Shannon has been a yoga practitioner since 2006. After she began yoga at The Weight Club in Blacksburg, Virginia she knew that she wanted more. And a lot more. She did her yoga training in the style of Ashtanga at Blue Ridge School of Yoga under the tutelage of Jeff Tiebout as well as her training in The Barkan Method with Becky Crigger in 2009. She worked at In Balance for four glorious years after its opening. Fellow Virginian and San Diego CPY teacher Jenn Richardson brought the CorePower love to Shannon's small Virginia studio, and after she left Shannon was on a search to seek out CPY and to find a way to become a part of it. She currently lives in San Jose and works for Corepower Yoga. She looks forward to sweating, laughing and learning on the mat. The Preetirang Sanctuary is a wonderful place where Shannon is blessed to be able to volunteer in CA. She would love to give back to all those furry friends during the holiday season. http://preetirangsanctuary.org/ Prepare for an energetic, 1.5 hour, CorePower Yoga influenced class led by San Jose CorePower Yoga Teacher, Shannon Cummings. Get ready for a class that will balance dynamism with deep tissue stretching. Get ready to flow with the music, sweat and reconnect with your post-holiday self while practicing karma yoga! Jivamukti Yoga Returns to Blacksburg with Lisa Asha Rapp, January 12, 2015, 6:00 8:00 pm, $35 One Night Only! Sign up in advance. As a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings, Jivamukti Yoga is grounded in the original meaning of the Sanskrit word asana as "seat, connection" - relationship to the Earth. Earth implies all of life. Citing Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, which states that asana should be sthira and sukham, Jivamukti Yoga maintains that one's relationship to others (asana) should be mutually beneficial and come from a consistent (sthira) place of joy and happiness (sukham). This is a radical idea that, when put into practice, can dismantle our present culture, which is based on the notion that the Earth and all other animals exist for our benefit and to be exploited for our own selfish purposes. So the practice of asana becomes more than mere physical exercise to keep one's body fit or to increase strength or flexibility; it becomes a way to improve one's relationship to all others and thus lead to enlightenment - the dissolution of the sense of separateness, the realization of the oneness of being, the discovery of lasting happiness. Lisa was born in Brooklyn, New York and as many practitioners began asana at a young age with Lilias Folan by watching Lilias! Yoga and You. Over 20 years later she found her first teacher Nancy LaNasa; this is where the seed of compassion and devotion were forever planted through the practice of Jivamukti Yoga. Nancy urged her to study yoga at the Satchidananda Ashram lovingly known as Yogaville. It was there that she was blessed to sit at the holy feet of Sri Swami Satchidananda who she reverently refers to as Sri Gurudev and upon completion of Integral Yoga TT came the birth of My Yoga Spirit; Norfolk s first spiritually based yoga center. Lisa was blessed to attend the 2005 Jivamukti Yoga TT where she sat at the holy feet of David Life and Sharon Gannon. This is where she met a teacher that spoke to her heart on the deepest level through the love of Sanskrit, dearly loved Manorama-ji who is reverently called Guru Ma as well as her mentor today and always beloved Lady Ruth Lauer-Manenti. Love for her teachers runs deep; she accredits them for everything she is today and devotes all to them. Every one of those teachers is in the room with her when she guides a class. In Lisa's class you will find emphasis on strength and breath to cultivate the spiritual warrior within as well as a hip hop vibe drawing from her old Brooklyn roots. Lisa has been married to Mike Rapp for over 20 years and has 3 beautiful children, Dominic (24), Andrew (20), and Angel (18). Mike and Lisa now live on the beautiful beaches of the North Shore of Hawaii where she hopes to build a new satsang and spread the teachings of Jivamukti Yoga. My dearest teacher Sharon-ji in the movie What is Yoga? said, The first thing that we do when we come into this life is we inhale, the last thing that we will do before leaving this life is to exhale. In between that first inhale and the last exhale is our life. This quote forever impacted me to make better choices and live for others. I hope I remain mindful of how to live... Page 5 of 7

Meet our Teacher Hannah Glasson Our second month of Meet our In Balance Yoga Teacher. We plan to highlight a different In Balance Yoga teacher in each month s newsletter. This month we asked Hannah Glasson a few questions for our IBY Teacher for December. Tell us about your first yoga experiences? I took my first yoga classes with Eileen Patzig of In Balance, though that was before In Balance had opened so Eileen was teaching at the Weight Club at the time. As a former competitive athlete, I originally thought of yoga as a really good fitness class that could help me to stay in shape. Yet Eileen s calming and wise teaching style led me to become interested in other aspects of the practice. And later, when I was facing the stress and pressure of a college workload, I discovered that yoga was incredibly helpful for staying mentally and emotionally balanced through the intensity. What is it that you hope to share to your students? What can students expect when they walk in the door to your class? I hope to share with my students a love of movement. Too often I have noticed in workout settings, and even in some yoga classes, that many people relate to exercise as something that is unpleasant or uncomfortable. I feel inspired by creating classes that use music and creative sequencing to make the experience of the class enjoyable, while challenging enough to feel empowering. We want to learn more about you. What would your perfect day look like? I love when I have enough time to both start and end my day with a nice long walk or jog, either in the woods or through the neighborhood. This is usually followed by some sort of yoga practice whatever my body is in the mood for. I m also very passionate about academic reading and writing, which I try to spend time on every day. Finally, even though I am still a beginner I love practicing and trying out new healthful and plant-based recipes in the kitchen. What is your favorite quote? The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams Eleanor Roosevelt What are 5 things you are most grateful for today? Today I am most grateful for the support of my family, for work that I feel passionately about, my dog, really great friendships, and the community of In Balance that always makes me feel at home. What inspires your teaching style? I have always felt inspired by teachers who have a strong message to share. Frequently people come to yoga because they have gone through some sort of hardship in their lives, or because they are committed to some sort of personal growth. Yoga gives us glimpses of incredible beauty and peace, but it also allows us to experience intensity, to face ourselves in different ways. And I think that this makes us braver, better able to share our truth with the world. Where is your favorite place in the world to practice yoga? I have to say that as much as I love having a personal practice, there is a lot of fun to be had in practicing yoga at studios. I love the community learning environment and the inspiration that I get from others. Back Bay Yoga in Boston is really incredible. I also have a special place in my heart for Kripalu, the mountainous retreat center where I completed my teacher training. How has practicing yoga transformed your own life? Practicing yoga has made me a stronger person, and has helped me to persevere through difficulty. It has Page 6 of 7

made me committed to learning more about myself every day. This has taught me to be more compassionate. I ve become more aware of the subtle impacts of my thoughts and actions, and I m able to make more mindful choices about how I relate to the world. What are your favorite artists to listen to while practicing? I love any sort of really hypnotic electronic trance music such as Tycho, and also really great vocalists such as Mazzy Star. What is your favorite aspect of teaching? My favorite aspect of teaching is definitely the students. The truth is that they inspire me all the time! And I learn so much from them every time I m in the studio. Other news: First Friday's Join us the first Friday of every month for our First Friday's - 20% off regular class packages.
