Hifzh and Tafsir
إن الذين كفروا. Indeed those who have disbelieved it is the same whether you warn them or not, they will not believe At the time the Prophet, SAW, had been giving dawah to a group of non-believers for a very long time. Allah, knew that they would not believe, despite all of Prophet s, SAW, calling. Allah ultimately exposes their fate in this verse It is not to say that all those who disbelieve will not believe: We know Musa was sent to Pharaon to invite him to the religion, Allah knew very well that he would not convert yet the Musa was commanded to go and hope that Pharaon turns 2
ختم الله على قلوبهم Allah has put a seal/ locked their hearts and ears and has put a veil on the eyes and in the hear after they have a great punishment This is the punishment that they experience in this dunya, that they are kept blind, deaf and closed hearted The reason they become eternally incapable of believing is because of this deafness, blindness and a heart that does not perceive و لهم عظاب عظيم And for them in the hereafter is a great torment We should observe from this that, because they refused to protect the very intelligence that makes us human (the ability to keep the heart above the crowd) and they became arrogant in so doing Allah shut off the intelligence We learnt in الفاتحة that the reason we are reading these stories, is not to develop a gang mentality against anyone who disbelieves but to study their errors to ensure we can remove any traces of it from ourselves For many of us at times we reduce religion to a daily ceremony. Neglecting to preserve our most valuable asset which is our natural intelligence (wisdom from god) which allows us to perceive god s existence. Through continuous neglect it could very well be that we experience blindness, deafness and absence of heart 3
و من الناس من يقول امنا And from the people there are those who say we believe in Allah and the final day but they are not one of the believers Here we are introduced to a new type of people, namely the منافقون ( the hypocrites) Allah spends more time elaborating the qualities of the hypocrites Here Allah introduces the main quality which identifies the hypocrites. That is that they say with their tongue that which does not exist in their hearts We know that the heart is the location of belief, and the function of the tongue is to witness what is in the heart 4
The heart and the tongue It is important to observe the quality of the hypocrites here It is possible that a person has a heart full of iman yet never says it with his tongue and dies a believer On the other hand the hypocrite speaks with his tongue that which does not exist in his heart. His heart is empty of iman, yet he claims to have belief and even partakes in the same actions as the muslims The hypocrites even fought with the muslims. But this was to gain the spoils of war. 5
يخادعون الله و الذين المنوا They cheat Allah and those who believe, and they do not cheat anyone except themselves and they do not feel it The hypocrites thought that by hiding there disbelief they were successfully cheating Allah and the believers - This means to partake in cheating. It means that Allah through the believers was also causing the يخادعون hypocrites to be cheated Allah had informed Muhammed, SAW, who the hypocrites were. Yet Muhammed, SAW, was ordered acknowledge them as believers In reality however they were only cheating themselves. و ما يشعرون What is it that these hypocrites do not feel? They know and feel that they are cheating Allah and his messenger They do not yet feel or comprehend the punishment that they will receive 6
في قلوبهم مرض فزادهم In there hearts is an sickness and Allah has increased their disease, and for them is a painful punishment because they used to lie The disease of hypocrisy is a disease born from the collective diseases of the heart. Love of dunya, jealousy, spite, rage etc. All of these diseases give birth to hypocrisy These hypocrites would mix and form relations with them whilst in their hearts they would have spite for the muslims only wanting the benefits of being Muslim فزادهم اهلل مرض The more time they spent with the Muslims, the more Allah was at the time increasing the Shariah..more acts to believe in, more commands to follow The hypocrites would continue to follow these things with a non believing heart and so it is through this that their hypocrisy increased 7
و لهم عذاب اليم بما كانوا يخذبون And for them is a painful punishment because they used to lie The punishment here is in reference to the punishment in the day of judgement The lie they committed here is to tell/pretend with the muslims that which was not in their hearts You will notice that the non-muslims have عذاب عظيم whilst the عذاب اليم hypocrites have a The painful punishment is worse. This is is the situation that the hypocrites place themselves in 8
What to observe Not many people will be deceiving the muslims like the hypocrites during the time of the Prophet, SAW But many of us will carry these qualities. Doing and saying that which we do not intend in our heart. Empty words and empty actions Some of us may already be treating the religion as such. Showing off in prayer, knowledge whilst trying to demonstrate a pure intention We should really think very carefully what we can learn about the hypocrites, and how at times we share their qualities 9
It is narrated on the authority of Amirul Mu'minin, Abu Hafs 'Umar bin al- Khattab (ra) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "Actions are (judged) by motives (niyyah), so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated."
Singular Intentions The hadith can often be abused, people will lazily do something, not full hearted and say reward is with Allah The point of this hadith is to identify that intentions can be singular for Allah and his messenger, or they can be to achieve some other worldly gain The context of the hijra is a perfect example, because all of these people are travelling in the same direction, many making similar sacrifices. Only few of these people however are doing the migration only for Allah. Hijra is also a continuation of the metaphor of this life. This life is a journey and we are.مسافر Sheikh Abdul Hakim Murad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeuzl9ow2do&t=909s 11
