THE NAVLOG Rappahannock Assembly 1613 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus January 2012 Volume 1 Issue 7 Two-Time Winner To Be A Patriot Award 2001-2002 & 2006-2007 Faithful Navigator s Message Worthy Brothers We have finished the first half of this fraternal year with great success. Although it has been a busy six months, participating in several parades, wakes, funerals and other events, we have had great numbers of Sir Knights displaying their patriotism and dedication to the order. Now, we should look forward to ensure that the second half of the years is better and bigger. We will have another 4th Degree Exemplification in April or May and I challenge each of you to encourage your fellow council members and friends to join our ranks. We need to continually grow our Assembly and bring in new and younger members to carry on the duties as many of us are growing older and unable to perform some of the functions as we have in the past. Our Assembly Christmas Party was very well attended and after being challenged by all the good food, we all should probably be looking for a gym membership to get back in shape. Special thanks to our Worthy Captain, Loui Stevens, for working out all the details for the party and to St Jude Council for hosting it. Thanks to everyone who came to the Memorial Mass and took part in the ceremony as we honored the memory of our departed Brother Sir Knights. We should always remember our brothers in our prayers. Thanks to Fredericksburg Council for hosting the reception following the service. Please mark your calendars and join us on January 8th at the Religious Freedom Day celebration. More details of this very important event will be found in another section of the NAVLOG. I extend to you and your families a very Happy New Year and may we continue to demonstrate the Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism of our order throughout the New Year. May God bless each and every one of you. Fraternally, Bob Jankovits, Faithful Navigator 1

Sir Knight of the Month for November 2011 For the Month of November 2011, I have selected Sir Knight Harvey Yarus as the Sir Knight of the Month. Harvey is a member of Holy Trinity Council #7812 in King George where he is serving in his 3rd year as Council Treasurer. He was recently one of the coordinators for a Pot Luck Dinner fund raiser to support the Guadalupe Free Clinic which was a true success. The Guadalupe Free Clinic is one of the Council's oldest and ongoing projects and has been recognized by the Supreme Council. He organized a group of Knights to conduct Thanksgiving weekend Clean-up for the same clinic; stripping, waxing and buffing the floors to provide a clean environment for the patients. When a call went out for Sir Knights to represent our Assembly as Honor Guards for the Mass celebrated by Archbishop Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, Archbishop of the Military, Harvey was the first of his Council to volunteer. Harvey and his wife, Laura, provide maintenance for both St. Anthony's Church of King George and St Elizabeth's Church of Colonial Beach as well as their activity halls and grounds maintenance. Harvey Yarus exemplifies all that is good about the Knights of Columbus. He is always the first to volunteer or lend a hand in support of all Civic, Church and Community events. He is truly worthy of being selected as Sir Knight of the Month for November 2011. Bob Jankovits, Faithful Navigator Religious Freedom Day Celebration With Christian persecution growing in the Middle East, other parts of the world and yes here in the United States I urge everyone who is able to turn out and support the Rappahannock Assembly annual observance of Religious Freedom Day. This year we are commemorating the 235th anniversary of the drafting of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom in Fredericksburg, Va. which will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2012. The event starts with a parade, departing the Fredericksburg train station at 1:30 PM, proceeding north on Caroline Street, turning west onto Amelia Street, turning north on Washington Avenue, and stopping at the Religious Freedom Monument. The ceremony at the monument begins at 2:00 PM. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of a wreath at the monument. All parade participants should plan to arrive at the Fredericksburg train station by 1:00 PM. Questions concerning the event please contact Rick Reschick by email, rez55@cox.net, or phone at 540-368-9345. 2

Assembly Christmas Social Presentation of Sword to Assembly Friar, Rev. Don Rooney Another sincere THANK YOU to the 80 attendees at our annual Assembly Christmas Social at St. Jude s Activity Center on 21 December. A special note of thanks to all the nameless helpers who helped in so many ways to make this event memorable and successful. There was no lack of food and good will and fraternity was no stranger. Last but not least, I d like to express my special appreciation to Fr. Hudgins for making your facilities available to us and to GK Roman Marciniak and all the members (for fear of leaving someone out, I will not name them here) who gave their time and talent. (Loui Stevens, Faithful Captain) Assembly Color Corps Commander New Year s Greetings I wish a Happy New Year to all Sir Knights and look forward to another very busy and rewarding year for our Color Corps. Let s keep up the great work. December Activities In December the Color Corps activity involved an Honor Guard escort at the Mass preceding our Annual Memorial Ceremony and Honor for the Ceremony, at which we also performed a Regalia Retirement. Thanks to all Sir Knights who participated including; Joe McEuen, John Trammell, Mark Sewell, PFN, and Faithful Captain Loui Stevens in the Honor Guard, and Faithful Navigator Bob Jankovits, Wayne Cushing, Faithful Captain Loui Stevens, Frank Connors, George Johnson and Tony Spehar for the necrology. 5

Upcoming Events Memorial Mass Honor Guard SKs Sewell, McEuen, Case, Stevens, Trammell One of our major events for the year is the Religious Freedom Parade and Ceremony, which will be held on Sunday, January 8. For those who wish to participate in the parade, show time is 12:45 PM at the parking lot near the Fredericksburg Railroad Station between Caroline and Sophia Streets. Dress is full service regalia with swords including the National Combination Fourth Degree Lapel Pin. Assembly kits will be available on request. Parking will be available at the First Christian Church across from the Religious Freedom Monument on Washington Avenue. A luncheon for all parade participants will be served at the Catholic Student Center, 1614 College Avenue. Shuttle service will be provided between the Monument and the Railroad Station, and between the Monument and Catholic Student Center. Let s make this an exceptional turnout. I hope to see you there. David Case, SK, Commander Honor America Corps Commander Six members of the Corps from the Fredericksburg vicinity journeyed to Louisa on 10 December 2011, to take part in the Louisa Christmas parade. We traveled by reindeer and got to our appointed starting point well in advance; in fact we were the first marchers there. Expecting a gloomy, cold, and dreary day, we were pleasantly surprised by a rather nice day. In fact the sun came out on occasion and the day was pleasantly warm at times. Father Justin Cunningham Assembly provided the color guard and in addition to the color guard the Honor America Corps followed up carrying 12 of the official U. S. flags. The Knights of Columbus led the parade and provided a great showing for the people of the Town of Louisa. Wonderful refreshments 6

followed the parade in the activity center at St. June (Louisa) Catholic Church by Sacred Heart s Council. Our next event will include a small static display at the monument for Religious Freedom in Fredericksburg on 8 January 2012. Please consider coming out and joining in the events of the HAC this coming year. Your presence will help us swell our ranks and carry out our mission.
