The story of Abraham began when God told him to go forth from his native land on an unknown journey, demanding faith in the unknown. As the story continues, God calls upon him to go forth on an unknown journey, requiring even greater faith. In Jewish tradition, this is the tenth and final trial that Abraham faces. Not only does God test him by asking that he sacrifice his son, but in doing so puts the promise to make of Abraham a great nation in jeopardy. Abraham would also be sacrificing his own hope for numerous descendants. As the story unfolds, it is one of total and complete trust in God. Paul is a master of rhetorical questions. As he asks a series of questions, we hear only Paul, and not how his audience might respond. When Paul asks, If God is for us, who can be against us? the Roman Christians could well ask, Then why are we being persecuted? Paul second question seems to answer: God who did not spare his own Son will give us everything along with Christ. Paul s next questions about charges, acquittal and condemnation have the sound of a courtroom. Clearly, the God who will give us everything else will not be a judge who will condemn us. As he answers the question, he states clearly that no matter the circumstances, the risen, exalted Christ will intercede for us. The account of the Transfiguration is a key passage in portraying the identity of Jesus. It begins by their going to the top of the mountain. Immediately invoking the multiple mountain images of Scripture as places of revelation. The appearance of Moses, the lawgiver, and Elijah, the prophet, clearly insert Jesus into the Jewish tradition. Then, Peter s insistence on three tents is reminiscent of the tabernacles during the OT harvest festival. The mountain of revelation, the figures of Moses and Elijah and the hoped-for tents all identify Jesus in continuity with the Jewish tradition. When the voice from the heavens proclaims him as the beloved Son, we heard an

From the Pastor s Desk continued echo of another Jewish story, that of Abraham and Isaac, the beloved son who was about to be sacrificed. Note that there is only one command from the heavenly voice, Listen to him. With the multiple allusions to Jewish traditions, the presence of the bewildered disciples, and a foreshadowing of Jesus sacrifice, the Transfiguration account weaves together past, present and future and in every age, Jesus is God s beloved son. Celebrant of our Masses this weekend is Father Jason Mitchell. Fr. Mitchell is on the faculty at Gannon University and regularly helps at St. Peter s Cathedral. I m grateful for his willingness to be here this weekend. A major new study on Catholic women in the United States has been completed by CARA, a research center at Georgetown University which does research on the Catholic church. It noted that 24% of Catholic women in the US attend Mass once a week or more. Nearly the same share, 23%, attends Mass less than weekly but at least once a month Twenty-seven percent attend a few times a year and 26% attend rarely or never. The study also revealed that 38% never go to confession and another 32% less than once a year. Only 3% go once a month. The annual Catholic Services Appeal is underway in the diocese. Each of you have received a letter from me outlining our parish goal. I m hoping that you might once again support this worthy project. Anything we raise above our $81,000 assessment remains in the parish. Last year we went $41,000 over our goal, and it would be wonderful to do that again. All I ask is that you consider doing what you are able to do. Some of you can t donate anything. That is perfectly fine. Others can make a significant gift. You determine what you can do; not me. You can make a one time payment or pay it monthly over the next 10 months. If you choose the latter, you will receive a statement from the diocese each month. In the Archdiocese of Quebec, the cardinal announced last week that the number of parishes is being reduced from 216 to 64 and in 2020, the number will be further reduced to 37 parishes. Quebec was once a citadel of Catholic practice, but the number of Catholics participating in the life of the church as well as the number of priests has fallen so dramatically that this small number of parishes will serve everyone who still participates. In the Archdiocese of Hartford, CT, the archbishop just announced that they are downsizing from 212 parishes to 127. In his letter, the archbishop noted that Mass attendance was 395,000 weekly in 1965 and today it is 123,500. The number of active priests declined from 535 in 1965 to 186 today. Father Mike DeMartinis is going to offer three Scripture classes during Lent. They will be held in church from 10 11 AM on March 1, 8 & 15. There is no charge for the classes, but we ask that you call the parish office so that we can have an idea of how many will be attending. In the past we ve had incredible attendance at these, and I think you ll find his presentations to be very enlightening. The work on the restoration of the pipe organ is progressing as planned. By now all of the pipes have been removed. The biggest difficulty was taking down the façade pipes as those are 18 feet long. They had to come down over the balcony, be wrapped and then shipped to Organ Supply where the work is taking place. They have almost completed the work on the console. You may recall that the original 1906 console was very ornate and detailed, but it was thrown out for some reason in the early 1970s. Since we have the blue print, they have rebuilt the original Victorian style console. A high lift will have to be brought in to lift it up to the balcony. We have kept the balcony closed during this work because there is so much debris, wood, etc. lying around that it simply isn t safe to have people up there. Once everything is completed, we re going to recarpet the balcony as well as replace all of the tiles in the back of church and the vestibule. A couple are getting ready for bed after a long day s work. I look in the mirror, and I see an old lady, the woman says to her husband. My face is all wrinkled, and I m sagging and bagging everywhere. And look at this flab on my arms. Her husband is silent Hey, she said, turning to him. Can t you say something positive to make me feel better about myself? she asked. Well, he replied, your eyesight is still great.
