The Good News from SJB Principal s Weekly Letter Mark Your Calendar Ash Wednesday All School Mass March 1 (10:30am) JDCHS Main Gym End of 3rd Quarter March 9 No School - Diocesan Employee Day March 10 Spring Break March 13-17 The season of Lent begins tomorrow with Ash Wednesday. The Lenten season, a time to prepare our hearts for Jesus Resurrection on Easter, is forty (40) days long, not including Sundays. The number 40 is significant with respect to preparation. Moses stayed on Mount Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights without eating any food or drinking any water to prepare to receive the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28), Elijah walked 40 days and 40 nights to Mount Sinai (1 Kings 19:8), and most importantly, Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days and 40 nights in the desert before He began His public ministry (Matthew 4:2). The Lenten pillar of fasting has changed with time, and today s present fasting and abstinence laws are simple: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics, ages 18-59, fast (have only one full meal and smaller snacks to keep up one s strength) and abstain from meat. On the other Fridays of Lent, Catholics from age 14 onwards abstain from meat. We are also encouraged to give up something for Lent as a sacrifice. Tomorrow s campus Mass begins at 10:30am in the JDCHS gymnasium. Thank you, thank you to everyone who attended, supported and/or volunteered at Saturday s Mardi Gras!
