Sycamine versus sycamore Sycamore was a mulberry tree (sycamoron) and it produced sweet figs. Preferred by the rich. Zacchaeus climbed such a tree to see Jesus. Sycamine trees grew to roughly the same height as a mustard tree, with deep roots and impervious to drought. Its wood was used for caskets. Its fig had to be eaten bit by bit, because it was bitter. It needed to be consumed gradually, and was affordable to the poor.
