Welcome to the Jesus n Me lesson Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet Squeaky Clean! This Jesus n Me lesson is packed with activities and crafts to make it fun for everyone. A Talk Time is included to help children understand the significance of the Bible story; and step-by-step instructions are included to make preparation easy and quick for you. I hope you are greatly blessed in using these resources, and pray that the children in your care come to know the Lord Jesus Christ on a personal level. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact My Bible Crafts: http://mybiblecrafts.com/contactmybiblecrafts.html How to Use the Jesus n Me Lessons Save the two PDF files that are attached to the email (a black-and-white file and a color file) to your computer. You are also permitted, and encouraged, to make one backup copy onto an external drive or thumb drive (usb flash drive). Saving Tips: You can skip the color-illustrated pictures, and just use black-and-white pictures (and color them yourself or have teens help). To save even more on printing, use a laser jet printer, instead of an inkjet printer for the black-and-white pages; then print the color-illustrated pictures using a color Inkjet printer. Copy the pictures using a black and white, or color photocopier, respectively. (I would advise against using pages printed from an inkjet printer for children's crafts, as these inks can come off. The chemicals in the inks may pose a safety concern. Make copies that are to be used for children's crafts on a copy machine instead). Copyright Info: These resources are not permitted to be shared (in person or electronically), uploaded to any website or blog, copied for any uses other than for one local preschool or one local church, nor are they to be distributed, nor sold. Refer to the full terms and conditions of use for allowable uses of the My Bible Crafts resources: http://mybiblecrafts.com/terms/mybiblecrafts-terms-and-conditions.html Safety Tips For Using Crafts With Young Children Keep scissors out of the reach of young children. Keep all glue caps, marker caps and other small items out of reach of children, age 3 or under, as they are a choking hazard. Use nontoxic washable markers only. Watch young children when they are using crayons to be sure they don't put them into their mouths. Have an emergency plan in place in case of injury, ie, someone trained in First Aid procedures, emergency phone numbers on hand, etc. This is not a complete list of safety tips. Consult safety or First Aid manuals for specifics. Intro: Have you ever been at home when a messy job needs to be done, but nobody wants to do it Like when no one takes out the trash, and the trash spills over and makes a big mess? Or maybe someone walks in the house after being outside on a muddy day, and then there are muddy footprints all over. Today we re going to hear a Bible story about how Jesus did a job that no one else wanted to do. Just remember, Bible stories are true stories. They re not made up. They really happened! (Hold up Matthew). This is Matthew. He s dressed like the children who lived during Bible Times. He s here to help me tell the story and explain things. Can you say Hi to Matthew? (Encourage children to say, Hi Matthew. ) Matthew: Hi everyone! I m happy to be here to help teach the lesson. Um um What is it Matthew? Matthew: Well I just want to say um excuse me if my feet are a little dirty. I had to walk here on the dusty roads. That s ok. We ll get you all cleaned up. (Take dry washcloth and wipe the dirt off his feet.) Matthew: Thank you! Now I feel better! You look great too. Ok. Let s begin the story: The disciples had spent three years with Jesus. They walked with him, and talked with him. They saw Jesus do many miracles, like healing sick people and making blind people see! They knew Jesus could do things we can t do. He even calmed the wind and waves during a storm! They knew he

