SENTENCE 1 John 15.16 Jesus said, You did not choose me, but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit. MASS READINGS Please use these readings in conjunction with the coloured service booklet. Breakfast is served after the 7.30am Eucharist today. Refreshments are served after the 9.00am Sung Eucharist and the 10.30am Solemn High Mass, all in the Parish Hall. All are welcome. If you are a visitor please ask a sidesperson for directions. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm. COLLECT Loving God, your Son has chosen us and called us to be his friends: give us grace to keep his commandments, to love one another, and to bear fruit which will abide; through him who is the true vine, the source of all our life, Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING Acts 10.44-48 While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, Can anyone withhold the water for baptising these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? So he ordered them to be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 98 1. O sing to the Lord a new song: for he has done marvellous things; 2. His right hand and his holy arm: they have got him the victory. 3. The Lord has made known his salvation: he has revealed his just deliverance in the sight of the nations. 4. He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness towards the house of Israel: and all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 5. Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth: break into singing and make melody. 6. Make melody to the Lord upon the harp: upon the harp and with the sounds of praise. 7. With trumpets and with horns: cry out in triumph before the Lord, the king. 8. Let the sea roar, and all that fills it: the good earth and those who live upon it. 9. Let the rivers clap their hands: and let the mountains ring out together before the Lord; 10. For he comes to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity. Railway Square, Sydney 3
SECOND READING 1 John 5.1-12 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. There are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three agree. If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. MASS READINGS GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia. All who love me will keep my words, and my Father will love them and we will come to them. Alleluia. GOSPEL John 15.9-17 The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 4 Railway Square, Sydney
OFFERTORY SENTENCE O bless our God, you peoples: and cause his praises to re-sound; who has led our souls in life, who has not suffered our feet to slip. Alleluia. MASS READINGS COMMUNION SENTENCE If you love me, keep my commandments, says the Lord. The Father will send you the Holy Spirit to be with you for ever. Alleluia. COMMUNION MOTET Ubi caritas Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exsultemus et in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Amen. Where charity and love are, there is God. The love of Christ has brought us together into one flock. Let us rejoice and let us be glad in that love. Let us fear and love the living God; and let us love one another from a pure heart. Amen. Railway Square, Sydney 5

Organ Scholar At the end of June Joshua Ryan will conclude his term as Organ Scholar. Joshua has made an extraordinary contribution to the musical life of the parish during the last three years. We will thank Joshua more formally in the coming months. The position of Organ Scholar will therefore soon become vacant. A detailed job description is available from the Parish Office or the Director of Music. Applications close on Friday 18 May. SUNDAY NOTICES Lectio Divina (Sacred Reading) Lectio Divina is a centuries-old tradition of slow, reflective reading of scripture. The group meets each Thursday in May between 1-2pm in a chapel in St James Crypt. It is open to all and is free to attend. The Sessions will be led by Ann Bergman and Penny Sturrock, both Benedictine Oblates of the Australian Christian Meditation Community, in conjunction with Christopher Waterhouse, Director of the St James Institute. Restoration Appeal The Christ Church St Laurence restoration project will begin during 2018, with most of the work expected to occur during 2019. As the restoration unfolds through several phases, following on from our successful stained-glass restoration, this project and its funding will be with us for 2-3 years. The first phase will see the installation of a heating and cooling system, using air displacement through floor vents. Sophisticated in design, unobtrusive in appearance, and economical in operation, this system meets our needs ideally. The character of our building nevertheless makes it expensive to install. Please consider how you can play your part in restoring and preserving this extraordinary tradition. Donations to our Restoration Fund in association with the National Trust are tax deductible. For details on how to donate, please see page 7. Sydney Bach Society During 2018 there will be a series of midday concerts provided the Sydney Bach Society. The recitals will be featuring a range of music by J S Bach. Admission is by note donation. The next recital will be at 12noon on Thursday 10 May. For details, see page 7. Asylum Seekers Centre Please remember to support the collection of groceries for the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown. The basket & a list of suitable groceries is available at the West Door. 6 Railway Square, Sydney
