Appointment of Director of Brand Strategy and Marketing Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Your faithfulness endures to all generations. Psalm 119.89-90

Introduction The Bible is, by nature, a communication from God to humanity. In a complex and rapidly changing world, Bible Society is committed to helping people engage with God s story and discover and play their part in it. We want to see Christians grow in their Bible confidence, translating it to every part of life and society. We also seek to invite a wider audience to encounter the beauty, hope and wisdom the Bible offers and, ultimately, hear the inviting voice of God. We aim to change the conversation about the Bible in British culture. As we seek to further achieve these aspirations, we need a gifted leader to help us transform Bible Society into an innovative and creative communications agency. This role, entitled Director of Brand Strategy and Marketing, will be a central catalyst in the realisation of our bold new strategy. This is a corporate leadership role in a highly exciting and dynamic change context. This leader will be a brilliant brand strategist, marketeer and communications professional with an understanding of the people and cultural dynamics at play when moving through stages of organisational change. With a turnover of 19.5m, 130 staff, and over 15,000 volunteers, our services include publishing, social media, advocacy, campaigns, large education programmes, a think tank, conferences and events, digital platforms, distribution and a trading arm. We operate within a global family of 147 national Bible Society members (and our role as a founder of this movement is an important one for us to steward). Our desire has been to equip individuals, communities, church denominations and organisations to engage effectively with the Scriptures and apply them to the whole of life. We want to make the wisdom of the Bible an attractive influence in the world. As we move into 2018, there is a growing aspiration at Bible Society to re-imagine our role in the coming decade. We believe the rapid changes in the way the world accesses and uses information demand radical new approaches from us. The culture sought at Bible Society is one of faith-filled optimism about our purpose that would express itself internally as creativity and entrepreneurial freedom. This warrants the appointment of this newly designed leadership role. We seek a leader who is highly agile and forward-thinking, able to steer change both through IQ and EQ, able to oversee risk-taking (both enhancing success and curating a context for low-cost failures), and able to influence a culture to be collegiate, ambitious and accountable. Bible Society has an excellent leadership team, a strong Board and a longstanding history of the Lord s faithfulness. It is a time of great promise and opportunity but this will need to be delivered with the gifted and wise help of a strategic, creative leader. Please do consider whether you might invest your passions and gifts to help us realise our desire to see the world blessed through engagement with the Bible. 2

About Bible Society Thomas Charles, William Wilberforce and others established The British and Foreign Bible Society, now known simply as Bible Society, in 1804. Our patron is HM the Queen, and our President is His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos OBE, the first Bishop of the new Coptic Orthodox Diocese of London of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Britain and Ireland. Bible Society was established and remains a lay-led organisation. We work in fellowship with and serve the whole Church irrespective of denominational or theological tradition. When we publish the Bible we do so without doctrinal note or comment. Our approach is one of inviting conversation. Operating under a Royal Charter, our charitable object is simply to encourage the wider circulation or use of the Bible. We completed a review of our governance structure during 2015 with the benefit of professional advice. We are keen to do more to support both the saints in the street and the emerging generations, whether or not connected to church, to engage with and appreciate the value of the Bible, both for them individually and for society. This is because we believe that when people engage with the Bible, lives can be changed for good. In recent years, the majority of our national advocacy work has been through the media, education, the arts (especially film) and politics. For example, the think tank Theos is part of Bible Society s family and has an effective and distinctive voice in the public arena. Open the Book, which through a network of more than 15,000 volunteers delivers Bible stories to over 2,800 primary schools, is also a key Bible Society programme. We are active in Westminster, providing support to the cross-party group Christians in Parliament and helping deliver the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast. We have a state-of-the-art visitor centre in North Wales which tells the story of Mary Jones, Thomas Charles and the transformative impact of the Bible and Bible Society in Wales and the world. We run a competition called The Pitch that inspires innovative short films based on individual stories or texts from the Bible. Internationally, Bible Society is a founder of the global Bible Society movement, now known as the United Bible Societies fellowship and referred to as UBS. Bible Society remains a significant servant of that fellowship. The UBS fellowship is one of the world s leading Christian organisations, with national offices and operations in over 200 countries. This ensures both global interconnection and local ownership. It is second only to the United Nations in its global reach. Bible Society s international strategy has a particular focus on China, the Middle East and Africa whilst also operating elsewhere. We are affiliated to Amity Printing Company, the largest Bible printing factory in the world based in Nanjing (157 million Bibles in over 100 languages over the last 30 years, half of which have been distributed within China). We have recently commissioned Amity to print the first high-quality study Bible in China. We are working closely with colleagues in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan to meet the growing needs there at this difficult time. We are supporting numerous projects to translate the Bible into local languages. We recently concluded successful African leadership conferences in Malawi, Kenya and Cameroon, and we are delivering increasing numbers of Bibles for highly successful work that is reducing recidivism rates in a number of African prisons. These are just examples of our multi-faceted international work. 3

