is now, High Point, NC. The re is rpidly becoming n upscle bedroom community of High Point with Country Club t the intersection of Abbott's Creek nd Moore Rod. I hve included copy of the listing of the genelogicl society tht strted us in the direction of finding the cemetery. We found it only with the help of neighboring frmer who put us in his cr nd bumped us cross plowed fields s he hd grown up in the rend knewwhtwe were looking for. I m relly concerned tht the lnd tht this cemetery sits upon will shortly be sold for new housing. It is not mrked, fenced or in ny wy identified. Is there some wy tht we cn mke sure tht this cemetery will be preserved? Do you know if the lws of North Crolin tht would prevent this from hppening? Any suggestions? The other informtion tht I found during my reserch, ws listed in the Deed Book of Dvidson County on pge 372. It reds to me tht Hnnh Wlk Mock mrried fohn Clodfelter fter the deth of Philip in 1821. It sttes: "25 Feb. 7825 Hnnh Clodfelter nd hr husbnd, lohn Clodfelter, Dower lnd of Hnnh, rherc Philip Mock, Sn dieil, Finl ilioision of Philip Mock, Sr,'s lnd Thoms Hmpton nd uife Smh, Petet Tise nd zife Ctherine, Moses Wilborn nd wife, Mrgret, Solomon Mock nd the heits t lw of Mry Enocks, dec'd. ll greed to py proportionte prt ofthe sum donced to the sid lohn nd Hnnh Clodfeltet lor their right in the dozon lnds. His sister is the only remining sibling live nd she is 97 yers old. Volume lx No.4. Fll2000 MockFmily Historin 49 Mock Discussion Group Questions & Answers I m reserching the surnme Meck out of Oley, Exeter nd Reding in Berks Co. P. I swyour post of 1n27,L996 where you indicted tht Dr Mnn's records indictes tht Jcob nd Philip Mock werc sons of John Mck of Berks Co. whose will ws dted 15Apn11782 nd proven 2Oct1784 t Reding, (Book B, p. 105). He left bequests to five sons, George, Theobold Philip, Gottlieb nd lcob nd wife Judith. udith ws evidently his second wife. Her will dted 1&Nov 1784 nd, proven 27 Od 1795 Berks. Co. BK 8,P.39 left bequests to her son Henry Ripple nd dughterjudith wife of Peter Lehmn. Her buril records (nd lso his) re in the books of (possibly Hunsheim) Wurtenbery, Germny, dughter of Melchior Weber. Her first husbnd ws Christin Repple (Ripple), potter. Dr. Mnn indictes tht the bove ws fiom Fmily Records, Book B, pp 213-218 compiled by Dr. A. Fries, Morvin Archives, copied mnuscript. you go on to sy tht there is more informtion on the fmily of John Mck/Mock of Berks Co. P. in the Mock Fmily Historin. Now to my question I hve Dewlt/ Dewld Theobold Meck - who ws in the Reding ne round the yer 1800. His fther is listed s jcob Meck frmer from Oley. Dewlt ortheobold Meck died s result of wounds recieved in the wr of 1812. Doyou hve ny further informtion onyourtheobold Mock which we cn compre. I m wre tht the nmes Mock, Mck nd Meck were sometimes interchngeble when these fmilies cme from Germny. Now even more interesting I m from the line of Jcob Meck out of Oley, nd mrried in Exeter in 1788 to Mrgret Nies or Fies. I m trying my drndest to trck Jcob bck to his fmily nd suspect thttheobold Meck nd he my be relted. Any ides would be pprecited.. JoIm McClure lmcc449258@rclcom To John from Ron Moore, Mock Gen-L modertor nd list owner Thnk you for the messge bout fohnnes Mock nd your Meck fmily of Oley,Berks Co, PA. You re right, we believe tht Meck is surnme which is relted to Mock. Much of the informtion we hve on the descendnts of Johnnes Mock who died in Reding, Berks Co, PArr.l7%comes from erly work done by Mock reserchers probbly in the 1930s nd 1940's nd unlortuntely is not well documented. As you hve no doubt red, there were supposed to hve been three brothers who immigrted on the Ship St.Arulrl from Rotterdm, nmed Johry Peter Mck in 1752, nd third brother by the nme of Alexnder Mck nd they ll went to North Crolin. (if you hven't herd this story forget bout it becuse it lcks documenttion). There seems to be no question there ws fohn nd Pieter Mck/Mock who cme to Americ lll.l752 on the sme ship but their identity is in question s to exctly who they were nd where they ended up. I personlly hve serched extensively forjohn nd Alexnder Mock or Mck in erly North Crolin records but m not convinced tht either one of them ever went to North Crolin. There is john Mock in the 1790 US Census of Rown County, but he ppers on the sme census pge s Peter Mock, Sr. Peter who hd three known sons by the nme of Peter Mock, 1 Henry Mock nd John Mock plus mybe some mot not listed here.. lnterestingly, the Dywlt Muk in the 1790 US Census spelled his nme s "Muk'. Also, there ws much erlier Dwult Mock in the 1755 nd 1760 titheble lists of Rown County, NC which could not fit with the Devult Mock who ws mrried to Phebe Clinnrd nd thought to be born in 1755. There is good evidence tht the erly Phillip nd Dewlt Mock in Rown