2017-2018 PARISH RELIGION PROGRAM and CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD SESSION DESCRIPTIONS, INFORMATION, AND REGISTRATION The Parish Religion Program (PRP) at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish provides faith formation for children in grades 1-8 who attend public schools. The Parish Religion Program includes session options during the summer as well as the academic year; families choose the option that best supports parents in their role as primary influences in their children s growth in faith. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program (CGS) at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish is a dynamic Montessori pre-school program that is offered on Saturday evenings or Sunday morning/afternoon, September April of each year. Both programs are dependent upon the commitment of parents and the parish family, as partners and as members of a loving community of believers. We are a welcoming Catholic community, centered in the Eucharist, striving to live and share the Good News and grow in discipleship with the Lord.

Updated 5-18-17 As We Begin It is exciting to begin another season of partnership in the faith formation of the children of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish community! This packet is a way to familiarize each family with many details from the Evangelization and Catechesis (Formation) Office that are important to our working together. Know that the Formation staff and the many catechists and classroom aides are anxious to help in any way we can to make your child s experience as positive as possible. Call our office at 388-4093 with questions, concerns or suggestions. Please keep this packet to refer to throughout the coming year. Sunday Mass The most important aspect of our spirituality as Roman Catholics is the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist (Mass.) Parents should enroll their children in a PRP formation session that embraces rather than replaces Sunday Mass attendance for the entire family. As parents, you are the primary source of faith development for your child. Therefore, it is vital that you keep yourselves informed and growing in your faith as an adult! On-going Formation for Parents- All parents of children in any IHM PRP program are expected to participate in at least 4 ongoing adult or family formation opportunities and weekly attendance at Mass. This is strongly encouraged to assist our parents in understanding their faith in a way that will help them educate their families. Most of us have questions about our faith and often feel uncomfortable trying to explain issues of the faith to our children. This requirement allows you opportunities to educate yourself and therefore help and support your family in the Catholic faith. There are numerous opportunities throughout the year that include sacramental information and preparation, adult enrichment, family formation opportunities, and spiritual development programs. There is something for everyone to get involved in! National studies tell us there is a strong connection between families who are actively involved in the practice of their faith and the health and well-being of their children; when parents, especially fathers, are living and growing in faith, their children are less likely to become chemically dependent, experience depression, or develop negative social behaviors during their teen years and are more likely to continue to go to church through their adult years. A Few Words About Sacramental Preparation Sacramental preparation is part of the instruction included in Summer and Sunday PRP for the 2 nd and 8 th graders and is enriched by other experiences outside the classroom. Preparation for those seeking Confirmation includes participation in a PRP program, Confirmation preparation program including small faith group participation, stewardship experience, and a required overnight retreat. There is a required parent information evening for Confirmation as part of the sacramental formation process. In addition, PRP preparation for the second graders includes a required parent formation session for Reconciliation and Eucharist as part of the two mini-retreat experiences for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Questions concerning Confirmation, First Reconciliation or First Eucharist should be directed to Pete Taylor 388-4098 or the Formation Office at 388-4093.

SUMMER PRP Session Descriptions and Dates: Summer PRP: We know that this option provides a wonderful blend of prayer, instructional catechesis, sacramental celebrations, and community-building for children and parents. This program is a condensed, more intense experience of catechesis that covers the learning objectives that are standard for our archdiocese. Children who participate in Summer PRP attend ten four and one-half hour days during the summer. All parents are encouraged to help with some facet of the summer program itself and/or one of the enrichment sessions, as it is vital to the success of such a program. One of the wonderful things that happens during Summer PRP is the community of parents that develops throughout the session. Children also see their parents involved in the session and know that they care about their faith. Many of the catechists are State of Ohio certified teachers, and all teachers are either Archdiocesan certified or very near certification. This is a wonderful option for families who often find themselves with conflicts during the academic year, yet want to provide a quality educational experience in their child s formation. It is important that parents reinforce the concepts learned throughout the year, and that the family actively continues to grow in their faith through weekly participation in the Mass and at least 4 on-going faith formation enrichments. Check out our CRHP Option on the Adult and Family Participation Record page in this registration packet. This is a great opportunity to accomplish your on-going Adult and Family Formation requirements at one great event! *** ATTENDANCE POLICY Due to the intense nature of the condensed curriculum multiple absences (for any reason) including leaving early and arriving late, will necessitate a switch to another PRP session in order for the student to meet the learning objectives that are standard for our archdiocese. Students will NOT be permitted to attend multiple sessions to complete their current grade level in order to protect the integrity of the program and the learning process. Thank you for taking this into consideration. We know that you schedule your vacations, doctor s appointments, sports activities and camps around the two-week session in order to be certain that your child meets these requirements. We appreciate your cooperation and dedication. 2017 Summer PRP (grades 1-8) Dates and Times: Summer PRP I: June 5-16 (Monday Friday) Summer PRP II: June 5-16 (Monday Friday) Summer PRP III: July 24 - August 4 (Monday Friday) 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM each day 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM each evening 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM each day

