ALIGNED Thinking, Loving and Living More Like Jesus John 15:1-5, 8; Galatians 5:22-23 (on page 1081-82; 1171 in the Bible located in the seat back pocket) Message Notes To Transform our world through Jesus by connecting, developing, and mobilizing people for God s Glory The vision God has given us as a church should lead to action. What is your part of the vision? Today as you leave, pick up a balloon in the Gathering Space. Inflate the balloon (but DON T tie it!) and write a few words on the balloon with a sharpie to answer one of the following questions: In what way am I passionate about serving because of how God has wired me? What has God equipped me especially to do in the world around me? How do I want to bring justice, or peace, or healing to our community? Write your first name, too. Let the ink dry on the balloon, then carefully deflate the balloon and leave it in the basket provided. We have a special use for the balloons on Sept. 20. If you want to think more about the questions before answering, take a balloon with you, complete this next step at home, and bring it back by Sept 20. @timsjohnsonkbj @newcovlincoln 1
Next Steps John 15:1-5, 8 I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing 8 This is to my Father s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. Underline every reference to connecting (abiding) and developing (bearing fruit) in the above passage. It is God s desire and design that we would keep developing (fruit producing) which means that we think, love and live more like Jesus. God desires to mold you into the person He wants you to be. This can only happen as you and I give God s desire and design full scope in our lives full scope staying meaningfully connected and let Jesus do the development. One of the best descriptors of Christ-like characteristics (fruit) is in the following: Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self- control. There is a day coming when you could look like the above! Whenever you find yourself wanting the impact/outgrowth/result of connecting with Jesus while simultaneously being too busy to connect with Jesus, you have moved towards disconnection. Everything rises and falls on connecting with Jesus. Thinking, living and loving like Jesus rises and falls on connecting with Jesus. Connecting/Developing Opportunities Re-engage in consistent, lingering Bible reading (Read John 15 and Galatians). Pursue a Small Group this semester you need them and they need you (contact Pastor Brent at brent@newcovchurch.org to sign up). Make contact with a more mature follower of Jesus and have a connecting/developing conversation with them. 2
