Cumulative Evidence of the Virgin Birth. ---------------------------------- Topics. God will put enmity between the serpent and the woman. Adam knew eve his wife and she conceived. Abraham s only son. The Lord has created a new thing a woman shall compass a man. A stone cut out without hands. This is my beloved Son. Jesus, Moses and Elijah. Women are saved through child bearing. INTRODUCTION: the following passages are certainly not proof of the virgin birth within themselves, but gain their strength in their cumulative evidence. Taken separately they could hardly support such a mighty superstructure as the virgin birth and God s Fatherhood of Jesus, but together they become very powerful pieces of evidence of the truth Jesus is the Son of God and born by the creative power of God and the Holy Spirit through the Virgin Mary. God will put Enmity between the Serpent and the Woman. Genesis 3:14-15 ------ 14 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you (the serpent) and the woman, and between your (the serpents) seed and her seed he (the woman s seed) shall bruise your (the serpent's) head, and you (the serpent) shall bruise his (the woman s seed) heel Perhaps there is a faint hint of the virgin birth in these verses. God says, That He will put the enmity between the serpent and the woman and that He is the one that will produce the enmity. Is this a hint of God the Father creating the seed of the woman (the Lord Jesus Christ) that puts the enmity there? It is interesting to notice when Jesus spoke of the Pharisees and Sadducees (the corrupt religious leaders of his generation) he said: - You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (Matt. 3:7). You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? (Matt. 12:34). You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? (Matt. 23:33). Viper in these verses comes from the Greek word echidna, and means and adder or other poisonous snake (literal or figurative). The Scribes and Pharisees were the religious leaders of Israel, they should have been the builders of God s Kingdom, but instead they crucified their Messiah. In this way the seed of the serpent bruised the heel of the seed of the woman (Mary), but the seed of the woman crushed the seed of the serpents head. This is because Jesus death and resurrection abolished the need for the Levitical priesthood, the temple as well as the need to adhere to ceremonial rites holy days and keep Jewish religious customs and traditions to be made right with God and saved to eternal life. 2

NOTE: the ultimate crushing of the serpents head will be when the Lord returns as King of kings and Lord of lords to establish God s Kingdom of righteousness, justice, joy and peace on earth. Adam knew Eve his Wife and She Conceived. Genesis 4:1 -------------- 1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD." The Bible deliberately does not use this familiar Bible term in regards to Joseph and Mary, in fact it carefully and deliberately says the very opposite: - The birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit (Matt. 1:18). When the Bible speaks of a normal birth (i.e., between a man and a woman) the common language is, The man knew his wife and she conceived and bore a child, but when referring to the Lord Jesus Christ the Scripture says, Before Joseph knew his wife Mary, she conceived. This clearly shows that in the mind of the authors (inspired by the Spirit of God) the birth of Jesus was not a natural birth between a man and a woman. Abraham's Only Son. Genesis 22:2 ------------ 2 God said to Abraham, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you." The birth of Isaac's was a miraculous birth Sarah was barren and eighty-years old and her husband Abraham was one-hundred. Even though Abraham gave birth to Ishmael through Hagar and loved Ishmael and in spite of all this and the truth that Ishmael was Abraham's firstborn son God calls Isaac Abrahams, "Only son." Clearly this entire story of Abraham sacrificing his only son is an echo of God the Father sacrificing His only Son the Lord Jesus Christ. NOTE. There is no doubt (in my mind at least) that the story of God calling Abraham to sacrifice his only son Isaac brings a sense of horror and bewilderment to the natural mind that God would call a human father who is totally devoted by love to his only son to do such a horrific thing, but God s angel stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac. Obviously God in His eternal foreknowledge never intended to allow Abraham to actually go through with it, so what was the point of all the horrific emotional drama inflicted upon Abraham and His son? Perhaps, (this in not biblical, but only my thoughts) God though the emotional expected horror we feel in our hearts and minds toward this story is giving us a spiritual insight that we can all relate to of what it cost God the Father to sacrifice His own beloved Son, so that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. The author of Hebrews wrote: - By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son (Heb. 11:17). In the letter to the Hebrews we are told Abraham's "Only begotten son," was offered to death and received back in a figure from the grave. This surely shines a spotlight on the fact that the story of Abraham offering up his only son Isaac and 3