Context Global trends show that the world is becoming a less, not more, secular place. Christianity is growing all over the world, particularly in China and parts of sub-saharan Africa where the demand for Bibles and Bible-based materials is increasing at an exponential rate. At home, 7% of the national adult population are church-going Christians actively reading the Bible regularly, with a further 6% church-going but less engaged with the Bible. Approximately a further 55% of the adult population express an openness to spirituality but most would not describe themselves as religious. It is against this dynamic backdrop that Bible Society has a wealth of opportunities to respond to the growing demand for the Bible around the world and invite individuals to engage with what it has to say in their own lives. Our aim is to see every individual and community equipped to discover the value of the Bible for themselves. In a rapidly changing world, nationally and internationally, the types of need and opportunity are almost limitless. Cultural changes are happening with increasing speed, and globalisation is rapidly changing the way people connect. This calls for Bible Society to be increasingly responsive, creative and entrepreneurial. The Bible is communication, and digital media gives us extraordinary new opportunities to engage with everyone everywhere in locally relevant and accessible ways. In parts of Africa, for example, there is better access to smart phones than there is to clean drinking water. The task of translating, producing and distributing the Bible in every heart language in the world remains significant. The task of advocating for the Bible in every culture, and of helping people engage effectively with it, is even greater. We are filled with excitement about the possibilities, and a deep sense of hope about the value that the Bible can bring for all. We see a growing unity in the body of Christ around this value, and a growing need for the Bible s message of reconciliation and peace in an increasingly fractious and fragmented world. We believe that we have a unique opportunity to rise to this challenge. We are based in the home of the global English language whilst also having a rich history of valuing and supporting local cultures and churches. We have extraordinary global connections, and we have a long history of valuing the contribution of diverse spiritual approaches within the body of Christ. Bible Society is a thriving organisation with committed and talented staff. The organisation came 28th in the Sunday Times list of 100 best not-for-profit organisations to work for in February 2018. We have a strong and dynamic Board of Trustees that is ambitious for creative and purpose-driven growth. Our Chief Executive, Paul Williams, began in post in September 2016, following a career as an economist and then a faculty member and Director of the Marketplace Institute at Regent College, Vancouver. We believe there is a significant opportunity for Bible Society to increase its influence as it continues to improve the focus, delivery and communication of its strategy. Bible Society is committed to the spiritual foundations laid by our founders over 200 years ago and the task of interpreting how best to make the Bible available, accessible and credible in the dynamic context of our times. 4

