Seek Me And Live

Amos 5:1-12 Hear this word that I take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel Fallen, no more to rise, is the virgin Israel; forsaken on her land, with none to raise her up. For thus says the Lord GOD: The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went out a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel. For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel:

Seek me and live; but do not seek Bethel, and do not enter into Gilgal or cross over to Beersheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into exile, and Bethel shall come to nothing. Seek the LORD and live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel, O you who turn justice to wormwood and cast down righteousness to the earth!

He who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning and darkens the day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the earth, the LORD is his name; who makes destruction flash forth against the strong, so that destruction comes upon the fortress. They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks the truth.

Therefore because you trample on the poor and you exact taxes of grain from him, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. For I know how many are your transgressions and how great are your sins you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate.

Hear this word that I take up over you in lamentation,

Jeremiah 9:10 I will take up weeping and wailing for the mountains, and a lamentation for the pastures of the wilderness, because they are laid waste so that no one passes through, and the lowing of cattle is not heard; both the birds of the air and the beasts have fled and are gone.

Seek me and live; but do not seek Bethel, and do not enter into Gilgal or cross over to Beersheba;

Bethel- Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it. And he was afraid and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. Gen 28:16-17 Spiritual significance- The presence of God with his people.

Beersheba- At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, God is with you in all that you do Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God. Gen. 21:22,23 Spiritual significance- The companionship/fellowship of God with his people.

Gilgal- The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they encamped at Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. Joshua 4:19-20 Spiritual significance- The security of the land of Israel as the people of God s inheritance.

The Failure of Bethel- O house of Israel Fallen, no more to rise, is the virgin Israel The God who is changed Jacob s name to Israel at Bethel. But Israel is now no more!

Jeremiah 18:13 Therefore thus says the LORD: Ask among the nations, Who has heard the like of this? The virgin Israel has done a very horrible thing. Jeremiah 31:4 Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers.

The personification of the nation as a young virgin in the prime of life, unconquered and unfulfilled in her role as wife or mother, indicates the waste of her life. Gary V. Smith

The Failure of Beersheba- forsaken on her land, with none to raise her up. The fellowship and companionship of God has been revoked. Israel lies forsaken.

The Failure of Gilgal- For thus says the Lord GOD: The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went out a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel. Israel is now uprooted from their land and the security of possessing the promise land is now gone forever!

Now, dear friends, sermons, good books, and even the Bible itself are only like the porch through which we pass to get to God himself. If a man stays in the porch, instead of passing through it to the great Host of the house, he misses the design and end of the porch, which is not intended to keep the man upon the threshold, but that he should pass through it, and find the God who dwells within. Charles Spurgeon

2 Chronicles 15:1-2 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded, and he went out to meet Asa and said to him, Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: The LORD is with you while you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.

Isaiah 55:6-7 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Isaiah 45:22 Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.

If thy sin be great, remember also that God's mercy is a bottomless, boundless ocean, which can swallow up, and cover for ever, the great mountain of thy guilt. Think, too, of the freeness of that mercy, which asks nothing at thy hand; no price, no bribe, to move the heart of God to take pity upon thee, for his heart burns with love of itself. It does not need you to bring anything to make him love you, or to incline him to be ready to forgive you. He is so already from the very force of his own character. God's mercy is free, and full, and rich, and abundant. Charles Spurgeon

We are saved from God by God. The glory of the gospel is that the One from whom we need to be saved is the very One who saves us. R.C. Sproul

Usually, the last stand of respectability in a declining nation is found in her judiciary. With the degeneration of Israel's legal machinery, the fate of the nation seemed certain. Rolland Emerson Wolfe

Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time, for it is an evil time. Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

Acts 26:19-20 Therefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.

Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord: In all the squares there shall be wailing, and in all the streets they shall say, Alas! Alas! They shall call the farmers to mourning and to wailing those who are skilled in lamentation, and in all vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through your midst, says the LORD.
