Yatra Shashikiran Kunigal Yatra generally means Journey and one who goes on a yatra is known as a Yatri. The yatra is spiritually desirable but it is not obligatory. However in Hinduism it means pilgrimage to holy places such as confluences of sacred rivers, places associated with Hindu epics such as Mahabharata and Ramayana, places linked to Puranic stories like Samudra Manthan (churning of the great ocean) or to a sacred place or shrine of importance to a person's beliefs and faith. This exploration generally ends up with self-purification experience. One can go on a Yatra for a variety of reasons, including festivals, to perform rituals for one's ancestors or to obtain good karma or towards attaining Nirvana, Moksha or Salvation. To traditional Hindus, the journey itself is as important as the destination, and the hardships of travel serve as an act of devotion. Visiting a sacred place is believed by the pilgrim to purify the self and bring one closer to the divine. It is also said Exploring one discovers! In many Hindu scriptures like Rig-Veda wanderers are tremendously praised. Various other epics of the later age including Mahabharata, Puranas and many vernacular scriptures have also mentioned particular sites that grant boons including sound health, wealth, prosperity, progeny, and moksha (salvation). Religious scriptures also guide Hindus to perform the last rites of the deceased kin in a pilgrimage site. Tirtha-Yatra refers to a pilgrimage to a holy site, and is generally undertaken in groups. The concept of Tirtha yatra is mentioned in many scriptures like Skhanda Purana, Sthala Purana, Maha Bhagavatha, Sri Venkatachala Mahatme, Mahabharatha, Brahma Purana, Matsya Purana, and Brahmanda Purana. As mentioned in Sthala Purana, great sages in the ancient days specially used to perform meditation and other spiritual activities in these sacred places. Hence, these sites are guided by spiritual forces that can wipe out one s evil tendencies and take them towards the path of knowledge, devotion and self-realization. 'Yatra' can also describe a procession or any festival which figures a procession, such as Rath Yatra, where chariots are pulled in parade down the streets of Puri in Orissa. It is called the festival of chariots and is celebrated during the grand event when Lord Jagannatha, along with his brother Balarama and sister Subhadra, visit the Gundecha temple, few miles away in the north. Pulling the vamana or chariot with ropes is considered extremely sacred, on the other hand merely getting the sight (darshan) of vamana is also considered extremely lucky. In modern times Yatra can be used to denote marches (PadaYatra) or demonstrations, for political, environmental or societal causes. For example, Jagriti Yatra is an ambitious train journey of over 5000 miles travelling the length and breadth of Bharat, carrying 450 young minds and exposing them to individuals and enterprises that are developing unique solutions to challenges faced by Bharatiya citizens. In present times, Yatras are highly organized affairs, with specialized tourism companies catering to the need of Yatris. State governments are sometimes involved in the organization of annual yatras, stipulating numbers, registering yatris and regulating yatri traffic. The Hindu sacred month of Shravan is popular time to perform yatra in Bharat. The popular Bharat Yatra includes Volume 18 No. 3 1 December 2014 Mandir Vani Page 5

Manasarovar & Kailas Parikrama Yatra, Chardham Yatra, Chota-Chardham Yatra, Amarnath Yatra, Kashi-Rameshwar Yatra, Deoghar Yatra, Pandarapur Yatra, Tirupathi Yatra, Shiradi Yatra, Sabarimala Yatra, Hemkund Sahib Yatra, Vaishnodevi Yatra, Pashupatinath- Swayambhunath Yatra, etc., Yatra, these days are usually considered as spiritualized travel. Yatras are a growing niche of the travel market. It attracts new age believers and involves tours and travel to "spiritual hotspots" on the Earth. Destinations are often ancient sites where there is a mystery concerning their origin or purpose, such as Machu Picchu in Peru, The Pyramids of Egypt, or Stonehenge in England. Yatris see the journey as more than just tourism and take the trips in order to heal themselves and the world. Part of this may involve rituals involving, leaving their bodies, possession by spirits, and recovery of past life memories. The travel is considered by many scholars as transcendental, a life learning process or even a self-realization metaphor. The world's largest form of Yatras takes place during Kumbh Mela in Bharat and annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. North American religious tourists comprise an estimated $10 billion of the industry. Modern Yatris are more able to visit holy cities and holy sites around the world. The most famous holy cities are Varanasi, Mecca, Madinah, Armenia- Ejmiatsin, Karbala and Jerusalem. The most famous holy sites are the Kaaba, Rauza of Imam Husain at Karbala, Church of the Nativity, The Western Wall and the Brahma Temple at Pushkar. (This is compiled by ShashiKiran Kunigal, a Yatri that has completed Chardham, Manasarovar & Kailas Parikrama, Amarnath, Vaishnodevi, Kashi-Rameshwar, Tirupathi, Shiradi, Pashupatinath-Swayambhunath and Hemkund Sahib Yatras. In subsequent editions of Hindu Temple s Mandir Vani, some of his recent Yatra details will be