Role Description We seek a Director of Brand Strategy and Marketing who will be a key organisational leader critical to our achievement of transformational change. This leader will help Bible Society read and respond to our times, becoming a creative, influencing and entrepreneurial agent. Bible Society is evolving to be demand-led rather than supply-led, and to increasingly create the market for our services, stirring up a hunger for the word of God across society. The role reports to the CEO and manages the following teams: Marketing and Brand, Communications, Press, Film, and the emerging creative studio. This role will work closely with all Directors, including the Director of Strategic Partnerships (incorporating fundraising, church relations, festivals and events). The primary expressions of this Director s role will be: Corporate Strategic Leadership Prayerfully help the Leadership Team and Board discern the will of the Lord for Bible Society. Work collaboratively with the Leadership Team and the Board to develop and implement Bible Society s exciting strategy. Develop and implement a brand and marketing strategy and ensure all communications are aligned with corporate ethos and goals. Influence cultural dynamics and help see planning, systems and processes through an entrepreneurial rather than a compliance lens. Help us to be an increasingly outside-in, demand-led, listening and learning organisation where the needs of our mission and supporters shape our structures and processes. 5

Creative Leadership Build a creative culture that plays with new ideas, experiments, permits low-cost failure and celebrates success. Contribute to the development of tools to monitor and measure our influence. Support the development of new mission audiences (including supporters), especially millennials. Establish Bible Society as a brand leader in the Third Sector and communications industry. Liaise with partners to foster co-creation and shape Bible Society based on the needs and strengths of others. Ensure that the Leadership Team are kept abreast of relevant trends in Brand, Marketing, Communications and all things digital nationally and globally. Though this role is leading and building a creative team, the Director will also be expected to personally innovate, leading by example. People Leadership Provide leadership and inspire a growing team, embedding the values of Bible Society in the culture and working practices of the team. Ensure that the team is encouraged and equipped to be innovative and creative in all that they do. Play a leading role in helping further foster a thriving culture of cross-organisational working and collaboration. Business Leadership Govern the commercial aspects of running Brand, Marketing and Communications teams well and growing our new creative studio. Redesign the department, recruit new talent and use agencies where appropriate. Report to senior leadership and the Board on the development of business plans to maximise Bible Society s impact and influence. Agile budget management, thinking in terms of investment and releasing innovation rather than compliance. 6

Personal Attributes for a Leadership Role at Bible Society Bible Society believes that character and behaviour are as important as competence, and that it is important for the Director of Brand Strategy and Marketing to have, develop and model a number of personal attributes. Therefore we seek a Director who: Is a wholehearted follower of Jesus, loves and has a strong knowledge of the Bible and seeks to serve the breadth of the Christian Church nationally and globally. Inspires through vision and values, creating and holding to a long-term strategic vision. Is emotionally intelligent, self-aware and authentic. Is a team player, an active listener and seeks to honour others ahead of themselves. Is entrepreneurial and creative. Is actively seeking to understand what God might be saying in the developments of our times. Is committed to and has a passion for the key audiences that Bible Society serves, nationally and internationally. Is experienced at blending trust in God with human endeavour. Is open to the different perspectives of others and maintains an open mind. Is collaborative, enjoying co-creating vision and strategy. Is prayerful in all they do and will commit to praying for the work and workers of Bible Society. Qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience Experience of being a creative organisational leader with significant exposure to, if not responsibility for: brand, marketing and communications. The person in this role is likely to have experience at a senior level in an FMCG or media company. A demonstrable and impressive track record of achieving significant impact by engaging effectively with diverse audiences. Evidence of strong interpersonal and influencing skills at senior management level with a demonstrable track record of good management and delegation skills. Track record of innovating. Familiarity with co-ordinating multi-channel communications campaigns. Experience anticipating the way people access and use information: early to spot trends in information technology and positioning your organisation to benefit by being ahead of such trends. 7

The package will be circa 74,000 dependent on qualifications and experience and will include pension contribution and other benefits. The role will be based at our head office at Trinity Business Centre, Swindon. However, consideration will be given to candidates who are based in London or elsewhere who are willing to spend at least three days per week in Swindon where the majority of the team is located. Applications should be sent by email to BibleSociety@macaulaysearch.com and must be received by Tuesday, 3 April 2018. Thank you for prayerfully considering this opportunity to serve many through seeing an effective Bible Society thriving in its mission. 8