Squeaky Clean, p. 2 was sent from God in heaven! They really thought a lot of Jesus. They followed him wherever he went. They wanted to be just like him, so they copied the things he did. The disciples also loved to listen to Jesus teach! He spoke the very words of God. And, Jesus patiently taught them how to live, and how to love. Bible Kid Puppet: And lots of time, he showed them, up close, how to love! That s right! Jesus showed them how to love each other by loving them better than anyone else ever had! Jesus loved them perfectly! But even after spending all that time with Jesus, the disciples still weren t really good at loving each other. They needed to learn some of Jesus attitudes. (Picture: Dirty feet). Do you know how we just washed Matthew s feet off? The job of washing feet needed to be done often in Bible Times. People s feet got dirty because they had to walk everywhere they went on dirt roads! Only a few people had a donkey or camel to ride. They didn t have cars like we do now either. Usually the servant of the house would do the job of washing the feet of everyone who came to visit. Matthew: What s a servant? A servant is someone who got paid to help with the work that needed to be done around the house. Matthew: Did they have to pay someone to do the job of washing feet because nobody wanted to do it? That s right. Here s what happened: Jesus and his disciples were about to have their very last supper together. They had just come in from outside, after waking on the dusty roads. Let s pretend we re walking with them. (Make stomping sounds with your feet). One by one, as they entered the house, they walked over to the dinner table. (Make stomping sounds again). Stomp, stomp, stomp! Do you think dirt got all over the floor? I do too. I bet dust was flying everywhere! The disciples sat down at the dinner table, and waited for someone to get up and wash their feet for them. But where was the servant? When they saw that there was no servant they waited and waited and waited some more. Who would do the servant s job of washing everyone s feet? Just then, Jesus got up from the table! (Gasp). He took off his outer clothes and wrapped a towel around his waist. Everyone was very quiet. They just watched Jesus, scratching their heads. They didn t understand what Jesus was doing. Jesus patiently filled a tub with warm water. (Fill your tub with water). I think he probably added some nice-smelling soap. (Add liquid soap). I wonder if it made bubbles? (Blow bubbles a couple times and let children catch them. Tell children you ll blow more bubbles later for them). Then Jesus began to wash the disciples feet, one by one. Scrub, scrub. Scrub, scrub. (Pretend to scrub). Then Jesus gently dried their feet with the towel. Pat, pat. Pat, pat. (Pretend to dry). (Bring dolls over). Let s pretend that we re there with Jesus, and these dolls are the disciples. Look how dirty their feet are! They need their feet washed. Who wants to help me? It will be fun! (Bring tub of soapy water to the table. Show children how to take off

Squeaky Clean, p. 3 the dolls sandals. Let them take turns washing and drying the dolls feet. Encourage children and praise their efforts.) Thanks for helping! You all did a great job! (Put tub up out of reach, and dry children s hands). Matthew: Let s continue with the story: Jesus was still washing the disciples feet. When Jesus came to Peter, Peter said, You will never wash my feet! But Jesus explained, You don t understand what I m doing, but later you will. Then Peter said, If you wash my feet, then wash my face and hands too! (Point to face and hold up your hands). Matthew: Peter was being a smarty pants! Yes, but Jesus was patient. He explained to Peter that only his feet were dirty, so that s all that needed to be washed. Matthew: Now they were squeaky clean! Yes, squeaky clean. Jesus was showing his disciples that, even though he was their Teacher and Lord, he chose to do the job that a servant would do, to show his disciples that he loved them. He said even the greatest of them should be willing to serve the others. He explained that usually the older ones tell the younger ones what to do. But Jesus didn t want us to have that attitude. He wants us to help each other, no matter who we are. Matthew: Wow! Jesus was the greatest one; and he had the power to tell others what to do. He could do anything he wanted! But, instead he did the servant s job! (Picture: Clean Feet). That s right. Jesus was amazing! He was willing to forget about his greatness in order to care for his disciples. He could have told his disciples to wash his feet; instead he washed their feet. Here s what Jesus said: (Read John 13:12-15). Matthew: So should we get some soap and washcloth, and wash each other s feet? I think Jesus was just giving us one example. Here s another way Jesus explained it: (Read John 15:12). I think Jesus wants us to be willing to do whatever needs to be done, just because we love him, and because we love people too. Matthew: I love Jesus, and I want to love people like Jesus did! I do too! Let s pray and ask God to help us obey his command to love each other. Prayer Time: (Say a simple prayer and then let children take turns praying). Transition: Let s have snack now and then we ll talk some more. Matthew: Yippee! I love learning about Jesus!

Squeaky Clean, p. 4 Talk Time Give children a chance to answer the questions. Then add some of your own answers. These are just possible answers. Can you think of some yucky jobs that you don t like to do? Dishes, garbage, cleaning up a sticky mess. Are you too great to do those jobs? Are you too smart to do those jobs? No. If Jesus was willing to do those kinds of jobs, and he is the greatest of all, then we are not too good to do those jobs, either. What are some of the excuses someone might make when they don t want to do something? It s not my turn. I don t want to get my hands dirty. Did Jesus have that attitude? No. Jesus was willing to do whatever needed to be done. What are some ways we can love each other in our class? Be friendly. Share our toys. Help clean up. How can we copy Jesus, and show love to others at home? Help mom and Dad clean the house. Help your brother make sandwiches. Help brush your sister s hair. Give someone a hug when they look like they need it. Feed the cat. Teach your little brother or sister the ABCs. Take some groceries to a family if the mommy or daddy lost their job. Those are all very great answers! Thank you all for sharing. Transition: Now we have some fun activities and crafts to do!