County, were relted since they both lived ner ech other on Abbotts Creek. There is lso firly good indirect evidence tht Gottlieb Mock ws lso relted since he mrried his second wife who ws dughter of fcob Brummell who lso ws neighbor living on Abbotts Creek in Rown Co, NQ but it is believed Gottlieb didn't sty there long enough to be enumerted in ny North Crolin census records. It is believed tht this Gottlieb eventully moved on to Sevier Co, TN nd either he or his son Philip Mock eventully went to Arknss. This Gottlieb Mock hs been extensively studied by nother Mock reserche4 jp Mock. There is lso high degree of suspicion tht Jcob Mock in erly North Crolin Rown County ws lso brother. As fr s George Mock is concerned, I m not t ll certin tht he ended up in North Crolin lthough there ws George Mock in erty North Crolin records. Some hve questioned if he my hve gone to South Crolin. (I know of no proof for this) I believe there is firly good circumstntil evidence tht these Mocks noted bove were indeed sons of fohnnes Mck/Mock who died in Reding Berks County, PA since there re no others tht I know of who would fit. Mny in erly North Crolin of course cme from sttes like Pennsylvni nd Virgini. It would be nice to locte some probte records or other evidence these were indeed his sons in North Crolin. ln 7996,I posted messge to MOCK-GEN-L which I will summrize here. This record pertined to Theobold Mock of Berks County, PA nd he cquired lnd inbedford Mnnerwhichl presume my hve been in Bedford County, PA. This lnd ws in n re clled the Brethren Vlley Township. This ws dted 6 Sep 1773 nd signed by Thoms Penn, thought to be the brother of Willim Penn. This document hd the signture of this Theobold Mock. There were couple of conflicts here with evidence lredv known bout the Theobold

50 Mock Fmily Historin Volume lx No.4. Fll 20fl) Moch nd one is tht he ws thought to hve gone to North Crolin nd the other ws tht his fmily re thought to hve been Luthern or Reformed nd not Brethren. These re relly minor conflicts since they might be explined. However, lter messge from MFH membeq, Steve Lpp indicted this re ws clled Brothers Vlley nd not Brethren Vlley so this my or my not hve hd nything to do with the Brethren Church. Steve hs indicted tht this region is now in Sumner Co, PA. I wsn't wre before your messge tht your Jcob Meck of Berkes County, Oley Township hd son by the nme of Theobold, nd it just occurred to me tht mybe yours would fit with thistheobold Mockfound in the Brethren Vlley Township n 1773? Howeveq, it doesn't seem likely if your Jcob Meck ws not mrried until 1788. Could this hve been second mrrige? Also, the dte of birth of this Devult Mock in Rown County, NC who ws mrried to Phoebe Clinnrd ws 19 Feb 1755. Steve Lpp lso pointed out tht this Devult Mock ws in Rown County, NC before 1773bsed on lnd trnsction then in 1773 where he sold lnd to Thoms Perkins nd this is recorded in Book 13, Pge 27 of Rown County Deeds. So he ws no doubt in North Crolin some time before 1773 nd, there re multiple other lnd trnsctions subsequent to this to indicte tht he didn't move wy. There is still lot of reserch tht needs to be done on these vrious fmilies nd there r'e mny nclw whb clim origin from this johnnes Mck who died in Berks County in17%. There hve been rtides published in the Mock Fmily Historin over the pst ten yers relting to this Johnnes nd udith Mck/Mock of Berks County, PA. Volume I included summries of some erly lnd records. While this is secondry sour'ce, there were severl mentions of Theobld Mock. Theobldt Mock ws listed s hving 322 cres on brnch of Middle CreekinTurkeyfootTwp, Bedford County tht ws wrrnted in LZ3 nd survey&n1774. Of even greter interest, ws summry of 15 My 7795 deed for ohn Kooser's lnd in Milford Township, Somerset County tht ws djcent to the lnd of Theobld Mock mong others. This is likely the originl lnd wrrnted in 1773 s Turkeyfoot Township ws formed from Brothers Vlley Township nd Milford Township ws formed out of Turkeyfoot Township in 1780. These re ll townships in present dy Somerset County which ws tken from Bedford County in 1795. The 1795 deed certinly implies tht Theobld still is live nd the owner of this lnd t tht time. This my or my not be ccurte nd of course he my not hve lived on the lnd, but ifs n intriguing thought nonetheless. This book lso included some tx lists including the 1783 federl supply tx list nd there ws no Theobld Mock lthough there ws Peter Mock with 300 cres in Milford Township who ws listed s non resident property holder. I believe some people hve suggested tht this is one of the Peter Mocks from Bedford County, but ldonltknow the documenttionof tht sttement. I don t know if nyone would confuse the nmes Peter nd Theobld or if there would be reltionship between the two but it is the sme township nd the pproximte crege.
