PARISH NEWS From the Medical Desk HEALTH AWARENESS by Dr Raji Mathew ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION Organ and tissue donation and transplantation are getting more popular in recent times and it is heartening that more and more people are coming forward for organ donation. Organ transplantation is one of the greatest advances in modern medicine and is often lifesaving, giving a new lease of life to the recipient. It allows people long and productive life, if they adhere to a healthy lifestyle with diet, exercise and necessary medications. Transplantation is often the only treatment option for many organ failures resulting from advanced kidney, liver and heart diseases. Although end-stage kidney disease can be managed with treatment modalities like dialysis, transplantation is generally accepted as the best treatment option, both for quality of life and cost effectiveness. Transplantation is the process of surgically removing a healthy organ from one person (donor) and transplanting it into another person (recipient) whose organ is diseased, failed or injured. The usual organs which are transplanted are liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, lung and intestine. Double organ transplants such as kidney & pancreas or heart & lung are also carried out sparingly. The tissues commonly used for transplantation are cornea, skin, bone marrow and heart valves. Organ donors are of two categories depending on the source of the organ: A. Deceased Donor The organs for transplant can be taken from someone who has just died (deceased donor) or an individual who is brain dead. Most of the organs for transplant come from deceased donors. Anyway, they should have signed the required legal consent or told their family of their wishes to become a donor or the family should be willing for organ donation after the unexpected death of a close family member. The procurement of organs or tissues for transplantation from a deceased donor follows all the necessary legal requirements and is performed by trained medical professionals with care and precision like any other surgical procedure. B. Living Donors Organs for transplant can also be taken from living donors, who may be a friend, relative or spouse. It can even be taken from someone who wishes to donate to a person needing transplant or as part of their social commitment. Unfortunately, the demand for donors is much greater than the number of people who are actually willing to donate organs. This is due to the ever growing number of people in need of a transplant. Due to the limited availability of organs from deceased donors, living donors are encouraged to cater to this increased demand, despite the fact that it involves risks to them that may not be negligible. The community including the transplant center has significant responsibilities towards living donors and there should be provision for their long-term follow up. The rate of complications and risks to the donor can be minimized through rigorous donor selection procedures, careful surgical removal of organs and close post-operative monitoring to ensure prevention and optimal management of complications. The welfare of the living donors is largely neglected in cases where the poor and vulnerable are exploited and encouraged to sell their organs and tissues. This as a regular coloumn for the benefit of our readers. This is a series of articles which will hopefully increase health awareness among our members and hopefully lead to a change in perspective and focus on better health practices. All suggestions are welcome. To be loved by God is the highest relationship, the highest achievement, and the highest position in life. - Henry T. Blackaby
