The Good News from SJB Principal s Weekly Letter Mark Your Calendar Ash Wednesday All School Mass March 1 (10:30am) JDCHS Main Gym End of 3rd Quarter March 9 No School - Diocesan Employee Day March 10 Spring Break March 13-17 The season of Lent begins tomorrow with Ash Wednesday. The Lenten season, a time to prepare our hearts for Jesus Resurrection on Easter, is forty (40) days long, not including Sundays. The number 40 is significant with respect to preparation. Moses stayed on Mount Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights without eating any food or drinking any water to prepare to receive the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28), Elijah walked 40 days and 40 nights to Mount Sinai (1 Kings 19:8), and most importantly, Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days and 40 nights in the desert before He began His public ministry (Matthew 4:2). The Lenten pillar of fasting has changed with time, and today s present fasting and abstinence laws are simple: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics, ages 18-59, fast (have only one full meal and smaller snacks to keep up one s strength) and abstain from meat. On the other Fridays of Lent, Catholics from age 14 onwards abstain from meat. We are also encouraged to give up something for Lent as a sacrifice. Tomorrow s campus Mass begins at 10:30am in the JDCHS gymnasium. Thank you, thank you to everyone who attended, supported and/or volunteered at Saturday s Mardi Gras! It was a spectacular event, enjoyed by all. Thank you as well to Mark Schwerer Bear Mountain Studio for capturing the event! Congratulations to the following opportunity ticket winners: Front Row Seating for 8 th Grade Graduation: Fiona Harris Parking Spot: Sally Becker Tuition: Brian & KrisDee Ortega and to the students who will be joining their classmates for this year s Teacher Activities: PreKindergarten: Ryken Thalman Kindergarten: Isaac Garcia 1 st Grade: Caroline Ridings 2 nd Grade: Isabelle Garcia 3 rd Grade: Zach Apgar 4 th Grade: Hayden Mezenen 5 th Grade: Kenzie Hansen

The Great Kindness Challenge concluded today, as the students Rode the Kindness Wave wore beach/surf attire and heard the simple message: Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible. Tuesday, March 7: Oh, the Places You ll Go!: Students are invited to wear a shirt from their favorite place to visit with nonuniform bottoms. Wednesday, March 8: Cat in the Hat: Students may wear a hat with their formal uniform. Each Wednesday, all of Saint John the Baptist Elementary administrators, teachers, students everyone drops everything and reads from 8:10-8:30am. As Dr. Seuss said, The more you read, the more you know and the more you know, the more places you ll go! Next week, March 6-9, all students, Grades 1-5, will complete the STAR Math & Reading assessments. The end of 3 rd Quarter is next Thursday, March 9, and there s no school on Friday, March 10 due to a Diocesan Employee Day and the week of March 13 for Spring Break. School resumes on Monday, March 20. Please keep Reverend Bishop Oscar Solis in your prayers. Bishop Solis will be installed as the 10 th Bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City next Tuesday, March 7. The Installation Mass (2:00pm) will be live-streamed, and the link will be available from the Diocesan website -www.dioslc.org. The Saint Patrick s Day Parade will be Saturday, March 18, but due to Spring Break and the Holy Spirit Basketball Tournament, Saint John the Baptist Catholic Schools will not have an entry this year. The Catholic Schools Office, however, has an entry Utah Catholic Schools for families to walk in. If your family is planning to participate in the parade, please let me know, as each school has been asked to provide a sign to be carried in the entry. (I will be at the Holy Spirit Basketball Tournament.) I will be off campus tomorrow afternoon (March 1) through next Monday, March 6. In Faith, Nikki Ward, Principal Fourth Grade Mardi Gras Parade