Isaac s totally obedience to lay his life down for his father was, preparing our minds for the greater miracle of the virgin birth of God's only begotten Son, for God's greater love in actually giving him for a sacrifice and for the mightier marvel of his resurrection. The LORD has Created a New thing a Woman shall Compass a Man. Jeremiah 31:21-22 -- 21 "Set up road markers for yourself; make yourself guideposts; consider well the highway, the road by which you went. Return, O virgin Israel, return to these your cities. 22 How long will you waver, O faithless daughter? For the LORD has created a new thing on the earth: a woman shall compass (cabab) a man." Compass: comes from the Hebrew word (cabab) and means to turn around transform and change direction. Israel is addressed as a virgin and then Jeremiah prophecies a new thing or event is to happen, something that has never happened prior to this event is prophesied, a woman is seen as turning men or backsliding Israel back to the LORD, perhaps within this new thing there is a hint of a virgin woman giving birth to a man that will turn backsliding Israel back to their God. A Stone Cut out Without Hands. Daniel 2:34-45 --------- 34 a stone was cut out by no human hand, and it struck the image (of Nebuchadnezzer) on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces ---- NOW GO TO VERSE FORTY-FOUR - --- 44 And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever, 45 just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure." The words, Cut out by no human hand implies that this supernatural stone involves God's intervention without human initiation. Now with this in mind consider the following words of Jesus: - Have you never read in the Scriptures: "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'? 43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. 44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him." 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them (Matt. 21:42-45). Here Jesus refers to a stone that the (the religious leaders of Israel (the builders, the chief priests and the Pharisees) rejected that has become the cornerstone of God s Kingdom and should this stone fall upon anyone it will crush them. Jesus in these verses is pictured as the stone grinding the worldly kingdoms of men to powder and replacing them with the Kingdom of God. Jesus is the stone that Daniel said would be: - Cut out by no human hand that would come and destroy the Kingdoms of men (i.e., the world s governments and its trading, banking, political and financial system etc., as we know them today). Though the words, Cut out by no human hand, embrace the spiritual Kingdom God is establishing now by faith in the hearts and minds of those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and to the Kingdom of God to be established on earth when 4

Christ returns as King of kings and Lord of Lords there can also be seen within the words, Cut without hands a faint echo of the virgin birth since Jesus came into the world not by a man, but by the miraculous power of God. This is My Beloved Son. At Jesus water baptism God said: - Matthew 3:17 ----------- 17 A voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." While Peter James and John were on a mountain: - A bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him"(matt. 17:5). In Peter s letter we read: - When Jesus received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (2 Peter 1:17). God never spoke this way to any other believer no matter how faithful they may have been. These words of God shine a spotlight on the truth that Jesus is the unique and the only truly begotten Son of God according to the true and literal meaning of the word. God being the Father of Christ through the Holy Spirit at his birth begot Jesus through Mary whereas believers in this present time are sons and daughters of God through Christ by faith. Believers are the adopted sons and daughters of God whereas Jesus is the only begotten Son of the Father. A believers spiritual relationship to God is not one of begotten (in the true and literal meaning of the word), but one of adoption. A believer s identification to God could be likened to a man who marries a woman that has had a baby to a previous man. The new husband can adopt and raise this baby as though it was his very own, he will care and love the child just as he would if the child was from his own seed. The man and the child may grow a deep affection and bond for each other, but that man can never call this child his only begotten son or his first begotten in the true sense of the word. This is the difference between those that believe in Christ and Christ Himself. God loves and cares for both the believer and for Jesus, but only Christ is born of God in a literal sense, while those that belong to Christ are spiritually born again by faith into the Kingdom of God. Jesus, Moses and Elijah. Jesus said: - John 3:16 ---------------- 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:18 ---------------- 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Moses, Elijah and Jesus were all loved by God and all did amazing supernatural miracles by God's enabling power, if the father of Jesus was Joseph (as some believe) then Jesus could not be spoken of as the only begotten Son of God since he would then be no different to Moses, Elijah or the many other sons of God throughout the Bible. 5

If Joseph was Jesus father Jesus would be a son of God in the same sense as all other sons of God are in Scripture which is by faith it is Jesus birth that makes him the only begotten Son of God and uniquely different to all others called God's sons. Women are Saved through Child Bearing. 1 Timothy 2:13-15 ---- 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. In (Genesis 3:15) the first ray of hope for fallen humanity was directed to the ultimate destruction of sin by the sin-bruised seed, not of the man, but of the woman there is an echo of this here in Paul's word to Timothy, "Yet she shall be saved through child bearing" perhaps a hint of the virgin birth since without the woman giving birth, the Messiah and Saviour could not have come into being. Women will be saved through childbearing does not apply to the birth of a child, since no woman can be saved to eternal life simply by giving birth to children. The idea of what Paul is saying not only goes far beyond giving birth to natural children but reaches back to Eve who gave birth to Abel who the seed line of Christ came from. The ongoing bloodline of Christ came through multitudes of women, with the ultimate woman the Virgin Mary giving birth to the Lord Jesus Christ the Saviour of the world. Thus the words: - Woman will be saved through childbearing. Are words of comfort, why? Because the reason women will be saved through childbearing is because it was a woman who gave birth to the Christ, without women bearing children none of us would be saved, thus in this sense not only women, but all of us are saved through woman giving birth. The words: - If they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. Simply means that if a woman does not remain committed, loyal, trustworthy, and devoted and faithful to Christ they will not be resurrected to eternal life. NOTE: this warning does not apply to women only, but to all of us because whoever deliberately and consciously choses to forsake their faith to turn to the ways of the world will lose their eternal inheritance regardless of whether they are male or female. ---------------------------------- End. 6
