Diocese of San Bernardino Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Office of the Bishop On December 2, 2015, we experienced another tragic act of public violence, this time in our own Diocese of San Bernardino. Please join me in praying for all of the victims of this horrific incident and their families. For those who lost their lives, we pray for their eternal rest and God s strength to their loved ones left behind. For those who are wounded, we pray for their health and healing. Let us also ask God to protect the brave men and women in law enforcement who are pursuing the suspects in this case. Our community of San Bernardino has faced great challenges throughout the years. Let us come together now in unity to bring light to the darkness of this day. In Christ, Most Reverend Gerald R. Barnes Bishop of the Diocese of San Bernardino En Cristo, Reverendísimo Gerald R. Barnes Obispo de la Diócesis de San Bernardino

These religious worked tirelessly in Catholic schools, hospitals and agencies, usually for little to no pay. As a result, many religious communities lack adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to today s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care and more. Please remember to be generous. Our Adoration Chapel Needs More Adorers The 24/7 Adoration Chapel at 13th and Lime of St. Francis de Sales is adding more adorers. We currently need additions to substitution lists, ongoing varying needs and MORE MEN on some early morning hours. Sleeping Bags for the Homeless St. Francis de Sales is looking for your help in providing NEW, adult-size sleeping bags for the homeless. These sleeping bags can be purchased at any sporting goods store, i.e., Big 5, Sports Authority, Target, Walmart, etc. Please bring these items to the parish office or you may bring them to the Mass you attend and leave them in the main entrance to the church. We will need at least twenty (20) sleeping bags before Winter. Thank you for your giving spirit toward those in need. STOP ASSISTED SUICIDE!!! Earlier this year Governor Brown called for a special session to address the state s Health Care Budget. The CA legislature passed and sent Governor Brown bill ABX2-15 Physician Assisted suicide, allowing doctors to prescribe overdose medication to terminally ill patients. This bill was previously rejected by the legislature because the people voiced their opposition to their representatives but was resurrected in this special session. Please join a coalition of physicians, nurses, disability-rights organizations and people of all faiths to stand for the lives of our elderly and dying and oppose assisted suicide! Over the next three weeks petitions will be available for signature after each Mass. Signer must be registered to vote in California and can only sign once. If you have previously signed a petition please do not sign again. Thank you. Toys Due Date - December 16th at 4:00 PM Las Posadas - December 16th

Third Sunday of Advent Page 6 December 13, 2015 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week, our celebration of Advent makes a transition in ritual and texts. Beginning December 18, the countdown of nine days (a novena) to Christmas sees a heightened sense of expectation and also a turning from the call of the Baptist in the wilderness to the events leading up to Jesus birth. In ancient Spain, December 18 was once celebrated as the Feast of the Expectancy, and customs grew up to heighten readiness in the homes. Some customs arise from monastic life and practice and spill over into our parish life. Beginning tonight, those who pray Vespers will sing in the opening phrase a beautiful title of Christ. These titles belong to a collection of opening phrases called the O Antiphons after the awe-inspired O sung on the first note. There s a playful code in the titles: O Wisdom, O Lord, O Flower of Jesse, O Key of David, O Dawn, O Ruler, O Emmanuel. When you take their Latin names - Sapientia, Adonai, Radix, and so on - the titles form an acrostic when you read them backwards: ERO CRAS. In Latin, that is translated as I will be there tomorrow! It s as if Christ were answering the prayers of the waiting people in the words of the prayers themselves. Rev.
