Epistle Reading St. Paul s Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20 BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Gospel Reading The Gospel According to Mark 9:17-31 At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise. My Dear Beloved Family in Christ, 4 TH Week of our Holy Lenten Journey My prayer and wish is for our continued focus on Christ our God and a greater understanding of Him through our prayer, fasting and worship through the remaining time of our Holy Lenten Journey. I encourage everyone to participate and attend all our Holy Lenten services and continue with our fast in joy and to take time with family focusing on God. Let us continue to experience the power of God s grace and love through the hymns and prayers of our Holy Lenten Services and come together to purify our souls and uplift our minds and hearts. Our Lord continues to call to us with open arms to come to Him to experience the life that can reign supreme through Him. He shows His steadfast love for us so we can experience and taste the sweetness of the Kingdom now. The theme for the fourth week of Lent is Faithfulness and we as Orthodox Christians in our faith know the voice of our Lord and come to Him. Let us continue to show our faithfulness through our prayers, fasting, repentance and our expression of God s love to all and come to our Lord s Holy Resurrection with a paschal renewal. God s faithfulness is exhibited in His unconditional love for all of us. He loves us without conditions and as we are and He seeks to attract us by His love and guide us into His Kingdom. Can we say the same of our faithfulness to God? Is our faith an act of trust, confidence and reliance on God? Through the commitment of our faith we enter into a personal relationship with God and welcome His love. We hear and know the voice of our Lord. Let us come to Him and commit our lives into His hands and enter into His compassionate embrace. Operation Brown Bag Community Outreach Event We are asking that you please help donate to this most worthwhile endeavor that we have taken on. The need in the community is immense. We will be preparing 3,050 Brown Bag lunches for distribution. We ask that you please offer any assistance to this project, be it your time and talent in preparation, or a monetary donation. Please make plans to join us for our Spring Community Outreach Event on Saturday, April 29th at the Hellenic Cultural Center. We are looking forward to once again feeding those in need and fulfilling a critical need in our community. In addition to organizing, staffing and overseeing the event, the Parish Council will be providing a complimentary breakfast for volunteers. Following breakfast, volunteers will be making sandwiches and assembling brown bag lunches to be delivered to various downtown service providers for the homeless and hungry. This is a great service opportunity for parishioners and their families to come together and work side-by-side in an effort to help those who are less fortunate. In other words, one in four people in Lebanon is a Syrian refugee. This puts a huge strain on Lebanon's ability to provide food, shelter, clean water and education to those in need. Without any legal way to work in Lebanon, refugees struggle just to provide basic needs for their families. With your support, IOCC has provided health screenings for over 1,000 Syrian children living in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. Our staff works with primary health care providers to identify those who are at risk of malnutrition and to offer treatment, including a high-protein, high-calorie food diet to boost rapid weight gain and promote healthy development. Please consider making a donation today so we can live the word this Lent and continue to ensure the health and well-being of Syria's youngest refugees in Lebanon and children in need around the world.