SUNDAY PRP (Grades 1-8) Session Description and Dates: Sunday PRP: The Sunday program parallels closely the academic calendar, beginning in September and ending in April. The students meet with catechists on Sunday mornings for one and one-half hours each time. This program provides a rich classroom experience throughout the year. Parent participation and involvement in the Sunday program is essential to its success for the most positive experience for each child. Many of our catechists, aides, office workers and other helpers are all parent volunteers. Again, without parents who are willing to offer their gifts, the Sunday program would not be possible. Teacher input and standardized measurements indicate that Sunday PRP students are being introduced to many concepts vital to their faith formation and that the students and their families are beginning to see the relationship between what is presented in the classroom and their lived experience. Families who attend Sunday PRP must make a firm decision toward both class attendance and Sunday Mass participation. Check out our new CRHP Option on the Adult and Family Participation Record page in this registration packet. This is a great opportunity to accomplish your on-going Adult and Family Formation requirements as one great event! **** ATTENDANCE POLICY We are very excited to have your child(ren) in our Parish Religion Program (PRP). Our teachers and staff have prepared an extensive and full program that includes all the graded course of study required by the Archdiocese and so much more. Our priority is to partner with you in making sure your child gains the full benefit of learning about and growing in their faith. In order to accomplish this, our attendance policy for the Sunday PRP session requires that your student not miss more than four classes over the course of this program. Due to the importance of each lesson and our commitment that your child is well catechized, it is imperative that your child comes to all the classes. Missing more than four classes will require your child to make up the sessions in order to move to the next level or move to another PRP option before moving to the next level. 2017-2018 Sunday PRP (grades 1-8) Dates and Time: Sunday PRP (grades 1-8) September 10 April 22 (Sundays) 10:45 AM 12:15 PM NEW: ALL SUNDAY ONLY 1 st graders will move to the Big Muscle Room in Hageman Hall for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd after opening prayer in the cafeteria.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) Session Description and Dates: Young Children: Younger children are offered the opportunity to attend a Saturday evening program during the Saturday evening 5:00 PM Mass or the Sunday program during the 9:30 AM Mass/1:30 Mass in Spanish that provides catechesis throughout the year. While parents attend Mass, young children take part in a process that helps to form the children for a maturing understanding of God, themselves and others, and for participation in the liturgy. All families of young children are encouraged to participate in this program. The religious formation program offered to the Young Children ages 3, 4, 5 and Kindergarten is a hands on method referred to as The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd which is based on scripture and the liturgy of the Church. The instructional method follows the educational principles developed by Maria Montessori. The children gather in a special room (atrium) in which they ponder biblical passages which are presented to them using wood figures, a last supper table and other items used for the Eucharist. Their lessons also focus on topics such as the liturgical colors, the parables, biblical geography and prayers. Since the method is visual, interactive and very methodical, the children have an opportunity to think deeply about God s word. The children also build a relationship with God through their work in the atrium. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a very rich experience for the children as they begin to grow in love for God and the traditions of the liturgy. The program offered to the Kindergarten students is based on the CGS and includes Archdiocesan Graded Course of Study for Early Childhood and Elementary Catechetical Programs which focuses on the following topics: God is our Creator, Jesus shows us God s love and Jesus wants us to share God s love. Parents with children only enrolled in the CGS program are always welcome to do 4 on-going faith formation activities during the year! 2017-2018 Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (Age 3 Kindergarten) Saturdays or Sundays CGS (3 s- Kindergarten) September 9 -April 21 (Saturday evenings) 4:45 PM- 6:00 PM (or until Mass ends) September 10 April 22 (Sunday mornings) 9:15 AM 10:30 AM (or until Mass ends) New this year: (Sunday afternoons) 1:15-2:30 (or until Mass in Spanish ends)

Important Dates and Checklist of Forms Having read the information included in this packet, please prayerfully consider the session option that will best support your family s formation as Catholic Christian disciples, remembering that Sunday Mass must be your highest priority. Please remember that the involvement of parents is desired and expected; we ask you to choose the session that will offer the whole family the best opportunity for involvement.
