Sixteen of these men are now members of our Assembly. Faithful Friar Fr. Paul Hrezo phrezo@pcj.edu 614-885-5585 This time of year is so full of honor guard events. So many parishes and Church organizations request the presence of the Fourth Degree Knights to bring a certain dignity and elevation to their special events. Honor Guard Events What are some ways you as Fourth Degree Knights can enter into those events more deeply and more prayerfully, even as (and especially as) you are involved in those special events from the perspective of the honor guard? Page 2 Volume 17, Issue 9

Let us consider a couple kinds of events to see the place for and value of an honor guard at the events. At Confirmation, we ask God to send the Holy Spirit upon the person (the confirmand ) and to enliven them with gifts of the Holy Spirit. We ask God to equip them with the gifts of the Holy Spirit that would make them better and stronger witnesses to the Church. Not unlike the step of becoming a Fourth Degree Knight, with our emphasis on patriotism in this degree, we ask the Lord to strengthen those who receive Confirmation to be stable and more dynamic members of the Church. We ask the Lord to make them more patriotic toward our ultimate homeland Heaven and that they will experience the reign of God more actively in their lives and hearts through the Church. A parallel can be made between a bishop s miter, which symbolizes the Holy Spirit descending upon him and working through him, and the chapeau with its feathers. The chapeau s feathers could likewise remind you of the presence of the Holy Spirit at a Confirmation liturgy. The sword can also remind of God s Word, the Sword of the Spirit, which we ask to touch the minds and hearts of those receiving Confirmation. COLUMBIAN MARTYRS ASSEMBLY 2380 First Communion honor guard processions can also reinforce the community dimension of Communion and its connection with deeper membership in the Church community. Being able to partake of the central community activity of the Church, the Eucharist reinforces a parallel of people identifying more completely with the community. We can welcome those receiving First Communion to walk with us in the procession toward the goal of unity with Jesus and with the community. We both receive communion (and therefore receive Jesus presence in a special way) and have communion (that is, have a moment of friendship and unity) with both God and fellow Church members. May you be praying for both the newly- Confirmed and those who will receive First Communion that they may both experience a greater patriotism toward the Kingdom of God breaking into our world and manifested through the Church. Thank you for your service, witness to and solidarity with those who are participating in sacraments of initiation during this Confirmation and First Communion season. Thank you for adding a welcome measure of dignity and elevation to events which are special to their lives. Good of the Order SK James Daugherty, SK Jim Ferega, SK Gene Gabalski, SK Carl Kidwell, SK John Lewis, SK Scott Mergenthaler, Pat Polczinski, and SK Bob Talbot. When I look for an article to publish in this section, I find many patriotic stories. I also look for something that relates to our Catholic faith or the Knights of Columbus. This month I have chosen the Four Immortal Chaplains. Their well-known story, from www.immortalchaplains.org, follows immediately after my reflections. When I read the story of the Four Immortal Chaplains, I first see the sacrifice these men gave by giving up their own lives so that others may live. They knew they would be Patriotism The Immortal Chaplains risking their own lives when they became military chaplains, but I doubt they expected to die in the manner in which they did. Upon deeper reflection, I see that these chaplains gave their lives to tend to the spiritual needs of those protecting the lives and rights of those at home. Turning the situation around, I have to ask myself if I am willing to give my life to protect the one who is tending to my spiritual needs while I am at church if the life of one of our priests is threatened. My answer is a resounding Page 3 Volume 17, Issue 9

YES. If nobody is willing to stand for the lives of our priests, who will remain to tend to our spiritual needs. --Brett Gissel, FN The Story of the Four Immortal Chaplains A convoy of three ships and three escorting Coast Guard cutters passed through "torpedo alley" some 100 miles off the coast of Greenland at about 1 a.m. on February 3, 1943. The submarine U-223 fired three torpedoes, one of which hit the midsection of the Dorchester, a U.S. Army troopship with more than 900 men on board. Ammonia and oil were everywhere in the fast-sinking vessel and upon the freezing sea. The four Chaplains on board, two Protestant pastors, a Catholic priest and a Jewish rabbi, were among the first on deck, calming the men and handing out life jackets. When they ran out, they took off their own and placed them on waiting soldiers without regard to faith or race. Approximately 18 minutes from the explosion, the ship went down. They were the last to be seen by witnesses; they were standing arm-in-arm on COLUMBIAN MARTYRS ASSEMBLY 2380 the hull of the ship, each praying in his own way for the care of the men. Almost 700 died, making it the third largest loss at sea of its kind for the United States during World War II. The Coast Guard Cutter Tampa was able to escort the other freighters to Greenland. Meanwhile the cutters Comanche and Escanaba, disobeying orders to continue the search for the German U- Boat, stopped to rescue 230 men from the frigid waters that night. The four Chaplains were Father John Washington (Catholic), Reverend Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), Rabbi Alexander Goode (Jewish) and Rev. George Fox (Methodist). These four Chaplains were later honored by the Congress and Presidents. They were recognized for their selfless acts of courage, compassion and faith. According to the First Sergeant on the ship, "They were always together, they carried their faith together." They demonstrated throughout the voyage and in their last moments, interfaith compassion in their relationship with the men and with each other. In 1960 Congress created a special Congressional Medal of Valor, never to be repeated again, and gave it to the next of kin of the "Immortal Chaplains." Faithful Captain Paul Breen, PGK kmcassoc@aol.com 614-457-3004 April Social Meeting The April social meeting will be held at the Red Lobster at 6091 Sawmill Rd., Dublin, OH 43017 (in front of the Kohl s and Dick s department stores) on Monday April 4th at 6:30 PM.