shared). ****************************************** Hindu Temple Contact Numbers 8375 S. There is more to a Temple than you think. Sumanth Talanki, 14, a freshman in Smoky Hill High School The Hindu Temple is a central element in all aspects of everyday life in the Hindu community. To a Hindu, the temple is significant not only for its religious aspects, but also for the elements of culture, society, and education that it brings to the community. Temples are an integral part in the life of any Hindu, whether he or she lives in Northern India, Southern India, or as far away as the Rocky Mountains or even Brazil. Hindu temples have been being built in India and all over the world for thousands of years, and as is the case with any structure with such far-reaching boundaries of time and location, structural differences will exist between the temples of the different areas. It is not merely a pretty building to look at and admire, but to a Hindu, the temple is the center of intellectual, artistic, spirituality, education, and social elements of daily life. The temple "is a place where God may be approached and where divine knowledge can be discovered" (Batchelor). It is designed to dissolve the boundaries between man and divine. The Hindu temple is a special place where tradition meets astronomy. The entire universe is identified as the temple s design and actual fabric. The ground plan is the best example of how temples are perpendicular to universe. The vastu shatras, are based on design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement, spatial geometry and other aspects of architecture, which described the ground plan as a symbolic miniature representation of cosmos. It is based upon a strict grid made of squares and equilateral triangles, which are imbued with deep religious significance. The grid, usually 64 or 81 squares, is a mandala (circle), which is a model of the cosmos with each square belonging to a deity. The position of squares is according to the importance attached to each of the deities, with the square in the center representing the temple deity; the outer squares cover the gods of other ranks. The construction of the temple follows in three dimensional form exactly the pattern laid out by the mandala. To many of our brother and sister Hindus, the Hindu Temple is considered to be the divine and earthly seat of a deity. As many people agree with, Temple structures are sacred spaces where gods obtain human offerings and in which the people can be in the presence of the Divine. (Kolapen). The Hindu temple is not just a congregational structure or a prayer hall, it is the House of God, and the image inside is the soul. People can just do pujas and pray God at their own homes, yet, they prefer to do this in temples to feel the presence of the divine. This shows the same reason why we lit lamps. Light symbolizes knowledge while darkness symbolizes ignorance. A single lamp can light hundreds more, just as a man of knowledge can give knowledge to many more. The brilliance of the light does not diminish despite its repeated use to light many more lamps. Therefore, knowledge does not lessen when shared with or imparted to others. On the contrary, it increases in clarity and conviction on giving. It benefits both the obtainer and the giver. The Agamas scriptures and the Upanishad writings make several references to the correspondence of the structure of the temple to the human body and soul. One saint had said: Regard your body as the temple, your mind as the worshipper, and truth as the purity needed for worship-and perform the worship of God. This attitude toward the House of God has influenced Hindu architecture and sacred sculpture. Volume 18 No. 3 1 December 2014 Mandir Vani Page 7

Temples are normally dedicated to one primary deity (pradhana devata) or many deities depending upon the place and preference of the people, with decorations specific to the deity being worshipped. Mythological scenes are juxtaposed with scenes of everyday life, important political events, and rare occasions, like royal coronations, conquests, and celebrations, or with portraits of royal and secular patrons. As our body needs physical workout like flexibility and strength, we must have a spiritual workout which can be done at you Hindu Temple. All in one, unlike other organized religions, in Hinduism, it is not mandatory for a person to visit a temple. Since all Hindu home usually have a small shrine or puja room for daily prayers, Hindus generally go to temples only on auspicious occasions or during religious festivals. Hindu temples also do not play a crucial role in marriages and funerals, but it is often the meeting place for religious discourses as well as bhajans and kirtans (devotional songs and chants). ****************** Mantra Chanting at Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration 24 August 2014 Treasurer s Report (Jan to Sep 2014) - Satish Kumar, Treasurer Month Income Expense Major Celebrations Jan 18,562.59 15,645.43 New Year Ganesha Puja Feb 19,826.41 13,341.20 Mar 14,673.37 19,628.49 Maha Shivaratri Apr 17,517.08 16,119.64 Sri Rama Navami May 7,189.08 14,956.74 June 16,396.09 12,215.97 July 15,658.75 18,957.86 Aug 22,653.12 13,076.46 Krishna Janmastami Sep 22,837.08 20,601.02 Ganesh Chaturthi Total $ 155,313.57 $ 144,542.81 Volume 18 No.3 1 December 2014 Mandir Vani Page 8
